I felt like I should have a go at writing one of these eventually - be warned - its a long time since I wrote anything

A Fronte Praecipitium a Tergo Lupi

The town of Kielbata was not a rich town, nor an important one. Situated in the middle of the South Sutain Desert one would have thought the most exciting thing to happen would be the coming of the merchant caravans once a year as they travelled south to Guadamara before returning north once more. For the most part, you would be right.

The villagers of Kielbata were not to know that their town was about to become the centre of one of the most important events in the history of Dartian, one that would change the face of the country – and if continued unchecked – the world.

Chapter One: The Beginning of the End

A figure walked through the empty streets of Alphbaks, capital city of Dartian. Cloaked in a long dark robe, hood obscuring her face, she appeared like a traditional human female, her lithe body walking confidently without a care in the world. That is – until you caught sight of the lion tail dangling through a slit in the cloak, twitching from side to side. The sword at her side was well used, with the burnished gold handle dimly reflecting the moonlight. On her back was a black bow, with a sheath of white feathered arrows at her waist.

She walked without a sound, her booted feet treading silently on the worn cobbles of the alleyway. Without warning she paused and cocked her head, her sharp ears catching the whispers of two men, following her quietly. A big brawny man carrying a large rusty axe and a thin weasel of a man brandishing a rapier. A smile came to her face, and she continued on her way, taking a left turn at the next opening. When the two men came round the corner there was no sight of her.

“We lost her. The pit bosses do not look kindly upon failure,” whined the thin one. “What are we going to do now Ordo?” The big man merely grunted. Turning to face him Enrik blinked with surprise, seeing an arrow jutting out of the big man’s stomach. That was the last thing he saw before a booted foot landed on his head, sending him into darkness.

The next day the two men were found. Or – that is to say – parts of them were. Their torsos were found hanging from an overhead alcove, missing their hands, feet and other extremities. It was clear to the local law enforcement that they had been skinned while still alive.

The woman reviewed what she had learnt that night. It was clear that someone wanted her dead, and had contacted Fangrimn – one of the many pit bosses of the city – to make sure it happened. She had a few options. If she stayed in the city these attacks would increase, until the law eventually posted men on every corner of the street. Or she could confront Fangrimn herself, discover who had paid to make her dead, and kill them. She knew that the pit boss would be easily persuaded. Her other option was to flee the city before it grew to heated for her, and live in a less populated area for a while.

the decision is yours

Short, but oh so sweet! Very Happy

Confront the source of the danger. Seek out the pit boss and... be persuasive. I'm sure he'll see reason (or at least what's left of him will) then you can move on from there.

Useless to flee unless she knows why someone wants her dead. Otherwise she might just be followed. I don't see her waiting about for someone to come to her either. She'll go to them, and the pit boss is the best place to start.
