Skaldin dropped nimbly from her perch on a tree limb over the target's house. She darted into the shadow of a tree. She didn't need to; it was midnight, but she was paranoid about discovery.
A light flickered on in the house. The candle was nearly dead, and was about five feet from the door. Skaldin could tell. She had been an assassin for her guild for nearly six years now.
Just as quickly, the candle flickered out. Skaldin held tight to the tree. Her target was coming out of the house.
As he walked along the cobblestone path to the dirt road, Skaldin muttered a few words over her favorite ring. Her target's head whipped around at the noise, but by that time she had already disappeared, invisible to the pathetic human's eye.
Skaldin quickly and silently dipped her dagger into one of her assorted vials of weapon poison. She then raced, albeit silently, toward the man.
"No need to be silent now," she thought, and let loose a demonic cry of rage as she stabbed the man in the back.
She ran away, her pointed elfin ears quivering in delight. She was now a thousand gold richer.
Later
"Well done on your last job, Skaldin," said her guildmaster Yalgar.
"Thank you, sir, but I itch to assist my guild once again," replied Skaldin.
"No, you don't, you itch for the money," commented Yalgar, the faintest of smiles crossing his lips.
"Always wise, Yalgar. But tell me, do you have a task for me?"
"As a matter of fact, Skaldin, I do. It just came in: a sorcerer has recently set up shop next to our guild."
"Oo! Let me guess, by day he sells scrolls and potions, yet by night he divines our goings-on and passes the information on to a rival guild!"
"Precisely, Skaldin."
"And how much am I looking at for doing this?"
"If you do it tonight, we can set you up with a lifetime of luxury."
"And tomorrow?"
"Ten gold pieces."
"You could always ask politely, you know."
"Yes, but this type of motivation makes people work harder."

I looked at it, realized it was too short, and put on a prelude to her next assignment.
And a poll.
So hopefully this works. The poll runs for 4 days, then I use the results from that to write up the next chapter.

Hey Sorrow,
Indeed a good start to the story.
It's really quite a forfeit to wait until tomorrow. Only 10 gold.
Clearly it's got to be worth the effort of trying tonight.
Happy Writing. _________________ The path of my life is strewn with cowpats from the Devil's own Satanic Herd!

Well it's probaly more dangerous to try tonight without a chance to observe the target and plan but the reward is certanily much better.
I vote try tonight

Nice Story here.
You've got some talent. But, be more desriptive so we can visualize what's going on.
If you need help, there's always me, Smee, D-Lotus, Saxon, ethereal_fauna, Shanty, or Hyperion and even Dobs.
Good first attempt.

An overwhelming response of "Tonight". But in case *checks poll* 4 people decide that tomorrow is a good idea, I'll hold off on writing the next chapter.
Hmm. . . there's an interesting myriad of possibilities . . .maybe she could . . . and then there's . . . what if she . . .?
Good stuff. No, you can't look in my brain! NO! NOOOO! Aaaaagh!!!

Well I enjoyed it. Sometimes a short chapter is nice to read, not like my long rambling affairs!
Being a greedy bstard, as people here will testify, I vote for the money! Though I would ask for some details of the target, and why it is so urgent and so forth. _________________ Neil Hartley Books.

Good chapter. Could have been more descriptive, but it's not like you left anything important out
I'd say 'tonight' or 'not at all'. 10GP really isn't worth the effort. *shrug*

My page weirded out for some reason. . . *twitch*
Here's the second part, chapter, whatever you want to call it.
Skaldin strode broadly down the small main street. The colors across her chest proudly signified her allegiance to her guild as well as her rank as assassin, and she was thus given a wide berth as she swaggered down the street.
When she reached the small shop where the sorcerer dwelt, she opened the door and said, loudly, "Hello! I am interested in a few odd trinkets, such as one of your--"
Her words died in her throat. In the center of the room, behind the table, sat--well, no one. She looked around and saw a similar lack of personage in the shop.
"Oculus dystiri skeldum," she whispered over her ring, and then walked silently over to the back door. As she opened it, she noticed an eerie green glow.
So what's the glow? I don't know. So you'll have to tell me.
I'll write as soon as I get three or four responses.

