I would say to just get himself out of there - but unfortunately he's not a sensible creature, but seems to have some sense of duty, and honour.

What a loser.

I suppose he could try and use the ensuring fight as a distraction - and just take the other two and sneak out. Risky, but it could work.

He notices a convenient poster on the wall about a travelling freak show. He can't read the words but he figures it out from the picture.

He then tries to incorporate that into his story to explain away his tail...

much scope for more trouble and mix up!

And the next installment...Enjoy.
----------------------

Chapter Five: Why do I Put Up with This?

A half baked plan jumped into his head and he stood up. When Penny roused him he grinned sheepishly, he really should have seen that flying keg coming. Still he stood again, this time somewhat more cautiously. "Excuse me." Nobody listened so he upped the volume. "EXCUSE ME!" Instantly he had the undevided attention of every sharp edged, and most of the blunt, objects in the room.

He grinned nervously and prayed to the Sunhoof that they wouldn't kill him before he had a chance to speak. "I think I can clear this misunderstanding up pretty quickly." He flicked his tail out from under his cloak. "I am the Horse-Tailed man...most famed freak in all the land! I was on my way here with my Keeper," he jerked his thumb at Penny, "when we were ambushed by bandits. I don't know how long ago that was, we've been walking for ages, but I'm sure if you ask around you'll find I'm perfectly legitimate."

The villagers all looked amoungst one another, muttering into their beards and scratching their heads. Then, like a vengeful wind from hell, the door to the Inn burst open to reveal a lovely woman in midnight blue. Her silver rapier was pointed directly at 'Phil' as her copper eyes blazed.

"That's him! That's the bastard! Hang him!"

He could only hurl every curse he knew at the Nightmare as the villagers bundled him up in so many roaps that he looked like a sausage. The Nightmare rushed over to Penny and put on the 'oh my poor sister' act, also trying to rouse 'Gerry' from his forced slumber by the door. Still cursing 'Phil' couldn't help but notice the sardonic smile the Nightmare wore as he was hauled past her. "You'll burn for this." He whispered.

"I certainly hope so."
-------------------------

Fyervex had left Penny and Gault waiting by the road out of town on two fast horses, one more fast horse waiting for it's rider with them. Right now she crouched on a rooftop, stolen longbow in hand, waiting as Photasmos was led to the hangman's noose on horseback. Normally they would have had a scaffold but, for some odd reason, it had broken just before the prisoner was marched up to it. Witchcraft some had muttered and Fyervex had shaken her head. She was no witch, just a magical creature in possession of certain arcane abilities...like the ability to stratigically burn wood from a distance discreetly.

As the crimes were read off, witchcraft listed amoung them, Fyervex had the singular pleasure of watching the already albino unicorn/man get even paler. She actually hoped he'd faint and buy her some more time to sight see, which meant more time to pick pockets. But he held on to his awareness and upright position as the words were read out. Then, just as the guard in charge of the horse brought his arm back to slap the beast on the haunches, Fyervex unleashed her arrow with deadly accuracy most elves would have killed for.

The arrow neatly severed the rope just as the horse bolted forward, a few mental nudges guiding it in the right direction to where the companions waited. Racing across rooftops, Fyervex showed another interesting talent. Though she was in human form, her Nightmare speed didn't seem to have decreased any.

Launching herself from the last rooftop, she sprinted the last short distance to the waiting horse. Vaulting into the saddle she wheeled the beast around just as Photasmos, looking comical as he tried to stay on the horse's back despite facing backwards and having his hands tied, came thundering up. "Let's move!" With that command they charged off down the road.
-------------------------

It wasn't long before Penny noticed that the scenery had changed. Looking at her companions she was surprised to find that not only had the scenery changed, so had their cloathing, tack, and the very mounts they rode. Photasmos was even clothed, fully, besides just having that little half cape of his. Wait...he'd been wearing a full cloak before.

"Is it just me or are things getting really weird?" Penny shivered a little as Fyervex gave her a lopsided grin.

"We don't belong in this realm. This road we're on, it doesn't just move us from place to place...it moves us from time to time. I told you I've traveled through Ordinary before, I know where I'm going."

"Really? How?" Penny hadn't noticed Fyervex doing anything special so she wondered if this was a talent unique to the Nightmare. If so then, once again, the party was wholly dependant upon her and after this last little fiasco Penny wasn't too thrilled about that.

"Simple really, I'm paying attention to the signs. Like that one." She pointed and they all turned and stared at what looked like a perfectly ordinary signpost. As they rode closer, however, Penny noticed there was a great difference between this signpost and a normal one like the one just outside the village.

This one had strange things like 'London, May, 1943' and 'Valley Forge, December, 1775'. Slowly Fyervex turned them toward one that said, 'New York City, January, 2007'. Now Penny was really curious. "Where exactly is that?"

