Welcome to the Nuthouse!?!
A Storygame Collective Experiment

Rain patters across the grimy window panes surrounding this small auditorium. The air smells like musty old socks. Your chairs are cold and uncomfortable, small rickety foldouts that you may be concerned might collapse beneath you.

Standing at a rustic wood podium that has some suspicious beastly scratches across its front face is a wiry old man with crazy white hair. There might be a blue tint in that scalp, but you can’t be sure it’s not the faded lighting from bulbs overhead, so ancient you’re surprised they light up at all.

You’ve just gotten off perhaps the longest and most filthy bus ride you can ever recall having taken, after the longest, most horrifying plane trip you could have possibly imagined. The whole way, you’ve not spoken a word. None of you have. For you’ve all been nowhere but locked inside your own thoughts.

For some of you those thoughts have been about where you were… and where you were headed. For others, your thoughts may have led to far off places. Regardless, nobody felt like socializing, least of all you.

Once you’ve gathered into your seats, many of you staring down at your plain socks and issued cloth-wear, the white-jacketed man at the podium clears his throat. He looks like a stick figure from some angles, narrow, knobby and frail. His voice is high pitched for a man; perhaps it’s just his age. As he speaks, the auditorium echoes each word, annoyingly distracting at best.

“Greetings. I am the warden of this asylum, Doctor Lazarus Zephyr. You may refer to me as Dr. Z for short if you’d like.”

The crowd mutters to itself some and you are again struck by how widely varied the group really is. There’s men, women and children of all ages and sizes here. You must be wondering what THEY did to deserve this.

“You’re all going to be calling this place your home for a long time to come. The more you obey myself and my staff, the faster you will find your freedom once again. Some of you… never will.”

Eyes shift about from person to person among the assembly.

“You all come from very diverse backgrounds and you’ve all been brought here for your own, very personal reasons. But the one thing you all share in common with each other, is that you have all been found to have a skewed perspective of reality. There is a schism between the world that most perceive, and the world YOU perceive.

My job is to define that schism and to repair it, if it is in need of repair, or to understand it, if it is found to be representative of a more accurate model of perception.”

All seemed to ponder these words in the dramatic pause that the Doctor granted them.

“Throughout this process, you shall be held to a strict schedule. You will be guided through every step of your life, from one activity to the next, waking, eating, sleeping. You will also be required to reveal yourself through discussion… and possibly more intrusive devices.”

Lightning crashed in the distance somewhere, eliciting a wry smirk from the Doctor’s thin lips.

“Your treatment begins immediately. This very moment, in fact. I’m sure you’re hungry, no?”

His words seemed tainted with, what was that… a German accent? The crowd murmured a stirred at the mention of food. No matter how horrible, sustenance had been long since delivered.

“Then let us be quick about this shall we? I need each of you to take turns revealing to me who you are and what brought you here. I assure you, the gas you’ve been breathing since you entered this auditorium will give you not only unusually peaked lucidity, but a compulsion towards honest divulsion. So, let’s hear it.

Who are you?”

I'm not 100% that this is the kind of thing you're looking for TB, but I thought I'd give it a shot. I can always make changes later. ;-)

A young woman, of around 17 years old, raises her hand. Her hair is long and dyed a deep purple, of the same shade as the lipstick which adorns her perfect, full lips. She has been crying, long streaks of black, from the mascara and thick kohl that ring her strikingly blue eyes, have been smudged down her white face. Trembling, she rises from her seat, and stands amongst the crowd, her slight figure seemingly frail, as if a mere gust of wind could blow her away. Then, in a distinctly well-spoken english accent, cracked and broken from the many tears that she has shed, she begins to speak...

"My name is Celene, and I am... I am..."

'Who am I? What am I? What do I do? Why am I here?' I think frantically.

"You're an assasin, remember..." hisses the little voice inside my head, "We kill people, and gain a reward for doing so. We preform a public service, keeping such slime off the streets. They deserved to die!"

"But I have no money, no possessions... So what is my reward?"

"The knowledge that justice has been done. What greater reward is there?"

A flash-back enters my mind... children, so many children, each no more than five years of age... lying in the playground, bleeding... dying... dead... some sprawled lifelessly across benches... others dangling from the jungle gym... the gun in my hand...

"Children... I killed children. How can children deserve such a fate?"

"They were not children," the voice purrs. persuasively, "They were minions of the enemy, doomed to become the scum of the earth. How we hate them, oh how we hate them!"

"But who is the enemy?"

"... everyone..."

The girl, Celene, slumps back down into her seat, her two voices still chattering away frantically amongst themselves.

"Celene!"

I jump, as the voice of the man, Dr Z, releases me from the voice's clutches. I look to him questioningly.

"Why are you here?"

A moment of lucidity passes over me, and I burst into tears for the third time that day. Through the sobs, I manage to give him the true answer.

"I am Celene, and I am a murderer..."

"Excellent, Celene. You have taken the first steps towards your healing already," Dr. Z smiles devilishly as he wrings his hands together with some sort of unholy glee. A sparkle caught his eye as you admitted your nature, an unnerving sight at best.

"You may proceed to the cafeteria for your food now. Await there for the rest. Once all have joined you, I will be addressing you further." He waves you towards a rusty door behind him, from which seeps a sorrowful scent of sour bread, an odor that nevertheless causes your stomachs to growl.

"Who is next to feed?" Dr. Z asks the assembly expectantly.

Case History: “Little” Leroy Greer

Dr. Z’s words makes Leroy shift uncomfortably in his chair. This little shift is more than the poor chair can handle, and it cracks under Leroy’s considerable pressure. The resulting crash is more than startling, it is unnerving, like hearing someone being tortured in another room. Dozens of people stand up as though ready to run, before realizing it is just a very large man destroying another flimsy chair.

Leroy struggles to stand up and looks ridiculous as he rolls back and forth, trying to gain momentum. Most of the people think it is just sad, but there are others who consider it maniacally hilarious. A large black man, who could very well be a football player, is the only one to help Leroy, and even he has trouble.

Leroy finally finds himself on his feet, sweating profusely in spite of the cold, and looking at everyone looking at him.

“Who are you, my corpulent friend?” Dr. Z jeers, exposing a decayed black canine as he smiles. The sight puts everyone else back in their seats. Leroy looks sadly at his splintered chair and wishes he could sit back down himself. He turns defiantly and answers the question, though he can’t help the quiver in his voice.

“My name’s Leroy Greer. My dad is Jacob and my mom is Agatha. They used to call me ‘Little’ Leroy because I was a runt. Everyone still calls me Little Leroy cause they think it’s funny. Like Little John. You people probably think I can’t wait to eat, but you’re all wrong. I never eat anything. Never. Last time I ate was 6 months ago, but I’m still getting bigger….”

Leroy pauses for laughter, which is not as loud or as jovial as it usually is. In fact it is pathetic. However, that seems worse to Leroy, because as he sees it, if they don’t laugh, it’s because they pity him.

“I don’t care what any of you think,” he says.

“Don’t worry, Mr. Greer, we will help you with your delusions,” Dr. Z responds. “You may leave now. Don’t worry, no one will see you if you eat quickly.”

“I’m not going to eat,” Leroy states firmly.

“Mr. Greer. You can trust me, I’m a doctor. I would never feed you anything that would hurt you. You certainly will not gain any extra ‘padding’ from what I feed you.”

Leroy turns away and walks towards the orderlies guarding the door to the cafeteria. He looks back only to nod at the man who helped him up. Then he leaves, determined to do just as he said.

Dr. Z watches the rotund Leroy place one laborious foot after another as the giant makes his way towards the cafeteria.

As he turns back to the assembly, he wears a mirthfully amused grin.

"This is shaping up nicely... very nicely indeed." For a moment he seems lost in his wringing hands.

Abruptly, he readresses the assembly.

"Very well then... Who is next to reveal themselves?"

A well groomed lady stands up, looking like a million dollars despite her standard issue clothing.

"I am Wendy Suter, Director of Human Resources, at Zeddy Bank. I have seven degrees, six of them honorary. Nobody is more dedicated to their career than I. My children are cared for by a nanny while I work from 6.30am until 9 in the evening. And I know every executive on Wall St. Personally.

Will that do, Dr. Z?"

Dr. Z's thin lips split his face with a wry smile.

"Ooooo, perhaps the most vile criminal yet!" A couple of members in the assembly chuckle audibly.

He pauses to consider, eventually delivering, "Nevertheless, if you must ask, then the answer is... 'not nearly'. Tell us more Miz Suter. Aside from the obvious confusion you must suffer regarding your measuring stick of success, what have you done to earn your way into these walls?"

Wendy places her hands on the back of the chair in front of her, recently vacated by Leroy.

"The one degree I gained legitimately was in the history of art. Hardly a qualification of any use to elevate me to such a position of power in my field."

She laughs, and looks at her contemporaries, some of whom titter nervously in response. She locks her elbows fixes her gaze back on the Doctor. "And I thought a man of your learning would have understood the nature of my confession - or perhaps the word Personally is a tad too subtle for you? Perhaps you are in need of a private, personal demonstration for the sake of clarity, although I would doubt very much that continuing the scandalous activities that brought me here would form part of this therapy you offer."

A nervous giggle escapes Z's lips as he licks them.

"My dear, an exhibition is not in order. It is revelation I have requested. You will find there is nothing too personal that it is worth concealing, neither from me... nor your peers."

His face hardens.

"But please, do go on squirming in the spotlight. For what you do not say, and how you evidence your efforts to avoid it, is as revealing as that which you do."

Wendy lowers her head, but keeps a steady gaze. "Words of one syllable it is, if you must. I - slept - my - way - to - the - top. Okay? Except in reality the top never existed. I'm still a bank clerk, although they don't know that. How else could I afford the house and the nanny on my wage? Deceit and lying is what has brought me here."

"That elicits as many questions as it answers of course, but this exercise is less to understand your crimes and more to understand your nature. It is this that you have revealed so explicitly to me. Very well, girl, run and devour your food, low-brow as it may be for your tastes," Z rambles.

As you move to pass his podium, he pauses you with a gesture. "I AM impressed with how quickly you decided to act on my request. Look behind you," he motions towards the remaining assembly. "There are yet so many more who have evidenced a greater reluctance to speak than you." He waves you off.

"Now then," he returns his gaze to the assembly, the question remaining in his eyes alone as he scans the crowd.

