Tips for New Players:

New players can find answers to many of their general storygaming questions by reading the FAQs.

Readers must register and login to vote in the polls or post comments. The players direct the action of a storygame, determining what the author writes and the path the storyline takes.

I recommend that every player begin with the Introduction and then move to Chapter 1. Much information and the overall structure of the game comes from reading each chapter in its entirety.

The discussions of each chapter are all within one thread. Please go there to leave all comments, suggestions, ideas and questions on all chapters by clicking Reply in the discussions thread.

I hope you enjoy playing along on this storygame, and the many other wonderful games here in the City of IF. Very Happy

The chapters for this story are spread through three different threads. To make it easier, there is a link at the bottom of each chapter taking you to the next one, so you can follow them in the right order.

If there isn't a link, then the next chapter follows straight on in the same thread. Just scroll down and carry on reading.

For those of you wanting a faster catch up - there is a brief outline of each chapter below...

** WARNING - Big Fat Spoilers below **

THE TIME BEFORE : Chapter Summary

  • Chapter 1: Meet Trengin, a recently reclusive mage, living deep in woodland. The arrival of an old friend (Roah) along with a tale of war and death threaten to force him back into the world of Terrelee again.

    -~-

  • Chapter 2: Meet Norral, an ambitious Sempa (mage who uses his powers to hurt and kill) busy following orders as he kills the citizens of the next Town on the Sempa's domination plans. The task is completed with a rarely used DoomCloud event that levels the town completely. When offered a promotion and his own squad to command by the Elders, the readers choose for him to attempt the most difficult mission.

    -~-

  • Chapter 3: Trengin turns Roah away, but his conscience plays on him, and he packs up his house to go see for himself what he's been told is happening. He makes it to the nearest large town uneventfully, but has a run in with a over-zealous guard at the gates, and before he can make it to an Inn to try and overhear some gossip gets lost and robbed in an alley.

    -~-

  • Chapter 4: Norral gets research and documents to help formulate a plan of attack against a Magically-defended Bridge held by a strong Captain and his men...

    -~-

  • Chapter 5: Trengin gets directions to an inn to stay at where he manages a few hours rest before heading into the main room for a drink and listen. He learns much that confirms what Roah had been saying. He then hears of the first Sempa rout, led by a Captain Hunt holed up at an old magically protected bridge.

Trying to get out of the city leads to meeting Srune. Srune is the other part of the 'Circle' that Roah wants Trengin to join. Srune and Roah intend to go and protect the caravan from a possible Sempa attack and want Trengin's help...

    -~-

  • Chapter 6: Norral has formed a plan. Under cover of a magically created sandstorm Norral's squad move quickly towards the bridge. With an injury to Kewor they manage to get through the shield boundary and begin the devastation of the soldiers inside. Karak steps up to display his water magics and quickly kills all the soldiers remaining on the bridge. As he finishes triumphantly Norral feels something strange and reacts but not fast enough. A single arrow pierces their shield and kills Karak. The bridge is defended by a mage!

    -~-

  • Chapter 7: Trengin decides to help Srune and Roah. They set off straight away, and make to the edge of the Great Forest. Fearing Sempa spies Trengin utilises a spell that allows him to travel outside of his body for some distance to scout around. Somehow it back fires, causing him to black out.

Before any plans could be established to help improve the defences for the night the call of ATTACK is raised. A fireball flares into the sky and Trengin looks to respond...

    -~-

  • Chapter 8: Norral quickly bullies his shocked team back into action after Karak's death. Norral then pushes his team forward, anger from everyone causing more and more violent and merciless killings of the soldiers that keep on coming. The mage in the keep sends a couple more unconventional attacks that almost cause more deaths. Fuming with anger Norral orders a Doom Cloud event to destroy the Keep. Localised to such a small area the Keep is utterly destroyed, but Norral and his Squad only just escape the flying debris as they all but collapse just outside the shield boundary...

    -~-

  • Chapter 9: The attack is on. The attacking Sempa need to be located so Trengin tries to Seek them, despite the distractions. He quickly locates 6 unshielded Sempa. He uses an unknown rune learnt from his years of solitude to link with the essence of the trees, and exert some control over them. Within a few minutes 3 of the Sempa are destroyed, and the odds evened. Trengin returns to his body and reports the new situation to much surprise and awe from Srune, Roah and the Captain but they recover quickly and continue the defence. As the three mages moved closer the remaining Sempa emerge from the woodland edge and set about the soldiers, quickly incincerating the closer ones. A fierce battle ensued with magic from both sides, but with the death of one more Sempa the two remaining give in to fear and make a run for it, using a wall of flame to cover their retreat. As Roah and Srune move forward to counter the flames Trengin closes his eyes to watch their retreat. After only a brief glimpse of them a strange concussion makes all go black...

    -~-

  • Chapter 10: Norral insists on a thorough search of the ruins, despite his tiring team. They find evidence the mage escaped, just as he attacks from a distance. A brief fight leads to his capture. Norral is left with the decision what to do with him.

    -~-

    -~-

  • Chapter 13: The Captain allows Trengin, and his friends access to the caravan and they set about it with great enthusiasm. They are asked to go investigate Grenton Bridge.

    -~-