Fyervex shuddered. "Far too close to Futuristic than I'd care for. Very few horses at all, they're pretty much luxury beasts and oddities in that time period, although there's mounted Police where we're going and buggies through Central Park. Mostly it's cars, Rap Music, and people who want to 'put a cap in your ass'. Believe me, you want to stay away from the last one."

Penny whole-heartedly agreed. She didn't want anything anywhere near her postierior. She shifted in her seat a little, drawing a snort from the Nightmare. As the signpost vanished behind them Penny suddenly realized that, even though she now knew how to navigate in Ordinary, she didn't know the way back.

She also didn't know how to get back on this magical road once they got off. Sighing she resigned herself to the fact that the Nightmare was still the mistress of their ultimate destiny. "Oh shit..."
-----------------------

Gualt was still a little sore over the fact he'd been knocked senseless in a human bar fight. It not only hurt his head but his pride. Musing to himself about ways to reclaim his broken honor he didn't realize the changes that they, and everything with them, were undergoing, until his horse suddenly stopped moving. Looking down he found himself astride something that looked likely to have come from a Goblin Iron Works. "What in the nine hel..."

"It's a motorcycle although I'm surprised...I'd have thought you all would be on bicycles. This is your first time through the area." Staring at the odd machine, and his odder clothing, Gualt wondered for the thousandth time if this really was a good idea.

"So how do you make it move?"

The Nightmare explained in what for her was painstaking detail. "You take this, put it here, squeeze this, put this up, and off you go." Gualt looked at the others with wide eyes. They were all asking themselves the same question. Was it worth the risk? Or were they better off finding some other transportation?

What do they do?
------------------------------

Hope you liked.

Smile Smile Smile I think it's worth a risk... if it fails then just find other means of transport. Very Happy see both in one. Laughing

I have to agree with Shady here, I think it's worth the risk, besides whose to say that any other means of transport is better or less confusing then what they have.

Well I suppose I could write this next chappy...just because I like you. Or is it because I'm bored? Enjoy.
--------------------

Chapter Six: Because I Have To

Gault sighed. It wasn't like he had much of a choice considering. He crossed is fingers, prayed to the Gods, and tried to duplicate the Nightmare's movements. He, and the rest of the others, got the exact same sound any other novice gets when they forget to let the clutch out. A grinding of gears that had them all wincing in pain. Gault shot the Nightmare a glare but she returned it measure for measure. Penny raised her hand.

"Would you mind showing us again...a little slower this time?" The elf maid's voice could barely be heard since the Nightmare did an odd motion with her wrists that seemed to irritate her machine. It roared loudly although, Gault had to admit, that noise wasn't nearly as horrific as those that the rest of the group had produced.

Slowly, and with a long suffering groan, Feyrvex dismounted, shutting her machine down. Standing infront of them she cracked her knuckles. "Alright. Motorcycles for dumbunnies is now in session." She walked back over to her own. "This is proper riding posture. Observe." She put her leg over the thing just like a horse. The rest of the group followed suit.

"Now, this is the ignition. Turning it to the left will turn your bike on. Understand?" Gault hated being talked to like he was five but he wasn't about to complain right now. He nodded his head just like the others. "Good. This is your throttle. It will control how fast you go. Turn it forward and you'll go faster, turn it back and you'll slow down."

So that was what made the roaring noise. Made sense now, and made sense why her bike had sounded good while everyone else's hadn't. She pointed to a sliver handle on the throttle. "This is the brake. It will stop you really, really fast. I recommend lightly squeezing it while easing up on the throttle. Otherwise, if you press it quickly, you'd better hold on."

"Like jerking the reins on a horse." Gault felt like an idiot the moment he said it but it only made sense that way. The nightmare nodded.

"Indeed. Some humans call these things 'Iorn Horses' although there's not a whole lot in common. Back to the lesson." She pointed to a peddle. "This is the clutch. Use it to shift gears. You'll know when to shift gears eventually, can't really explain it well to you now. I wish you'd gotten automatics." Almost as soon as she said it there was a rattling sound and things changed...instantly.

"Uh, Feyrvex." The nightmare had slapped a hand across her face.

"Well that negates the lesson. I guess the Gods decided you didn't need road rash and broken bones." She looked upwards. "Why. Why couldn't you let just one of the idiots have a single internal injury?" She shook her head and settled on. "Nevermind everything I told you. The gods have magicked your bikes. Think go and you'll go. Think stop and you'll stop okay?"