Note: This segment is for those whom have introduced their characters previously. They may react to this segment as they please, though at any time, any may continue from the previous comments in the previous scene, introducing their characters into the mix at will. The previous examples were perfect.

Welcome to the Nuthouse
Part II

Upon entering this disappointingly diminutive cafeteria, which has seen better days judging by the eroded, stained brick walls, you are immediately surprised to note that there does not appear to be any discernable kitchen here.

Instead, along with three worn school-cafeteria fold-out tables, and an office-style water cooler with paper cone cups, this windowless room contains a box-shaped dispensary, which looks not unlike any common coin-op snack machine, except that there is no visibility regarding any of its contents, and no coin slot.

A simple graphic display on its face blips, "Select one". Underneath are buttons located next to engraved options:

1: Grain
2: Vegetable
3: Fruit
4: Dairy
5: Meat
6: Sweet

The machine whirs and creaks from within, possibly sparking some conversation among the baffled few whom have made their way past Dr. Z's odd orientation.

A normal, ordinary boy with brown hair and brown eyes raised his hand.

"I'll be next then."

Dr. Z rubbed his hands vigorously, and with a grin on his face so wide the boy twitched because of the awkwardness for a second.

"I'm here because they sent me here, I didn't want to go and I definitely showed them I don't."

Dr. Z just said "Go on."

"I... well, my parents saw that I wasn't doing well in college... I mean, it was medical college, it's awfully hard for anyone to be there!"

Dr. Z raised his left eyebrow.

"Anyway, they said they were either going to kick me out or I should find some work to cover their expenses of my education. So... when my dad went to throw me out of the house, since I had no interest in manual labor, I grabbed a shoespoon and spooned his eye out. Then I went to hit every single one of his extremital nerves, naming each and every one as I hit it, just to show that I really worked hard and it wasn't really my fault I flunked."

Dr. Z: "Ah, so then you..."

"I then took a knife from the kitchen and severed every single one of his major and minor arteries in such a way that it took him three and a half minutes to bleed out, all in as much pain as possible. Not to mention that the pain from the trigeminal nerve (the one that supplies the face, which you as a doctor yourself must know), is one of the most excrutiating pains ever to be sent by a nerve."

He took a deep breath, then held it for two seconds and did an equally deep exhale.

"I think I did a pretty good job, too."

He thought if he left something out...

"Oh yes, and my mother got a "slice and salt" treatment, I checked how much it was needed for a woman to pass out in pain. She passed out, alright, but she also died shortly after."

He coughed.

"Ah, but I am being rude, my name is Richard Chelsea, and how are you?"

*in the cafeteria*

Wendy stares at the machine and mutters. "Low brow, eh? You can say that again." She waits to see what Leroy and Celene make of it.

...Celene steps warily into the cafeteria, and looks around. The instant she's inside, she pales at the stifling sense of claustrophobia that sweeps over her. After a short time, it dies down, and she moves further into the room, taking in the crumbling brick work, and the carpetless stone floor. A series of clunks and whirrings comes from a dispensary to her left, and cautiously she approaches, and reads through the options. But she decides she's not hungry, and instead slips over to the far-left corner of the room, plops down onto the floor, pulls her knees up against her chest, and leans against the wall...

"I'm fine... I'm fine... I'm fine..."

"Are you?" the voice purrs inside my head.

"Yes... yes I am..." I try to say it firmly and descisively, but I know that the voice isn't fooled.

"Oh, I think we both know what a whopper of a lie that is Celene. You're not fine at all, and with damn good reason."

"What do you mean?" I know I shouldn't get into these conversations, I know better than anyone how badly they can end. But the voice has caught my curiosity. What does she know that I don't?

"Well, surely you know, Celene, you can't trust these people, no more than you can trust the ones out there, in the real world. They are all the enemy, Celene, every... single... one of them."

"No! They will help me. They will stop me from..."

"From what? Dealing out justice, where justice is deserved? Why do you think they want to stop you Celene? They can't have you out there, punishing them for their crimes, their sins, their dysfunctions in society. They want to lock you away, to hurt you before you can give them what they deserve..." The voice trailed off.

...The girl Celene begins to rock back and forth, back and forth, as her conversation continues, oblivious to the others entering the room after her...

"No... no... no..."

"Yes, yes, yes! I am right, and you know it. And you also know what you have to do, don't you..."

"I can't do that! I can't!" Tears pour down my cheeks, and I cover my face with my hands. My fingernails dig into the skin of my forehead, drawing blood, a result of my violently frayed nerves. "I can't... I can't..."

"Yes you can! Do it! Do it now!

"NOOO!" My scream draws the eyes of all the others in the room, and I feel them burning into me.

...Celene stops rocking back and forth, lies down on the cold, stone floor, and curls up into a ball, facing the wall... hiding her face from the others judgmental gazes...

Wendy looks from the nutcase lying on the floor to the sweating man beside her. Unsurprisingly, even despite the lack of food recently, there's no pang of hunger. But common sense tells her that she should attempt to eat something. She cannot see where the food will be dispensed. The machine is unlike any other vending machine she's seen.

Well it doesn't look like either of these two will try it out any time soon. She shrugs and takes a step towards it and looks at the selection.

"No option for nuts then," she says aloud. "I guess the good Doctor assumes there are enough of those here already."

Uninterested in Leroy's response, she jabs at a button. Fruit.

"Well," Dr. Z states after some rubbing at his narrow chin, "I'm glad we're NOT related. However, I'm always happy to meet a fellow med student. Go enjoy your food then, Richard." He waves at you dismissively, hardly concealing the crazed glint of pleasure in his eyes.

~

The machine whirrs and shakes and an unseen panel opens up in the front. A small alluminum shelf snaps out of a box chamber presenting a small shiny red cherry.

Leroy chuckles mildly at the cherry that Wendy holds by the very tip of the stem, like she was carrying a dead mouse. Her pursed lips and narrowed eyes make it clear it was the insult that makes her so fastidious. Whatever it was supposed to mean, it was demeaning.

Leroy walks over to the machine with a small grin.

"I'm guessing a carrot," Leroy says, as though playing a game. He presses the "2" button and waits.

"I thought you weren't going to eat anything," Wendy says, which wipes the grin from Leroy's face and makes him turn to face her.

"Just cause I order doesn't mean I'm going to eat," he says indignantly. "You can have it, whatever it is. I don't need it."

After much whirring and rattling, the machine produces a fat, healthy cuccumber.

...The girl, Celene, sits back up again, and looks down at her hands, which lie in her lap. Then she lifts them into the dim light of the room, and her eyes grow wide...

"Why am I so dirty? How did I like this?" I get up from the floor, and look down at my clothes. Smudges of dirt and grime decorate my normally excessively clean form, and all of a sudden I can't take it any more. I need to be clean... I need...

"...to be clean," I whisper, so softly it comes out as hardly more than a breath. I reach inside the pocket of my waistcoat, drawing out a silver compact, and I open it to examine my reflection. The shock at my appearance makes the urge to be cleansed, of all the dirt, all the more potent. My eyes find the water cooler, and I make my way over to it, snatching up one of the cups, and filling it to the brim with water. Then I return to sit in my corner, placing the cup of water beside me, before ripping off one of the sleeves of my white shirt, and then proceeding to rip the fabric into strips.

One by one, I dip the strips into the water, and, using my compact, I remove every last trace of the black, white and purple gunk from my face, until all that is left is the peaches and cream of my true skin. Then I use the remaining rags to clean my hands, paying special attention to my fingernails, which are bordered in grime. I pull out the scrunchie that restrains my hair, and it falls in lank, greasy clumps around my head. I tip the cup of water over my head, grimacing as the ice cold liquid makes contact with my skin, then I go back to the cooler for another, and another, and another. I am freezing cold, and soaked through, and still not clean. I have forgotten the others in the room, blanked them completely from my thoughts. I have forgotten the voice, I have forgotten why I am here. I am soley focused on the task at hand.

...The girl, Celene, stands trembling, whether from cold or anxiety. Pushing up her remaining sleeve, she scrubs frantically at her arms, tears streaming silently down her newly clean face, which is set in a determined frown. Suddenly she lets out a despairing moan, and then proceeds to remove her waistcoat, and then the shirt beneath, leaving her in just her skin-tight black jeans, and a loose-fitting, black, cropped tee, revealing her jutting hip-bones, and the multitude of thick, red scars, which adorn her stomach and lower-back...

"Feeling better?" The voice in my head sounded amused.

I shake my head, intent on my task.

"That's a pity," she continues, oblivious to my anxious state. "Considering you're making such a spectical of yourself, I was hoping it would have been worthwhile. And to let all of these strangers see those..." I stop, and look down at the scarring on my tummy, the long, angry slashes, that I always kept so well hidden... "What would your mother say?"

"Oh God!" I cried, forgetting the dirt once again, wrapping my shirt around myself to hide them.

"It was a pointless exercise though really, wasn't it darling," the voice whispers, uncaring. "Sooner or later, you will let me out, and when you do, we both know, these hands won't stay clean for long. Soon they'll be bold... bright... beautiful red!" She pauses, but when I don't react, she continues. "Now, why don't you just grab yourself something out of that contraption, and go and sit down quietly, and wait for the inevitable." Feeling ashamed, I do as she says.

...The girl, Celene, ceasing in her indecipherable whisperings, wanders over to the dispensary, lifts a still trembling hand, and presses the button labelled 'Sweet'...

A soft, velvet cupcake with a glittering scarlet icing is eventually produced by the reluctant machine.

Aside from the obvious conversation stimulants, do the 'inmates' eat? Richard enters the room just before Celene has made her decision, in time to witness her strange behavior.

~

Meanwhile, with beady eyes, Dr. Z continues to scan the crowd, looking for the next brave soul who would reveal his or her nature. A scowl crops up on his lips as his fingers anxiously tap the podium before him.

...The girl, Celene, picks up the cupcake, and returns to her corner...

"My favourite colour," chuckles the voice in my head, but I take no notice. I break off a piece of the cupcake, and place it warily in my mouth. Despite the colour, it tastes like any other cupcake, sweet and soft, with vanilla flavoured cream. Satisfied with my choice, I sit down to finish it.

...The girl, Celene, sits cross-legged on the floor in her corner, and proceeds to slowly eat her food...

Richard stops at the panel with the choices up...

"Hmmm... All that talk about spooning made me crave some sweets..."