Skaldin walked silently into the room. She was already invisible; there wasn't any need to be worried, but she was anyways.
The sorcerer was drinking some strange green substance. For some reason it glowed, though Skaldin couldn't put her finger on why. He then capped the cauldron and put it into a cupboard.
Skaldin gasped as she noticed a small creature slide out of the liquid and cupboard before the door closed completely.
"Eh?" wheezed the sorcerer. "Whass'at?"
Skaldin didn't move an inch. She was petrified: she had been discovered. But not all was lost.
She circled behind the sorcerer, dagger at the ready.
The sorcerer spoke again, though this time his voice wasn't feeble and -- oh, Mystra be damned, he was reciting an incantation.
"Distery, spelkulus, payto!" boomed the sorcerer. A small squeak from his back made him stop, but the spell had already been cast. Skaldin felt her ease and stamina slip away as she stood petrified in fear. She was no longer hiding in shadows; her entire form glittered as did the rest of the room.
"There, there, Boo, it's not all bad. See? The assassin has been shown, and she is now at our implicit mercy. Let us see, then, if there is any forthcoming. . . " With a sigh, the sorcerer turned around and faced Skaldin.
"I assume, then, that you Gith have figured out *why* I am here, exactly?"
"I was told that you divined our goings-on and passed the information to a rival guild."
"And your informant is quite correct. However I do not do this task for money alone, as you will soon find. I have, in fact, secret and ulterior motives, like any good minion should. And I shall soon act upon them, like any good evil bastard should. Soon you shall know a great many things, not the least of which why I carry around a miniature giant space hamster and call him Boo. But for now . . . all you shall know . . . is sleep . . ." His voice slipped away, and Boo squeaked.
Those were the last things Skaldin heard before she slipped into the darkness.

All right, so I lied. However, I was banking on everyone visiting my thread today when I told them the new chapter would be up yesterday. And I did not even use the only response I got.
Hey LOTN, how do you feel about Rathier getting fried? I thought he would go a bit further, myself. Well, anyways. . .I bet small talk about the arena of death would be considered spamming, so I'll be quiet now.

Good chapter - although it does seem to slip between styles a little bit. The beginning seemed very serious, and the last few paragraphs seemed more humourous.
Both are good, only I wasn't certain whether I was meant to be grinning as I read it, or not. (I decided to go with the grin in the end )
Is that the end of the chapter, or is there a decision point coming? I don't suppose it matters really - I'll just wait for the next part like a good little stoat

There is a decision point coming soon . . .
Check out my Detriment story . . . there will be some things that happen to both Derri the ranger and Skaldin the assassin. Like now, for instance.
Skaldin woke up, which was a surprise in itself. She looked around and noticed that she was in a dark, concrete room. Strange, she thought. The sorcerer's shop was made of wood.
"Yes, Skaldin. My shop is indeed made of wood. So follow the logical connection in that tiny brain of yours."
Skaldin duly followed. Obviously, she thought, she wasn't in the sorcerer's shop anymore. Then a more surprising thought took her.
"Yes, Skaldin, I am reading your thoughts. I picked that skill up from Boo--he's very proficient at it."
Skaldin shook the confusion from her head and decided to get a better look around. Her neck craned and then her eyes widened.
"Yes, Skaldin. There is an illithid behind me."
Skaldin attempted to speak, but no words came out.
"I silenced you so I could practice this technique on you for a little while longer. But the spell should be wearing off soon. After that, I am going to give you a choice. And you had better pick the right one."
Boo squeaked maliciously. Skaldin blinked. It was as if Boo could understand the sorcerer's words. But the animal was just a hamster.
"NO, HE IS NOT!" screamed the sorcerer. "HE IS A MINIATURE GIANT SPACE HAMSTER, BY TALOS I SWEAR!"
Skaldin blinked again. Then she felt her throat start to weaken and her larnyx regain control. She then said, "Well, sorcerer, what shall my choice be?"
"Ah, excellent, the spell has worn off. Now, you have one of two decisions, so choose wisely."
"And what are they?" asked Skaldin.
"First, you can attempt to attack me, in which case this mind flayer that just came into the city will devour your brain. I charmed him before he charmed me, with Boo's help of course."
"Second?"
"Second, go back to your Gith friends and inform Yalgar that you have successfully assassinated me. I shall stop supplying my own guild with information and he shall suspect nothing. Within the week, return to your guild and assassinate him."