Gault could have kissed the ground. The Gods had answered his prayers. Feeling the bike come to life under him as they sped away he felt a sudden sense of...freedom. "I could get used to this."
------------------------------

Feyrvex felt like she'd been denied a choice tidbit of a choice meal. No injuries? The Gods were being too soft on these idiots. Not one of them had even asked what the Gods had wanted them to do. Now they were getting gifts. The Nightmare calmed herself. It wasn't like they'd been given enchanted armor or wonder weapons. There was still hope they could do something incredibly stupid.

Following the flaming map that had been engraved on her brain by the Night Steed, Feyrvex drove up to a massive tower of glass and steel. "Frost hag tits! Do all humans have to move to these contraptions the moment they get a bit of money. I bet there's a security guard or something equally annoying sitting just inside those doors. At least there's no doorman...that really would have made my day."

Waiting as the other's parked their bikes Feyrvex stood tapping a foot. Finally, what seemed like an eternity later, they huddled up around her. "Okay gang, the guy we're looking for lives on the 64th floor, door B. When we get in there I want you too..."

"Lemme guess. Provide a distraction while you conveniantly sneak up there, steal the Stone, and get back in time to have the mob lynch us." Photasmos didn't seem very happy and the Nightmare could care less.

"Hey! I got you out of it didn't I? Since when have I led you into danger?"

"Since when have you not!" Feyrvex didn't know the elf maid had that kind of courage. Penny had managed an angery outburst without wetting her pants, amazing. Maybe there was hope afterall. The Nightmare tapped her fingers together.

"Well, be that as it may, I seriously doubt you want me providing a distraction. That is, unless, one of you has considerably more fire resistance than I gave you credit for." She looked at the three other faces, each filled with petulant malic toward her. "No? I didn't think so..."

"Not every distraction requires a fire. Maybe a little Charm or some Confusion at most an Illusion." Feyrvex looked at the drow.

"Happen to be able to cast any of those?" Gault bowed.

"I'm a master Charmer lady. I could Charm you if I put my mind to it." Feyrvex lifted an eyebrow as the white eyed drow, since when did drow have white eyes?, looked at her. He quickly reddened and turned away. "Well, maybe not you, but definetly a human."

Feyrvex looked at the others. "Fine. We'll do things the democratic way since we're in America. All in favor of my plan, raise your hands." She was the only one to raise a hand. "His?" She jerked a thumb at Gault. Three hands shot up.

"Three to one. You're out voted." The Nightmare grinned at the unicorn.

"Actually we're tied since my vote counts triple. How's this. I'll go in now and do what I need to get up there. You can wander in in a few minutes and try Mr. Manner's illusion. Deal?"
------------------------------------

Photasmos wasn't happy that they'd let the Nightmare go. It wasn't that he was worried she was on her own, it was the fact she'd gone in first. However, no fire had erupted, no Guards had been summoned...or whatever passed for Guards here. Now, after waiting what seemed like an unimaginably long time, the three of them marched in.

The lobby was a pleasing place, Photasmos noted, done in shades of blue and green. Their footsteps echoed on tile almost as much as his hooves would have. At the thought of hooves he made a quick check to ensure that his tail was still in place, he'd tied it to his leg after the last fiasco. It was still secure and his long coat was still concealing the odd lump in one leg of his pants. The ends were tucked into his boot to keep from trailing.

A dumpy little man sat behind a desk. He looked bored, with his box of powerdered doughnuts and stack of 'Fit and Flawless' magazines. For a moment Photasmos thought they'd be able to walk right past him...then he said in a bored voice. "Who are you here to see?"

Gault smiled. "Us? We're not here to see anyone...just you." The guard turned and looked at the drow oddly. Photasmos felt his plams get sweaty and rubbed them together. This was a human thing he wasn't liking in the least. As a unicorn his hooves never got sweaty. I'm doing this because I have to, he repeated inside his head. Because I have to...

"Me? Really? Whatever for?" That second bored question from the Guard elicited Penny's response into the game. She stepped forward and put on the mystical elf charm and the sexy elf voice.

"Why there's something awfully strange going on out there." She pointed to the doors, the tinted glass doing as good a job of keeping the Guard from seeing out as it had kept them from seeing in. "We're kinda worried and wondered if you'd take a look. You're an enforcement professional after all." That was a phrase they'd gleaned from the Nightmare before that charcoal nag had deserted them.

The guard craned his neck in vain, attempting to see out of the uber-polorized glass. "What exactly is going on?" Now Photasmos stepped forward with his unicorn honesty and aura of calm.

"It's a thing. A really weird thing is out there and I don't know if it's dangerous or not. An animal of some kind." Now the Guard looked at him.

"An animal you say? Well I've got to call animal control...but I can't just tell them a 'strange animal' is out there. I need to know what it is. Got any idea?" Once again Gault stepped forward.

"It's a..."

What is it?

There you go. Hope you liked.

Duigrabbiotomus.