He then presses the Sweet button.

As Richard is gradually delivered a bag of candy hearts, Celene begins to feel something she hasn't felt in some time... friendly? The feeling wells up within, as if spreading a warm glow throughout her bloodstream.

Richard observes the bag from all sides, tries to read the contents on the back of it, but there is nothing written. It's just a bag. He shrugs and tastes some, happy to finally have something sweet in his mouth.

Paul suddenly blinks, as if coming out of a deep daydream or trance. A slight frown creases his youthful brow, a shot of confusion seeps from watery blue eyes masked behind thick black glasses. He blinks again. The concern is gone. A strong, confident young man stands up, a knowing smirk on his face as he addresses the doctor.

"I am Captain Awesome... defender of Truth, Innocence and Justice! I have crossed the Salt Waters of Oc-ean, and traversed the endless Dirt Desert of Doom to be here! Stand aside foul demon, lest I am forced to slay thee with my mighty sword, Nightsbane!"

Another blink.

The watery eyes return, Paul doesn't appear to notice the doctor and others watching him. He fumbles in a jacket pocket, pulls out what he believes to be several 20 sided dice and bends to roll them upon his vacated seat, mumbling to himself as he does.

"Attacking role, 2D20, 35 yes good, plus 5 for demonslaying enchantment upon Nightsbane, yes. Defensive role, -3 for illumination against demons, 27, yes, yes."

In one sweeping action the die are replaced back in the jacket.

Another blink.

Captain Awesome assumes a heroic stance, left arm on his hip, right arm thrust out as if holding out a large weapon and pointing it at the doctor.

"I could strike you down Demon Zee, but grant you mercy. Stand aside and let me past lest I change my mind and smite thee where you stand!"

Leroy offers his cucumber to Wendy, but she merely folds her arms, raises an eyebrow and glares, as if to say 'What do you expect me to do with that?' Leroy is delighted that she's not interested. He sits down and starts picking at the skin of the cucumber with his nails. Soon it starts to resemble a face.

"Mr. Cucumberhead," he declares, then goes back to the slow work of making it look like a person. His stomach growls, but he doesn't pay attention to it. The less he thinks about it, the easier it is. He focuses on the work, which is going well, considering he has no tools. It isn't just eyes and a mouth, but a carefully sculpted face, even if the result is very crude. The face looks like it is in pain. Leroy looks grimly at it for a moment before setting it down. Leroy turns it away so it will stop looking at him.

Dr. Z's right eyebrow arches nearly off of his forehead. "Let me guess, you were great with the girls, weren't you."

He clears his throat after rifling through files before him, mouthing the word, 'Paul' as he inspects one of those documents. Looking up, he refers back to you, "You're not so far off in your assessment there, Captain. Nevertheless, you'll be needing sustenance if you'll be continuing to challenge evil today. You may pass."

~

As Captain 'Paul' Awesome makes his way into the cafeteria, Leroy has set to work on Mr. Cucumberhead and Richard, having begun to savor the, thankfully unprinted, candy hearts, has begun to feel an unusual sensation of everything being right with the world. A happy fuzzy glow seems to coat everything he sees and he finds himself downright happy to be amongst such close friends.

...The girl, Celene, is about a quarter of the way through her cupcake, when the warm glow begins to course through her, and has consumed another quarter, when she begins to wonder why...

"Friendly? Why? These people aren't my friends, I only just met them... I feel... strange." But the voice doesn't answer me. It almost feels like she has vacated my body, this evil, ruthless creature that invades me, and, despite all of her bad points, I find that I miss her being there. It's almost like she took a part of me with her, all of the fight and guts, and leaving behind the scared little girl within. This has happened before, with numerous medications, but she always comes back. And it shames me to say that, I'm always glad when she does. Without her, I feel like I can't cope with the world around me, like she controls all of my courage and strength. Which is why I never take my medication anymore, just try to control her as best I can. But...

"Medication... medication... I haven't taken any medication." I look up at the people around me, all of whom have turned to stare, upon hearing my vague statement. "She only leaves if I've taken my medication..." My voice trails off, as I look down at the cupcake in my lap, and the truth suddenly dawns upon me.

...The girl, Celene, makes a noise of disgust, and throws the remaining half of her cupcake against the far wall, where it smashes to bits, crumbs flying everywhere...

Richard felt good, even better than he did when he first came in the building. It really was good to feel. Feel good. Feel anything.

"I love myself." he said. "I really do"

And with that words he continued to eat the hearts.

Wendy holds the cherry up by its stalk, and twirls it back and forth between thumb and finger. The cherry rotates, the reflected light on its shiny surface never wavering. It is perfect in every way. Not one blemish to be seen. She places it on one of the tables and beckons to Celene, who seems settled now she's devoured the cupcake.

"Here, you have it," she says.

Wendy turns back to the machine and jabs at another button. Grain

...The girl, Celene, eyes the offered cherry warily, and shakes her head...

"No thankyou," I reply quietly. The others are free to do what they please, but I have decided that I will not be eating another bite of the food in this place. The voice has still not returned, and I miss her. I suddenly feel very sleepy...

...The girl, Celene, leans back against the wall, and closes her eyes. Within moments, she is asleep...

A little girl, no more than 6 or 7, stood up onto her chair. Her long, dark brown hair contrasted starkly with her pale skin. Gripping a single white rose to herself, she spoke, her voice betraying her nervousness.

"I'm Ally and I don't know why I'm here. Mommy said that daddy shouldn't have tried to show me his tail. He said it was put in the wrong place, and asked if I wanted to see it. I told mommy that and all she did was look at me funny.

"She had him taken away by some scary men in blue. I don't know why daddy hasn't come back yet and mommy won't tell me. I asked our new neighbor if he had a tail in the wrong place. He did. He showed it to me and asked if I liked it. I thought it was ugly, but I didn't want to hurt his feelings so I told him it was pretty. He told me that next time he would show me what he does with it. When I told mommy about it, she told me not to go there anymore. The men in blue came and took him away, too. I didn't like that I didn't get to know what he does with it.

"A man came up to me when I was playing in the park with my friends. He said he wanted to show me some magic and that I should go with him. I told him that if he was going to show me what he does with his tail, that he should probably show mommy first so that she would be okay with me seeing it. He smiled and told me that that was a good idea. I pointed my mommy to him, and told him that it would be hard for him to get her to let me see it. He just smiled." She paused, took a deep breath, then continued.

"The next time I saw him, he was standing over my mommy with blood all over him. Mommy didn't say anything or move. Then, he left the house. When I touched mommy, she was cold and stiff. I didn't know what to do, so I just sat there.

"I don't know how it happened, but the next thing I knew, the men in blue came and took me away. I didn't want to go because daddy never came back when they took him. They had to force me into the car. I didn't like the smell in it and I didn't like the place they took me to, either. While I was there, an older girl showed me how she would cut her wrists a little. I liked the look on her face when she did it, so one day I copied her. The lady looking after us yelled at me and sent me here."

She stared at Dr. Z, wondering what he would reply. She was a little afraid that she would end up with nowhere to go, but she had done what she was told, so everything should be okay. Right?

"Hmmmmmmm.....," Dr. Z ponders as he strokes his wedge chin, "That certainly IS quite a 'tail' there, little Ally. No doubt the majority of your injuries won't be so self apparent until you are bit older yet, so the prognosis here is... very good. Your innocence will be our... erm... you're greatest asset. You may run off and eat now. Perhaps someone can help you to reach the buttons."

Dr. Z returns his penetrating stare back to the crowd.

Wendy is hungry and begins to reconsider the cherry that Celene rejected. But the euphoric look on Richard's face after eating the sugar hearts and the contented slumber Celene has descended into strengthens her resolve to resist.

She sits at the table opposite Leroy. Mr. Cucumberhead sits on the table between them. Even the face carved into its green flesh looks like it doesn't have a care in the world.

Ally gulped before going through the door. She was a little afraid of the people who had gone in before, but she had nowhere else to go. Tentatively opening the door, she took in the sight of the room and its occupants. The windowless room strangely comforted her, knowing that she wouldn't have anywhere to escape to. She didn't mind the aged look of the room. What did disturb her was the seemingly peaceful atmosphere in the room. Her breathing grew shallow as she began anticipating something terrible.

Approaching the machine, she stared at the buttons that were just barely out of reach. She looked around at the crazy lady asleep in the corner, the frightening, rigid person watching the big guy doing something to his cucumber, and the most scary one of them all, R-something, eating some kind of candy, and decided not to ask for any help.

Stepping back, she quickly looked over the choices and decided that she was in the mood for meat. Having made her selection, she approached the machine again and tried to reach for the button, standing on her tip-toes. When that failed, she made a small leap for the button and narrowly missed pressing it. Exasperated, and now totally absorbed in her task, she made another lunge for the button. Her finger landing squarely where it needed to.

The machine delivers you two steaming hotdogs on a paper towel.

Meanwhile, Richard begins to feel a remorse and sorrow... after a moment of thought, he realizes that what has beset him is a feeling of... loss... Suddenly, as his bag has become finally depleted, he feels an undeniably terrible feeling of missing everyone he's ever loved in his life at any time. All anger or resentments for those past individuals dissolve into a forgotten mist, leaving him bare of his walls against this pain. A hollow feeling grips him from within with an excrutiating intensity.

Mr. Cucumberhead wobbles a little. Those of you whom have not eaten yet are beginning to feel a sense of painful hunger that exceeds your usual frame of reference.

As Leroy's belly continues to grumble he can feel the acid churning inside. It makes him scowl as he looks at his large gut.

"That's weird," he says disappointingly. He looks at Wendy who has just sat down across from him. "I haven't been this hungry for months.... Are you all right?"

"Fine," Wendy says primly. Only her eyes betray any instability, and there only a little. Soon after admiring her strength of composure, his perspective changes. As his hunger increases dramatically, he starts to take a more careful look at her body. He stares at her arm and imagines the lean meat of the muscles within. He salivates and once he recognizes it, he is alarmed.

In his mind, there is a door, and beyond that door he knows there is something he does not wish to see. As it seems like the door is about to open, he acts desperately. He seizes 'Mr. Cucumberhead' and jams it in his mouth. Leroy chokes as his eats, but he does not stop. The pained face is consumed and soon the entire cucumber is gone. Leroy beats his arms and his whole body against the table as his skin turns red. He cries out in anguish, with tears and sweat splattering on the table. He sobs for a moment with his head down, but soon he is up again, this time beating his round figure with his fists.