For enough gold to keep us happy for the rest of our lives? Besides the commercial said that the fight was going to happen didn't it?
Oh yeah and for our guild's honor, glory, respect and all that other good stuff.

Skaldin mulled over her choices a little bit. There wasn't much of an option. She knew that even if she agreed to assassinate Yalgar, she would probably be slain by her fellow Gith members. And if she attempted to slay the mind flayer, she would be trusted by her guild and by the entire town (as a hero, of course; who knows what damage this foul beast could bring?), the side effect being near certain death. Of course, her natural intuition as a thief would probably allow her to dodge any mind-control beam and nimbly avoid any foul tentacles the illithid waved at her brain. But even the best thieves get caught, including assassins. She looked around and noticed a few scrolls lying around the place. She had taken flexibility training as part of her survival course, and she knew how to read scrolls. She looked around at the titles of the scrolls, noting "Magic Missile", "Spell Deflection", and "Domination" around the place, along with "Flame Arrow" and "Aganazzar's Burning Scorcher". She always laughed when she thought about that last spell, as it seemed kind of redundant. In this situation, however, she knew that laughing wouldn't get her anywhere.
"Well, m'lady. What is it? Live. . . or die?" asked the sorcerer. Boo squeaked.
"You know," Skaldin said, as she started pacing around the room, silently nicking scrolls as she went, "I think . . ." her voice drained, and she began walking slower. Then she shouted. "I'LL LIVE!"
She shot off the Domination spell at the illithid, and simultaneously read the Spell Deflection scroll. Which was the good thing, because the sorcerer had just sent a Death spell rocketing at her head. The spell rebounded off her shield and flew into a bookcase, blowing up the entire wall. She then instructed the mind flayer to eat its own brain before the sorcerer could dominate it again. As the sorcerer howled, she slipped behind him and cast the Magic Missile spell while fishing into her secret pocket. The invisibility potion was there, as it should have been. She took a long draught and disappeared. The sorcerer began casting a True Sight spell, but before he finished, Skaldin slipped up behind him and stabbed him in the back, drawing her dagger down each of his vertebrae. The sorcerer moaned. It took an eternity for him to die. Boo squeaked, then clutched his heart and perished along with his owner.
She wasn't sure how rich she was now, but she figured she was well off for a little while. All she had to do was escape from the heavily guarded compound that she was in, revealed by the huge green hole in the wall.

*Tries to catch up*
Where did all those chapters come from!
Last time I checked we were still debating whether to go for that night or the next day.
Anyway, whilst I'm catching up... I'm not sure Chinaren's query was answered.
Boo is the name of the Hamster owned by one of the first characters you meet in Balders Gate II. Is that where you know it from? _________________ The path of my life is strewn with cowpats from the Devil's own Satanic Herd!

Yep, except in the game, Minsc is a ranger/beserker, whereas this is just some dumb sorcerer.
This story is actually based on Baldur's Gate II's world (spells and character classes, the environment, you know), but none of the storyline is. IM is sitting next to me playing that game <.<
It's been 10 days and I was trying to get my SG in the running for SGotM. But, maybe next month, and I have a hunch that it woun't be a fantasy this time. We've got a LOT of fantasies up n' running.

I thought it was.
I knew there was one recent new author that had a storygame set in the Balders Gate world, but (with apologies ) I couldn't remember which new person that was.

Ahha! I knew I knew it from somewhere!
Anyway, good chapter! Nicely recovered! Now you know that those bloody readers (including me) will sometimes go off and pick an option you were totally not expecting, forcing you to change direction!
Actually, the times this has happened to me have often resulted in whole new ideas and twists to the story!
Next: I say she escapes... _________________ Neil Hartley Books.

I would start writing the chapter, but as shown by the last chapter, you guys will probably decide to say something like "let's stay in this dank, dark, stone-walled room and wait for some of the rival guild's backup to come and kill you", so I'll hold off on it.