A hybrid of a duck, iguana, rabbit and hippopotomus.

It is very large, fat, with short legs, and webbed feet. It has a scaly hide, with long rabbit ears, and a curved horn on its snout, and a thin, whippy lizard tail.

It is large enough to carry at least 3 people on its back, and although it is slow moving, it has a fierce temper. Best used either as a pack horse or a battering ram.

Origin? Who knows. Could be an accidental freak of nature, or another magical person from the land of Amazing trying to disguise himself as a normal creature from the land of Ordinary, very unsuccessfully.

A bit of a lame suggestion, but there you go, it's there if you want it!

And it's finally over! Enjoy!
---------------------------

Chapter Seven: The End

"It seems to be a rabid do sir, a very large rabid dog. But it's like no other dog I've ever seen. It's as big as a horse and terribly ferocious. It nearly took a chunk out of my friend here." Gault nudged Penny sharply in the ribs, hoping the elf would take the hint. Luckily for them all she took it and ran.

"It's got all sorts of foam sir and I swear it almost got me. I'd just hate for anything else to come that close...especially a little child." At the mention of child the security guard dove for the phone, fat fingers dialing buttons as fast as he could. While he babbled something about a child-eating monster, the three companions snuck past him quietly.

They ran until the reached the 'Elevator' the nightmare had mentioned. According to her it was some sort of magcial levitation box that would take them to the floor they wanted. "Alright," Photasmos said. "Where are we going?"

"64th Floor, door B." Gault replied, punching a button on the faceplate that matched the number. He hoped this strange convayence actually worked...or that the number at least matched what he was thinking of. For some time they stood there, going up and up while some pointlessly annoying music played. All three of them spent some constructive, but futile, moments looking for the musicians in order to strangle them with their own instruments.

However, at last, their door dinged open and they stepped out of the box and into an new hallway totally unlike the lobby they'd been in before. Scanning the doors they quickly found the one marked B. It wasn't hard, it was the only door with scortch marks on it that looked like it had been pounded in. They quickly entered the room to find the Nightmare nodding polietly to a slender young man in a loud Hawaiian print shirt.

"...and it really is very complicated to get all the characters right when they're not around anymore...Oh, hello. Come in and I'll get you something to drink." Photasmos, Penny, and Gault all stepped into the lavish appartment a bit perplexidly. They weren't quite sure this was the right place until the saw the deep green gem that was sitting in the Nightmare's lap. Just being in proximity to it made them feel at home, the magical eminations producing a euphoria in them.

Sitting down they all accepted cups of some frothy drink from him as he resettled himself. "As I was saying to Feyrvex here, I really am sorry I took the Founding Stone, I had no idea it would destroy Amazing. That's the last thing I want, in fact it would actually be the opposite. Now that I know how to get to your world I can continue to write my popular Action/fantasy series."

"Oh, so you'd rather Amazing didn't become something...less..."

"Exactly. Infact, I'd like to write a story about your adventures. From what Fyervex has said it wasn't that horrible a trip but I'm sure that we could exercise some...'literary liberty' and spice it up. What would you like to add, how would you like yourselves to be heroically portraied?"

This sparked stars in the eyes of the three companions who, igoring the Nightmare completely, began to rattle off bold tales of daring do they daring didn't do. It wasn't until Photasmos was putting his hoof down about mentioning the incident in the Inn that anyone noticed the Nightmare was gone...
------------------------

Feyrvex stood before the Night Steed, Founding Stone glowing on the ground between her sharp forehooves. "Well I've brought it back, just like you asked."

"And did you leave those other 'Champions' behind?"

The nightmare snorted. "Naturally, it wasn't that hard."

"Excellent. With them out of the way my counterparts will have lost a good deal of their thunder. Now is the perfect time to make our move on the whole of Amazing. Soon we shall control everything, not just the Burning Plains and the HulRange." The Nightmare gave a happy snort. "And you, my lovely, shall control them all. As the first, the Queen, you were always meant to be. That reminds me, I have something for you."

Reaching out he bestowed upon her something she thought forever lost to the Sunhoof. Her horn...after all these years. She shook her head, feeling it's familiar but unfamiliar weight. "Thank you my lord. I shall strive to ensure your plans come to frutation..."

The Night Steed whickered..."Indeed you shall. Now go my dear and bring about the End of Amazing."

As she left the presence of her Lord the Nightmare chuckled. The gods really had goofed when they picked those three losers. Maybe someday they'd learn the error of their ways...But that would be long after the End had claimed all they held dear...what a touching thought. It brought tears of flame to her blazing eyes.

As she vanished into the mists of sulphor fog a great tremble went up from the land around. The End had come...
-----------------------------

Well that's that for Eld Journey's. Maybe I'll put up a sequel someday but the Journey is at an end for now.