Finally, he is completely out of strength and he lays down on the table again and sobs some more. He has no idea what will happen next, but all he wants is to be left alone.

As the hunger grows beyond Wendy's tolerance levels, she looks to the cherry. How can a single cherry satisfy such desperation? she wonders. On the other hand, the two sausages still sitting in the vending tray of the machine look much more satisfying.

Swindling and lying to improve her lot is what got her here. It wouldn't take much to persuade the little girl to swap a sausage for the sweetness of a cherry.

Trying to blot the hunger from her mind she rests her chin on her hands and deliberates on which method of deceit she should use.

Gradually, the sensation spreads throughout Leroy's body, a lightness, envigorating, energizing. His lungs fill with air as it feels suddenly great to breath. While not 'exciting' per se, the sensation is also grounding and strengthening. He feels his blood pulse beneath his skin as his veins dilate. Suddenly, movement sounds appealing as a body that has largely been in a deep hibernation for years begins to awaken.

...The girl, Celene, slowly awakens from her slumber, and, looking slightly disorientated, glances around the room, noticing the two new residents. Suddenly a look of realisation, then panic flashes across her face, and she cries out, but then it passes, and a new calm, collected, and strangely confident expression replaces it...

"NO!" I cry, but I feel strangely detatched from my body. No detatched isn't the right word. It almost feels like I'm trapped, contained, chained to my minds walls, still able to think and speak, but completely incapable of performing any bodily actions. The other has taken over, the voice. But how? I was usually so capable when it came to keeping her at bay, the last time it had happened had been over three months ago when...

"Ah, you're awake at last," the voice murmers, sounding very pleased with herself. "I wondered when I would get the chance to get this show on the road."

"But... how?...How did you..." I stammer, and hear my questions met with a quiet chuckle.

"Good stuff, those meds, whatever they were. Got you all cosy and relaxed, made you let your guard down. And here I am. Said you'd let me our sooner or later didn't I, didn't say that you would mean to." Another chuckle. "Seen our newest resident?"

I look around, and spot the little girl, dark-haired and pale, standing near the dispensary, looking frightened and small, in a room full of adults. I suddenly realise that all of them know my name, but I don't know any of theirs.

"What do you think?" her voice comes again. "Should she be the first? Spawn of the enemy, demon child. But oh, doesn't she play her part well, all shy and innocent." She sniggers scornfully. "Look how she keeps glancing at the lad with the bag of sweets. Scared to death of him, isn't she. If only she knew that the real danger comes from right here." She turns my head towards one of the tables, where the fat guy, and the haughty-looking woman sit. "Or maybe that stuck up bitch should be first, looking down her nose at everybody. Plenty of time to decide though. Unlikely to be able to get them all with only my bare hands as weapons. We'll have to see what delights will cross our path later. As it is, I still feel a little too relaxed and 'cheery' to be bothered anyway. And remember, for now, I'm in charge, and you will keep quiet."

"No, Amber, please!" But she's not listening to me.

"I'm hungry," she says, "You really should have finished that cupcake. Although, from the way the others have reacted to theirs, maybe it was for the best."

...The girl, once Celene, now Amber, gets to her feet, and leans against the wall, a predatory look in her eyes as she watches the other residents...

Richard feels good, really good. And he enjoys it. He even likes everyone like they were his best friends. He waves to the little girl and the large man, and then to everyone else with a grin on his face. Very Happy

Why swap a sausage for a cherry when you can go for both? Wendy eats the cherry, picks the stone out of her mouth and drops it in a nearby waste bin.

hmm...

Quote:
Richard begins to feel a remorse and sorrow... after a moment of thought, he realizes that what has beset him is a feeling of...

As soon as she swallows the cherry, her heart starts racing. She suddenly feels hyperactive and excited! The world seems a brighter place, if not extremely confining at the moment.

Wendy can't remember feeling this way since childhood and may never have recalled the sensation if not for this reminder. It feels like the ultimate sugar high!

"I am confined by flesssssh..."

The man, if he could be called a man, had perched on the back of his chair, rather than sit in its seat. Now he leapt into the aisles, approaching the podium with soft hunger.

"They said I should not burn. They said I was like them. They are fools, and you are a fool too. Only the burning shall release me utterly, little doctor. Only the burning shall end my confinement..."

He paused, crouched in the aisle. His eyes wandered over the face of his prey, not caring, not wrathful, but examining. "Take the plank out of your own eye..."

And then, screaming, he jumped onto the doctor! He hands clutched at the shoulders! His mouth widened, his fangs gleamed! "YOU CANNOT FIX THAT WHICH IS NOTHING! YOU CANNOT FIX ME! ARROGANT FLESHLING! YOU WILL DIE BEFORE I SUBMIT TO YOUR INSANITY!"

Pressing his thumb and forefinger together, Dr. Z smiles into the face of his attacker as the assailant suddenly tenses up under a powerful electrical current passing through his body.

Dr. Z throws the man unceremoniously to the side as he stands back to his podium and begins rifling through files, "hmm..." he hums under his breath.

"I'm sorry... which one are you?" he unpassionately asks as the wild man, quivering in pain and weak, raises to his hands and knees.

The man grinned. "...Master of flesh, then. You will find that the soul is more then you can bear."

As doctor Z scanned the list, he cut back down into the warning section. Celene was there, as were a few others, three of which were labeled Does not respond to name. One account, detailing a subject's wish to be burned, labeled him Rupert Fernadi.

"Soon enough, little doctor, you and I will have... a discussion of your position here." The man rose, shaking his head in an attempt to clear his vision; the shock clearly had hurt him, but he was ignoring it with some effort.

"Rupert, I presume," Dr. Z intoned, "Hmmm?"

Striking out like a viper, Rupert finds himself impaled in the shoulder by a syrenge that seemingly appeared from nowhere in the Doctor's hands, emptying its clear liquid contents before the wild man could realize what was taking place.

Even before the syrenge was withdrawn, Rupert begins to feel a calm euphoria wash over him, somehow making it impossible for him to touch the burning rage within that more commonly consumed him throughout.

"I suppose we will be having said discussion soon, yes. I'm quite certain I DO have some things to learn from you... and about you. For now, however, you may proceed to the place of feeding."

As Rupert came to his feet, Dr. Z added, quite undramatically, "Oh, and Rupert... don't kill any of the others... yet. Mmm-kay?"

Rupert smiled. "You know I never kill, good doctor. Incidentally? I have no name."

Then he shuffled into the cafeteria, thoughts of dismemberment in his head. His violence might have been curbed, but he knew all that that meant was that he would be calmer for a bit; soon his flesh would burn and he would be free of it.

Hearing her food being deposited, Ally turns to the machine and stares at the hotdogs, glad she got two, because one would not have been enough. She wishes they had come with a bun, but she isn't about to complain, either. Reaching for the dogs in front of her, she sees her wrists and is reminded of what brought her here.

Out of the corner of her eye, she caught the movements of that office lady. Sure that something is going to happen, she takes a deep breath and holds it. She bites her bottom lip as the lady gulps down her cherry and throws away the stem. Knowing she won't have much time to move, she grabs her hotdogs and walks briskly to the nearest corner where she won't have anyone at her back to worry about. She braces herself for what's going to happen.

Then the door opens. Ally is feeling so frightened that she can't seem to move even a finger. Despite the hunger that rumbles in her stomach, she's paralyzed.

Leroy's elevated energy and the eagerness to do something slams face first into a panic of claustrophobia. He tries to stay calm and focus his new strength, but on what? He begins pacing at first, just anything to stay on his feet. Then he starts jogging laps around the cafeteria. His jogging is more of a very labored fast walk, but he feels better as long as he keeps moving. He ignores everyone's stares the best he can.

As the sugar rush courses through her, Wendy forgets about the hot dogs. Time to build a castle! She pulls chairs from under one of the tables and starts stacking them on top. When she can't reach any more, she pulls up another to stand on, bringing them up one by one, and piling them higher and higher.

As Ally's grip squeezes down on her hotdogs, one breaks open, revealing a hidden surprise, a tiny rolled scroll hidden inside the sausage peaks out of the torn meat.

Leroy, jogging by, can't help but take notice of the look of terror mixed with sudden curiosity that overcomes the girl.

Richard is so desperate now that he wants to kill somebody. He needs to release his desperation through the art of fleshcarving, through the gentle strokes of knives. Unfortunately, he can see nothing of use for the purpose, which brings him to his knees. He walks on all fours to the corner and tries to fight it like he had tried before.

The creature ignores the girl. She is too young, too innocent, her darkness not yet truly a part of her. His gaze wanders over to the first one who spoke...

The euphoria represses his violent urges. It's rather annoying, really. But on the other hand, it allows hi to see that the woman has changed. Something he probably would hove discovered anyway, when they were at each other's throats. He lopes over, examining the woman.

Crumbs on her lips. She's eaten something. It must have been drugged... What was the name? Celene? Ignoring her glare, he examines the eyes. "What has happened here, fleshling....? Or are you not flesh, but bound?"

...The girl, Amber, watches as the wild man approaches her, an open-mouthed grin frozen on his face, allowing a set of sharp fangs to protrude. She remains in her leaning stance, against the wall, and calmly listens as he delivers to her his strange question...

I look this new resident directly in the eyes as he speaks, feeling Celene's fear and horror press against our shared mind.

"It's alright,"I reassure her, "I can handle this." Then I push her right to the back of my mind, and turn back to face the newcomer. "I most certainly am of flesh, though I'd rather not be known as 'fleshling', if you don't mind," I answer him, in my clipped, english tones.

I see a moment of unsurety pass over his face, though it's gone seconds later. I continue, realising that perhaps I'm not quite what he expected me to be.

"Love the gnashers by the way, how much did they set you back? Two, three grand?" I eye his unkempt appearence with distaste. "Though looking at you now, one has trouble imagining you ever being in the possession of such an amount of money."

He doesn't answer, and I carry on, allowing my lips to spread into, what I know to be, an unnerving smile.

"As I said, I am purely of flesh and blood. I've merely suffered a splitting of the soul, a split so complete that it almost seems as if we are two seperate entities living in one body. Of course, our personality traits are split between us too, one half being good, vulnerable and in possession of all morals, and the other being constructed of hunger, desire and, quite simply, of hate towards all human kind."

I pause again, then nod my head towards the little girl, whose petrified eyes are still fixed upon the newcomer.

"Her name?"

"Ally," he replies, with a hiss.

"And the others?" He relates their names to me, one by one.

"And yours?" I'm met with stony silence.

I nod, turning away from him for a moment, and looking down, inspecting my long, black boots. Then I glace back up at him and speak to him in a whisper, so that the others cannot hear.

"Well, whatever your name is, I think you should know, I'm not easy prey. I'm more than a match for you, I assure you. These others..." I sweep my arm, gesturing to our fellow residents "... maybe, if you get to them first. Because, nameless wonder, Celene is gone. The good, and the vulnerable, and all the morals, that I mentioned before, are buried deep inside me. You are speaking to the other half, the one who commited those murders that Celene feels so guilty about."

I clear my throat, and begin to speak normally again.

"All I can say to you is watch your step, and, in turn, I'll watch mine. I can respect you enough to be aware that I need to do that." I quit leaning against the wall, and begin to walk away. "Oh, and I wouldn't recommend eating anything from that contraption, if you can resist the temptation..." I gesture lazily towards the dispensery. " I believe the food is drugged."

...The girl, Amber, takes up a new position near the door, hoping to hear the names of the new residents before they enter the cafeteria...

He listens to her little speech. His mind, addled by the drug, proffers names while he thinks.

"...How do you justify it to your other?"

Amber staunchly ignores him. He smiles.

"This Celene, you have not killed her yet. Repressed her? Yes, I can see that; you move like a hyena. But she's still there, isn't she?"

He chuckles darkly, perching next to her. She leans away. He notices.

"You tell her the victims are... tainted. Evil. That is why you dislike me, because I am openly evil."

A nerve struck. She freezes. She doesn't turn; he can't see her face.

"So you say you are a cleanser. How fitting... I should speak with a cleanser first in this excuse for a prison." He turns away, stands.

"...Why are you here?"

"They fear me. They fear my mad ravings might be right. They fear I might be who I say. The fear to burn this flesh and release me...."

He grins. "Or they may not understand." He walks off, perching near Ally, but not looking at her; his gaze follows Leroy instead.

With a soft sigh I stand, looking up at the good doctor. With a flick of my hand I bring my hair around from the back of the chair. Resting just below my knees it shows the wear and tear from the unpleasant trip. Crossing my arms, I introduce myself.

"My name is Setsu. Setsu Makaiya." My deep tenor resonates around the room. My eyes pass over the crowd, spotting a few possibles...

Taking a breath, I continue. "I am here because before the eyes of man I have committed several acts of 'evil' that can not be understood, nor ignored as it would seem." I adopt one of my lighter tones, trying to explain things to the good doctor. "You see, all I have done is try and bring mortals into my world."

Dr. Z raises an eyebrow in inquiry. With a small smile I continue. “You see, I am what you mortals call a creature of the night, a 'vampire' if you will. In recent years I've grown a bit lonely and desired a companion. I have found many young men whom have volunteered for the position but, alas, none of them have been able to withstand the turning.” I pause, shifting my weight from my left foot to my right.

“My taste runs towards younger blood, if you'll excuse the expression.” My eyes glide over to one of the possibles I'd marked out earlier. A young teen, 14, 15 maybe. He shift under my gaze. With a smile I turn back to the front. Brushing my elbow length bangs back, the pale white of my hand standing out it stark relief against the ebony locks, I decide to get to the point.

“I am here because I have deflowered and bled dry no less than 12 young boys in the past 10 years. There are many more than that whom fall into both categories, but we'll just stick with the 12 I was incarcerated for, shall we?” My gaze drifts over to the doorway the others had gone through.

“While I am no hurry to sample your prison fare, it has been some time scene my last meal” And while you're 'food' may sustain me, I am eager to begin looking for more suitable sustenance.” My gaze returns to the good doctor, awaiting permission to begin my hunt.

The Doctor looks Setsu up and down, smiling in fascination. After some time of pondering, he finally speaks, "It had been my understanding that very few, if any, of your kind exist anymore. Which of course, as you must realize, brings me to question the legitimacy of your claims."

Smiling like a wolf he continued, "If you'd like, I'd begun to tire of this crowd of resistants... select one for your hungers," and waves at the stragglers who remain in the auditorium, as of yet having remained unwilling to openly express their 'crimes'.

I have been watching the activities of the room. I have been making notes in my mind about these people; one by one. And I've been most interested in the doctor's reaction to each introduction.

It was the last fellow that finally lured the true guise of the doctor out. I finally figured out why he had been so intriguing to watch. The man actually not only allowed the vampire to continue beleiving he was as he claimed to be, but set him upon the rest of us.

Until now I have been leaning on the back of my seat. however, I couldn't help laughing quite loudly at this man, at the irony of him being here.

"I see a mad man trying to cure the mad."

I announced still looking at the doctor. I, for the most part, ignored the vampire. I felt safe enough where I was. He was after males, after all.

(i'm thinking of making it a two-post introduction reacting to the reaction. sorry)

Chuckleing at the girl's coment, I begin prowling around the room. My eyes jumping from one face to another, I spy only a handfull that pique my interest. Saveing the more attractive ones until later, I select a target.

A young one, 13 at most sits near the back. His knees tucked up under his chin, he seems to be trying to make himself as small as possible. Glideing over to him, the people on either side scoot away or move to seats further away. I reach out and toussle his light sandy locks.

He whimpers, frightend. “Hush little one, this won't hurt.” I kneel down and begin whispering a simple spell. The charm works almost instantly and the boy relaxes. Looking dazed and a slightly tipsy, he lets his feet slide off the chair.

Placeing a light kiss on his lips, I whisper, “That'sa boy” Pulling him in close I begin to feed. In less than a minuet, he utters a final harsh breath and goes limp in my arms. Setting him down gently, I lay him across two chairs. So peaceful.

Wipeing up a few drops that had escaped my lips I stand up. Sucking the bloody finger into my mouth I look back at the good doctor. Smiling softly at the looks I was getting, I ask the our host, “ Shall I go now?”

A 17 year old albino slithered away while watching the vampire suck red liquid from the little boy. He frowns. For the first time, he felt happy that he was growing older. He wasn't particularly handsome. Some say he was too tall. Some say that he looks like a ghost. Inside, he felt like a devil.

He noticed that the doctor was staring at him. He wants me to speak!!! Feeling stupid, he just stared back. He was then surprised that the doctor had smiled.

Standing up, he started to introduce himself.

'My name is Adam Jessiah, and I am a jew'

Dr. Z smiled wryly at the one who spoke out in the crowd, respoding with a murmuring under his breath as his face remained fixed to the 'vampire', "Well... some motivation might do them all some good. It's brilliant really."

As soon as Adam bursts out, he motions a nod and a wave through to Setsu, saying to him, "Now you should be a bit safer to those who matter."

Holding up a finger to issue pause to Adam, he begins to rifle through files, apparently attempting to locate this one. "Tell me more about yourself, Adam," he says distractedly.

Doffing a imaginary cap to the good doctor, I look over at the effects of my display.

My eyes slide gently over the pale boy. Yes, I'll save him for later. Drifting over to the door the others had gone though. Entering, I come upon a most amusing sight. Ignoring the large man and the loose lady, my eyes drop to the boy crawling about on the ground. My eyebrow arches appreciatively. The girl propped up next to the door chuckles.

Looking down at her I see the new aura around her. A dark red had replaced the the light blues and yellows. “And what might you're name be?” “Amber” she answers shortly. With a small bow, I pass her and walk over to a strange machine. With food types listed upon it, I assume it will dispense sustenance.

After a fer moments of pondering, I press my finger over the 'Fruit' button. As I wait for my food, my gaze wanders over to the little girl in the corner. So innocent. . . .

Red grapes are laboriously dispensed.

Setsu can't help but notice the girl's gaze, fixed in fascination onto a tiny roll of paper she has just extracted from the center of one of her hotdogs.

The vampire had caught his gaze. He'd watched Setsu go to the machines, and how his gaze now turned on the girl beside him...

With a powerful leap, the creature lands next to Setsu. "You're getting slow, bloodfang. The child is under my wing."

Setsu raises an eyebrow. "And who are you to deny me prey?"

The creature smiles. "And you did not even notice Amber? She noticed you, I wager. She'll seek your contract. She'll find how to kill you. She'll make sure you die, forever."

"What are you talking about?"

The creature blinks. Then he laughs. "You really don't know? You really don't know! You really don't... this will be interesting. Very interesting. Do not take the girl, young bloodfang. You will regret it... and there are more pressing matters. The food is poisoned." With that, the creature tuns and returns to the table, perching on its edge.

Scooping up the meager fare, I walk calmly over to the one who addressed me. I watch his aura flicker and prance about him. It's deep purple hues giving me little cause for alarm. With one of my more serious smile I say “Do not worry, young fire child, I have no intention of harming the little one. And, if as you say, she's under your wing, then you and I may have a bit in common”

With that I brush slowly past, feeling the fire child's eyes holding hard to my back. The intensity of the burn brings me a bit of comfort. The child, too engrossed in the paper she holds in her delicate little hands, takes no note of me as I sit down calmly beside her.

Keeping the fire child's words in mind, I pick up one of the ripe fruits from my hand. Considering the fact that I'd just taken new blood, I put it to my lips. Using one of my fangs, I pierce the tender skin of the grape. As I suck out the juices, I can feel the fire child's unease at my proximity to the little one.

Glancing over, the girl had unfurled the paper. I know it's considered rude, but I take a good look at what is written.

Adam waited before replying. His eyebrow had already started twitching, and he was getting nervous. Taking a deep breath, he started to speak.

"Doc, I think I am the angel of death.'

Dr.Z raised his eyebrow.

'Wherever I go, there has been a death. My mum died the day I was born and my dad died when I just learnt how to walk.'

Now, he looked down and his eyes started to redden.

'I have killed 4 times now. Ive also been to 14 places where a murder took place and I always seem to have a motive. Doc, there's always a time when i forget everything. I sort of go in to a trance, and then come back with no remembrance of what I did.

'I remember only killing four times, but the rest of the places, I don't remember what happened. You see doc, there has been a death wherever I go.'

As he said this, his eyes turned to the body of a little boy, whose life was just taken by a vampire.

He stood there transfixed, and his body seemed to shudder, his eyes started to emit a dull pearly glow, and then he spoke again.

'I think i feel like killing again' he said his lips curling up to a dry smile. His voice had changed now, it sounded sort of metallic, as if coming from a robot.

Adam was going into a trance again.

"Adam!" Dr.Z shouts as he snaps his fingers repeatedly trying to get the man's attention. 'Snap!' 'Snap!' 'Snap!' With each snap, a tiny jolt courses through Adam, tearing him out of the trance he's about to enter. "Adam!"

"Wha?" Adam replies, now a bit irritated and confused.

"I'm quite certain you're right. I've reviewed your files and... yes, I agree. We'll just have to make sure you have CONTROL over whatever you are, no? But not everything can be accomplished in but a few brief moments. Go. Go to the others now and eat something. You'll be needing your strength."

~

Meanwhile, Setsu notices the girl is trying to read the message upside down of course. He hardly notices just how fulfilling the 'blood' of these grapes are at first, but before long, an exciting, hyperactive energy begins to fill him, while depriving him of any thrist for blood that may yet remain, if only for a brief respite for now.

Finding it harder and harder to focus, and struggling to read upside down along with the girl, he at least makes out the header to read,

"Now then, time to get to the MEAT of the matter."

Richard, in his desperation tried to remember the lonesome, peaceful moments of his 18 years of living, but to no success. There were only few, and those were surrounded by pain. He grabbed his hair and rocked, falling to the side, crawling against the wall...

...The girl, Amber, having grown bored of listening for newcomers, makes her way over to an empty corner of the room, grabbing one of the few remaining chairs that Wendy has not used for her 'castle'. She observes the strange antics of the others, and decides that she wishes to converse with someone familiar. She releases her hold on Celene...

"I'm so glad that we didn't eat too much of that cupcake," I say quietly, nodding towards Wendy. "That could be us right now, you know." I sigh deeply. "Some interesting characters we've got here, don't you think?" I pause, waiting for her to answer. "Don't you want to talk to me? Having been restricted for all this time, I would have thought you'd be dying for a natter." I smile knowingly, only too aware that she's ignoring me for that very reason. "Stop sulking, and tell me, what do you think of these 'others'?"

I give her a few minutes, waiting for her to reply to my question.

"Celene, for christ's sake! I'm bored out of my mind here! You'd better say something soon, or I'm going to have to go find my amusement elsewhere."

"Something," comes the sulky reply at last. I chuckle quietly.

"Knew that would get you talking. So... what do you think of them?"

"I don't like them," Celene says, "They scare me, and I don't want to be here."

"I'll agree with you on one part of that, I don't like them either. But I'm most certainly not scared of them, and I can't understand why you are either. We're perfectly capable of looking after ourself. Well, I am anyway, so why do you feel the need to fear them?"

"We've done some bad things, Amber, but we've never taken on people like this before. There are other... murderers here, I can feel them." I can feel it too, but it doesn't bother me. "The others have always been... weaker. You've threatened that wild-looking man already, what if he decides to call your bluff, do you really think you can take him on? He's alot bigger than you for one thing."

"Dearest Celene," I chuckle again, at the ridiculousness of her words. "You know only too well, that one shouldn't judge another on appearences alone. What does size matter, when one possesses such cunning as I. I even have a few surprises hidden away from you." I can feel her trying to seek them out, rifling through our shared mind. "If you don't stop that, I will cage you up again, and fullfill my prior threat." She stops immediately, not wanting to by surpressed again, and certainly not wanting me to interact with these nutjobs that surround us.

"How is it that you can do that to me, but I can't to you?"

"You probably could if you tried hard enough," I reply, "but you don't. Personally, I think that, though you might not realise it, you need me, to keep you from falling completely to pieces. And, though it pains me to admit it, I need you too." I gesture towards the wild-man. "What he said earlier, about having repressed you, but not killed you, it didn't make any sense to me. We are one. These thoughts, these feelings that each of us have, they belong to the same soul, split or not. One cannot exist without the other, for it would then be only half a soul."

I pause, sensing that she listened intently to my words, drinking them in. It felt like she almost... cherished them. She wanted to be needed, to be loved in such a way that she never had been by anyone. I sighed deeply once again.

"Truth is, Celene, we can't rely on anyone, but each other. That's something that we've discovered the hard way, so many times over the years. One such as he..." I nod again towards the wild-man, "... one so crazed and uncontrolled, couldn't possibly understand such a thing, which is why he thinks that I seek to kill you... Everyone needs to have someone to lean on."

I end my little speech there, feeling a little awkward at revealing my weakness to her. My one weakness. I have no care for any other person in the whole world, on the contrary, I feel pure hate for all of them, and can imagine nothing more delicious than seeing the oceans turn red with their blood. I care only for me, and, in turn, for Celene. I brush the thoughts aside. At least she was the only one that knew.

I glance over to where the tall man, with the long dark hair, is sat next to the little girl. I had decided, when he'd entered the room earlier, that I liked his calm, collected manner, though that wouldn't protect him in the long run. In the little girls hands, I notice, is a unfurled scroll of paper, and both she and the man beside her are trying to read whatever is written upon it. I am sparked with curiousity, and I stand and walk, making my way over to the water-cooler, which is situated near them. The wild-man, I notice, watches them too.

I help myself to the water, and then turn to face them.

"So, what've you got there?" I ask, with another of my unnnerving smiles.

Feeling my body tingle and burn, I watch the girl Amber approach. Pondering the words on the paper, I find myself rather happy. 'I like this one' I think, biting into another grape. When Amber turns to me, I feel myself a little on edge. I want to fight.

“So what have you got there?” The question makes my energy pulse. Yes, I want to fight. Scooping up the girl, I can practically hear the fire child's heckles raise. “Eep!” she lets out, startled. “Hush now little one. I'm just trying to keep you safe.” Walking over to the fire child, I set the girl down on the table next to him. Wide eyed, the girl sits frozen, starring at him.

I lean over to whisper to him, “I suppose you can tell, as I do, the little one needs to stay away from,” Thumbing over my shoulder at the girl Amber, “that.” Nodding in acknowledgment to my words, he looks over at Amber. Turning back to her, I smile softly. “You seem a capable young woman. Care for a little match? My body sings with the need for a good fight.” Popping my neck, I flex, the settle into a low fighting stance.

Spurred on by the childlike elation she feels from the drugged cherry, Wendy climbs to the top of her chair tower. She squeals with delight at the pandemoneum developing below her as more 'residents' enter the cafeteria. It makes an exciting change to the uncomfortable quiet of before.

Stripped of her inhibitions and sense of fear, she laughs, and launches herself from her precarious perch to see how far she can jump. The stack of chairs tips and smashes to the floor as she falls.

Holding up a hand I say, “One moment please.” Stepping back a few feet, I hold my arms out. With a small 'Oof' I catch the crazy castle lady, her weight causing me to fall unceremoniously onto my backside. Still spread out superman style in my arms, I lift her, and myself off the ground.

Setting her on her feet, I grab her shoulders and say, “While I have come across many occasions where harming yourself is necessary, I don't believe there is any reason everyone here should be forced to see your brain matter splattered across the floor.” Glancing over at the boy in the corner, I continue, “Though I'm sure there are those here who would enjoy the sight, that little girl behind me has been through enough, wouldn't you say Wendy?”

With a 'Thump' Wendy lands a punch on my collar bone. Sticking out her tongue, she runs back over to her 'castle' and starts rebuilding. Shrugging I turn back to Amber. Now, where were we?

Wendy piles the chairs on top of the table even higher than before, and climbs once more to the top.

She pulls from her sleeve the tiny scroll of paper that she'd scooped up during Setsu's heroic attempt, and stares at the heading printed at the top with wide eyes.

...The girl, Amber, ignores the tall, dark-haired man, as she watches Wendy piling up the chairs once more...

I wave the tall man's comment away, concentrating on Wendy.

"Not now, leave me be... I could have sworn I saw..."

I watch as Wendy continues to pile up the chairs, higher and higher, oblivious to all else in the room.

"Amber," Celene says quietly, "Are you sure it's a good idea to just ignore him?"

But I'm not listening. Wendy is now perched upon the procariously piled chairs, and in her hands...

"She has the scroll... I knew I saw her take it."

...The girl, Amber, her curiousity overwhelming her, decides that she needs to know what the scroll says...

Welcome to the Nuthouse
Part 3

She has little need to wonder, for Wendy finds herself impulsed to read it aloud!

"Now then, time to get to the MEAT of the matter.

Before you all leave this room, ONE of you shall die! And it shall not be by any ONE of your hands, but rather, by concensus! You must all come together and AGREE upon which one of you shall not see the light of another day. The decision MUST be unanimous. If any of you shall insist to press the point by slaying another, YOU shall be slain and it SHALL NOT void the fact that BY DECISION of the UNANIMOUS whole, one among you shall die before you progress!

Enjoy,
Dr. Z"

All have gone silent to hear her she realizes, as her voice tapers off near the end of the note. No sooner has she pronounced the final Z, then 'Adam' enters the room.

"What?" Adam asks as everyone shifts their eyes to him, the door behind him visibly and audibly latching shut tight upon closing behind him, a bar swiveling down into place to bar you all into the tiny room.

~

Meanwhile, outside, Dr. Z reviews the remaining files.

"I'm dissapointed with the few who remain," He states, disdainfully. "No matter what your reasons, I deem you UNTREATABLE!" Reaching up under the podium, he presses a little white button.

A hiss whooshes forth from the vents above and soon the room is filled with a noxious gas. Soon, none but the doctor stand. And certainly, only the Doctor is laughing!

...The girl, Amber, listens as Wendy reads this new revelation aloud, shaking her head in disbelief...

"When he says unanimous, does he mean... everyone?" I say outloud, to the room full of equally edgy people, looking around at them all. "Like any of us is going to offer ourselves up to be slaughtered!"

The unthinkable has happened, and the one thing that I care about in all the world is now potentially at risk. I turn to the tall guy, and manage to flash him a smirk, despite my dour mood.

"I guess our fight is off," I hiss at him. Then I wander over to a corner, and slump down onto the floor.

"This is heavy..." I whisper to Celene, "So much so, that, if I didn't think you offer yourself up on a plate to be the first to go, I'd let you take over again, and have you deal with it." For once, I share Celene's fear, and I don't like it, not one bit.

...The girl, Amber, remains in her corner, waiting for one of the others to speak...

Wendy looks down at Adam from her perch. Having just come in to the room, he's unaware of the note she's just read out to her fellow inmates.

"I wouldn't trust the food here, if I were you," she tells him. "Hungry? Read this first. It'll soon kill your appetite." She attempts to throw the paper to him, but it flutters randomly to the ground.

The creature sniffs at his skin. At long last, the doctor's drug is wearing off. If Setsu had bothered to glance his way, he would have seen the purple aura deepen and flare into a black flame that radiated from the core of the man...

To all the others, the only change is a curl in the neck and a twitch in the lips. "The doctor is unsubtle, is he not? I must remind my companions that some of us..."

His eyes flicker over the bloodfang, the cleanser...

"...some of us cannot be killed by mortal means." He wraps a hand over Ally's shoulder. "And I say that this child is my possession; those that harm her will find EXACTLY why I am HERE!"

He sniffs the air, cautiously attempting to determine if there's another gas-drug in this room. "I for one nominate the man with the most flesh. I have not eaten, and I will not consent to consuming poisoned food...."

As everyone seems to be eyeing everyone else, wondering, Who will we select... my God... not ME I hope! (well, almost everybody), a pall of mistrust settles over the room. Some must be thinking, I can't do it! I can't make a decision that will lead to someone else's death! Others, Which of these idiots do I dislike the most. And under it all, nearly everyone must be wondering, HOW are we EVER going to come to a concensus on this? And where the HELL have we ended up? This surely isn't any sort of TREATMENT??? Is it?

A voice suddenly echoes from an unseen speaker somewhere in the room, though the sound fills the small chamber so thoroughly that it's next to impossible to place its origin. The voice, of course, is that of the 'good' Doctor.

"Allow me to expand upon this little challenge. If none are selected, ALL of you will die! Furthermore, I must take a brief moment to explain how the decision making process will work here.

First of all, the machine which has heretofore given you food with perspective shall now convert itself to a voting tool. As you may have guessed, the machine buttons recognize the identity of the individual whom selects from it. And the buttons that now whirr to face you, each inscribed with a name, each of you assigned one button, shall become your voting tool.

I will allow you up to ten voting rounds to make a unified determination. Those of you who care not to vote, or refuse to, shall become a default vote for the individual whom has been selected by the majority of the others. Therefore, even choosing NOT to choose, is yet a choice nevertheless.

I shall give you the next ten minutes (1 week real time) to discuss and strategize whom will be our evening's victim."

Abruptly, as the machine seems to convert itself, its food selection panel disappearing and being replaced by the voting tool Dr Z mentioned, the voice finishes its speech, leaving you once more to cast shifty glares at one another.

This has to be some sort of test, Wendy thinks. She casts her mind back to the doctor's introductory speech.

She looks around at her fellow inmates, reasoning that like her, none of them are what they seem, and if the doctor is to be believed, it is because to them the world is not as it seems.

It may all be in the roll of a dice, she thinks, and climbs down from her tower. She approaches the vending machine and presses the button, her eye on the man with the dice in his hand.

The voice crackles across the speaker once more upon Wendy's button press.

"The device is not powered on to receive your votes quite yet. You have nine minutes yet remaining to discuss to a unified conclusion." It seems to interrupt its own cackle with an additional, "However, nice to see some initiative Wendy... especially from the one I would have thought the LEAST murderous among you. I wonder... what is it that you have against the roll-player?"

His voice ends, leaving Wendy amidst the stares of the others.

Richard shakes his head, recovering from the emotional bath. He memorized the whole deal without fail though, and he was quite lucid, though torn. He thought and thought about choosing... But who to choose? Why would he choose? He never meant anybody harm, not really anyway. He liked people being in worst position than him, maybe because it gave him hope or comfort or just made him feel safe and superior. Nevertheless, his intentions were never really quite mad.

He looked around the room, seeing some really shady and scary figures. Even he, emotinoally challenged as he was, saw that there was definitely something wrong with the creature of visually barely scathed flesh, but a shattered soul, if any. This was beyond medical help, way beyond. But still, it's never worth to kill unless you are really threatened, and he would not take the first strike. There were others, worse than him, some of them even deserving the punishment of death, while others deserved a punishment more severe than that.

"There is no logic in the doctor's orders. What kind of treatment is this? This is not a gladiator arena. I for one don't want any of you to die. We barely know each other and the only things we can judge on are our physical appearances, our "gut feeling" about each other and the scarce interactions between each other. I don't want to die, no." He walked by the wall and then sat on a dirty chair, which was unusual even for him. "I can't believe this..."

...The girl, Amber, still slumped on the floor, listening and watching the others, and finding that the fear of what might happen is just too much to deal with...

"Do you want to die?" I murmer to Celene, feeling her own fear and worry pressing against our shared consciousness. "I know that you might feel that we deserve to, but is it really what you want?"

"No," she replies quietly. "No, I don't want to die. But I also don't want to kill, and I don't seem to have any more choice on that matter as this, do I? I don't want to be here. I don't want my parents to hate me. I don't want to be... split like this, I want to be whole. I think we can safely establish that I don't get what I want very often."

I pause before answering. I'm not entirely sure about how she will react to this situation, but I can't take it anymore.

"Good enough," I finally reply, "Try not to get us killed... please. And if you do something stupid, Celene, I will take as many of them as I can with me, you got that?"

... The girl Amber disappears, delivering control back to Celene...

"Amber?" I say, quietly. But her silence only confirms what I already know. She has retreated to the furthest corner of my consciousness, unable and unwilling to deal with the situation at hand.

I look around at the roomful of people, some of whom I dislike, and others I have no real opinion of. The boy, Richard, was right. We hardly knew each other, yet we were being forced to choose who was to live, and who was to die. Should we go for the weakest, and vote tactically, or for the person we disliked the most, or deemed the most dangerous? I let out a short, mirthless laugh, as I realise that I could be considered that by many of the people here. Added to that, we were only given ten minutes to decide, a minute of which had already gone.

I look at Richard, where he is sat in a chair, by the wall.

"I feel the same, but it seems that we don't really have a choice. Unless we all want to die, we have to pick someone. We just have to work out how we're going to do it. There is no way we can know what awaits us after this, or who here might come in use later on. So how do we choose?"

...The girl, Celene, awaits the others response...

The creature looks at Celene closely. "Ah. The weak half...."

He then turns to face the others. "In my view, practicality is our measure. I cannot die, save by flames, and that would bring forth a new world era involving much chaos." He chuckles. "Somehow, doubt you all would like that, you worthless mortal vermin dirtlings...."

A finger points at Setsu. "He is a bloodfang, what you would call a vampire; you can't kill those without finding their contract first. The woman," a nod at Celene, "houses a cleanser who would not allow her to die. The newcomer's death would destroy the universe by paradox. And the child is mine; she could die, but she won't. Not yet; she has such potential..."

He sniffs at Aly's hair, making the girl somewhat uncomfortable. Then he turns toward the other members of the room.

"The doctor, the fat on, the mistress, the hero.... which one would least service us in our stay here?"

...The girl, Celene, looks up at the words of the wildman...

I am surprised by the jolt of annoyance running through me, and even more surprised to find that it comes from me, and not Amber. Though it's not long before she's there, radiating pure hate towards the wildman.

"He dares to call you 'the weak half'! We are one, and as strong as each other, regardless of what anyone else thinks." She pauses, and I know she's pondering something secretly. Finally she speaks again. "I have a proposition for you Celene. Let us 'repair' ourself. I know that we split for a reason, but I truly think that we will work better as a whole in this situation. Plus, I'm getting tired of being refered to as though I am an invader of your body. It belongs to me as much as to you. What do you say?"

I listen to her, frightened at the prospect of her feelings and desires being my own. But then, it would also work vice versa, she would gain a little of my compassion and morals. As much as the thought daunted me, I agreed.

"You're right," I admit, "Let's go for it."

Immediately, the empty feeling, that I have felt for so long, begins to fill. I feel her emotions and desires merging with my own, becoming my own. Within mere moments it's over, we are complete once again. A feat that multiple doctors and specialists have tried and failed to succeed in over the last couple of years, we have managed in thirty seconds. I feel stronger than I have in months. I feel controlled, and brave, and lucid. It feels good...

...The girl, Amber Celene Merrick, gets to her feet...

"I have a proposal to make," I announce to the other residents. I turn to the wildman. "You are so keen to decide who deserves to live, and who does not. Who is 'weak'" I say the word with scornful emphasis, "and who is strong. Like I said before, we have no idea who will be of use for what lies ahead of us, whether it be brains, brawn, size or experience that makes them worthy. None of us, including you, can know any of these things." I turn away, walking a few steps into the centre of the group. "But there is one thing that I do know... I have a certain curiousity, about your claims to having a certain level of... immortality. I wish to put these claims to the test." I turn back to him, with a small smile. "I propose that we choose you."

The creature scans the girl even more carefully. "...You have destroyed yourself, half you not? no matter. The cleanser will come out again. You still are not amongst my choices."

He turns again to Leroy. "You! Argue your case. Explain why we should spare you. I listen with great in-ter-esssssst...."

The cautious stare of the lady by the machine slowly penetrated his awareness. Nothing in the time since entering the 'food' room had registered on Paul. Lost to his own world he'd hunkered down in a corner whilst mentally traversing field and forest, slaying goblins, trolls and other evils along the way.

Now a series of rapid blinks brought him back to the small room. A nervous flick of the eyes upwards spies the scrap of paper on the floor nearby and a random impulse makes him reach out and snatch it, holding it near his chest protectively as if the most precious item in the world. As he reads he realises he's already heard it, some unconscious part of his mind absorbing all he'd heard in the room despite not being aware.

He risked another glance around. The lady was still eyeing him. Others had been talking. With some effort he dredged through his memories to recall what had been said. There was one man, louder than the others. Talking a lot. Talk of chaos and flames. The words of a demon as far as Paul was concerned.

Once again his hands made the shaking action of preparing his die for some decision. He threw them against the corner he crouched in, once again noting the scores. The fear and confusion faded from his eyes and he rose smoothly to his full height.

"This place be riddled with demons it seems. But fear not brave warriors and fair maidens, Captain Awesome his here to see you safe. There is but one course open to us. If the magic device has the power to kill then we must turn its terrible power upon the evil amongst us. The evil such as this." As he finishes, complete with a similar heroic pose as his threat to the Doctor, he thrusts out his imaginary sword toward the loud wild man.

Wendy stares in the direction from where the Doctor's voice came. "Richard vocalised my precise thoughts before I did," she replies to the Doctor. "How can I be expected to make a choice in so little time, with so little knowledge of these people here? So in answer to your question, I have nothing against the Roll Player, it is simply a random vote.

But since it is not yet valid, and we still have some minutes left, I would like to ask you, Dr Z, what gain would you and this establishment make should one of us die, and what would you or it lose if all of us died?"

"Suffice it to be known," the voice speaks from the unseen speakers, "I have much to be gained from the decision you all have to make. Enough that it inspires the need to place the pressure upon you that has been placed. Perhaps you should be asking yourselves what YOU might have to gain by making a decision on this matter."

Once more, Dr Z has left you all in thought.

Leroy is sprawled with his back leaning against the wall and he is once again sweating and breathing heavily. The man with hot blood in his veins, who looks as though he may truly have fire burning inside of him, stands over Leroy like an executioner. Leroy laughs pitifully.

"You want to eat me?" he asks of the demon. "I hope you have a big take-out box, cause I don't think you can handle me in one sitting. And as for arguing my case, what case? I'm a mental case, that's what I am. I have no skills, I can't even run a few laps around this cafeteria without nearly dying. And you know what else?"

Leroy sits up and stares directly into the man's evil eyes. "I don't blame you for wanting to eat me. Actually you look pretty tasty to me too. Like barbeque ribs, nice and hot, and the meat is so tender, it's practically falling off the bones. I think you got it right, my friend. You should kill me. You should do it before I make you into a buffet."

Leroy leans back again and closes his eyes. He's in pain all over and he doesn't want to worry about anything, even the threat that everyone will die if a unanimous decision isn't made. He could be the one who dies for all he cares. It would have happened a long time ago if he believed in suicide.

The voice from the hidden speakers chimes in once more, "It was my understanding, Rupert, that you sought your own destruction. You claim that you might only be destroyed by fire. I most certainly wouldn't mind providing you the chance to prove this and be rid of your despised flesh. Thus, I find it surprising you have not yet nominated yourself.

In light of the potential end of your mortality, has your perspective altered?"

Dr. Z allows the question to hang in the air.

...The girl, Amber Celene Merrick, still standing in the centre of the room, listens intently to the others...

I try to process the large amount of information, coming at me from all angles. Leroy's vague, but sinister confession, Paul's choice, aimed, like myself, at the wildman, and most of all, the bombardment of declarations from Dr Z, over the seemingly invisible speaker. Had I still been a half, I would have fallen to pieces already, either reacting with violence, or merely curling into a ball in the corner of the room, unable to cope. Now that I am once again whole, the fear is there, Celene's fear, but it's balanced out by Amber's strength, and will to survive. Despite the fear, and the pressure, there is a small feeling of elation too.

I begin to wonder what Z meant, when he said to ask ourselves what 'we' might gain from making a decision. Does he merely mean that we gain the chance to live a while longer, or something else? Again, I wonder what we are all doing in this place. I can barely remember the bus journey here, or how I ended up on the bus in the first place. My past exists in flashes of memory, most likely a side effect of the split.

I look around again at the others, this room of strangers. Each of them have done something to get in here, but, with most of them, what that something is I don't know. All I know is, some of them are highly dangerous, some of them admitting so. Others are weaker, including the little girl, Ally. As I look at her, I can see the children again, the ones that I... No, she most certainly does not deserve to be the one to die. I will have no part in such an act again. I firmly decide to stick to my choice, though a thought does cross my mind. What on earth did a child do to end up in a place like this?

"Let the voting begin..." chimes the Doctor's voice as the machine lights up and humms with energy.

"You have ten minutes to vote. (1 wk)"

"Only 4 minutes (3 days) left to vote. I realize, as we have a split vote, we shall not be having a final decision this time around. Nevertheless, declaring your opinions with your votes can go a long way towards narrowing the field.

Furthermore, consider that this time might be taken to work out a method to devise your ulitmate decision. Voting for the second round shall begin immediately upon the completion of this failed voting round."

The voice emerges from unseen speakers once again, "Voting for this round is complete and the results are now listed on the screen of the voting box.

I have taken note that only one among you, the child, has not voted. Good. Assert yourselves here, but do try to come to a concensus... for your own sakes.

A new voting round now begins. This time, I shall be putting up only those who have been voted for thus far.

Now this is very important:

In THIS vote we shall be selecting a survivor. A consensus here is unnecessary. The one who gets the most votes (both if there is a tie) shall be elminated from consideration.

I shall consider how to arrange the next poll as this one runs. In the meantime, I would be discussing how to come to a final conclusion among you."

The screen flickers and displays the results of the last poll:
Who Among You Shall Die? (Round 1)
Celene
12% [ 1 ]
Leroy
12% [ 1 ]
Wendy
0% [ 0 ]
Richard
12% [ 1 ]
Paul
0% [ 0 ]
Ally
0% [ 0 ]
Rupert
50% [ 4 ]
Setsu
0% [ 0 ]
Adam
12% [ 1 ]

Total Votes : 8

And the buttons light up on the names that received votes previously, inviting your next selection for a survivor.

Welcome to the Nuthouse
Part 4
Roommate Selection

"Very well," Dr Z's voice blares from the speakers. "I tire of this exercise. And besides, its given me what I wished to know regarding your personalities. That was really all this was for in the first place."

As he speaks, the voting machine begins to slowly slide to the side, revealing a dark passage with stairs carved into the stone leading down to a dimly lit hallway about ten feet under the bedrock upon which this facility seems built.

The voice continues, "I want only two at a time to enter the passage. These groups shall be... room-mates. You may work out among you who you will bunk with. Once you have a partner, you may proceed downward and take one of the rooms lining the hall.

Do not attempt to enter the passage without being in physical contact with your partner. You have been warned."

And like that, the strain of attempting to determine which of you should die on this day vanishes, to be replaced with a new challenge.

Richard looks sideways and says:

"Well, I'll be. So we all get to live after all? Sure got my adrenals in a spin..."

He looks around.

"I'll take whoever is left or whoever wants to bunk with me. I'm clean but not a clean freak and everything can be arranged."

A slow smile spreads across my face. Sliding over to the room's newest addition, I slip an arm around his shoulders. Giving him my sweetest smile, I ask, “How about rooming with me, little one?”

...The girl, Amber Celene Merrick, peers down the staircase, into the ill lit hallway...

A mixture of emotions shoot through my brain, like a selection of tv ads, on super fast forward... fear, panic, curiousity, determination... one after the other, along with an unexpected feeling of relief, at the thought of getting out of the cafeteria. But this passes quickly, the new lucid thinking of this whole soul starting to take hold. I look around at my fellow residents, trying to figure out who would be the best room-mate.

"Well, I find myself unable to decide which of you I would prefer as a room mate," I announce, calmly and quietly, to the others. "Though there are those of you whom I have found I like the company of less than others," I look pointedly at the wildman, and Setsu, "I don't trust a single one of you. I, more so than anyone else in this room, have no idea why any of you are here, having been the first to have admitted my crime.

"But, I'm dying to get out of this bloody room, even if it is, possibly, to another one as confined as this. And to my way of thinking, one of you will be far easier to deal with, than the whole lot of you at once. So, I don't care who I'm sharing with, but I do want to get out of here, as quickly as possible."

Wendy's choice is narrowed to Rupert, Paul, Richard and Leroy....

She scratches her head, wondering which would prove to be the most advantageous ally.

Getting no response from the boy beneath my arm, I step back. With a sigh I look around the room for another option. Hearing the one called Richard say he'd bunk with anyone, I sidle over. Still feeling a little giddy, I say, “Care to be my bunk-mate?” He stares at me for a good while before nodding. Grinning, I slip an arm around his shoulder. Steering him towards the opening, we walk through the gaping maw.

Leroy furrows his brow as he hears that he should pick a roommate.

"Doctor Z, do we have to have a roommate? Wouldn't it be safer to have our own rooms?"

"Safer for whom?" Doctor Z replies with a grin.

"... For everyone. I mean, we're all really disturbed people right? Can't I have a room to myself please? I don't like sleeping in the same room as other people...."

"You have your instructions."

Leroy covers his face with his hand and looks at the others between fingers. He can't decide this. It would be bad enough if he was assigned a roommate, but having to choose for himself... he can't do it.

"Can't you just assign us or something? I can't pick."

"Must I repeat myself? You have your instructions. And, I might add, I am looking forward to seeing the results."

Leroy feels like he is spinning. He stumbles to a wall for support as he is overcome with vertigo. Looking at the others makes it worse, so he stares at his feet and concentrates on putting one foot in front of the other. The only thing he can concentrate on is getting away from them and making slow progress toward the stairs, the only exit.

Though he has no idea what will happen if he enters the passage alone, he can not choose a partner nor can he stay there any longer. He prepares to make the fateful step with his whole body trembling.

Stepping forward, Leroy hits an invisible barrier that seems to have been erected momentarily behind the previous two, Richard and Setzu.

"Ah-ah... not so fast, Leroy. Take note that there is an odd number of individuals in this room. IF you are last to find a partner, you may be the one who remains in a room alone. That said, I didn't take you for being so withdrawn as you were one of the more talkative of those among you." states the voice from the unseen speakers.

Meanwhile, Richard and Setzu find themselves wandering down what appears to be a dungeon-like passage. At the end of the passage is a heavy steel door without a window. It appears sealed shut, presumably locked. However there are fairly spacious cells lining the left and right of the passage, open steel bar doors inviting them to select a room. As they look inside, each room is given identical decor, a bunk bed, a table, a mini kitchen, toilet facilities, a shower, a sink, some storage cabinets, a couple of chairs. Not too bad for what appears to also be an oversized jail cell.

However, each room differs in the color painted on its walls. Each major color of the rainbow is represented in a room, Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, and Purple. It is clear all that can really be done at this point is selecting which room you shall reside in.

"What do you think Setzu? I'd like it blue, the other colors just hurt my eyes..."

Ally didn't really want to share a room with anyone, but as Leroy had already made an attempt to go through without a partner and failed, then she had to make a choice. So who did she feel safest sharing a room with?

I smile down at the boy Richard and say, “Blue it is then. I enjoy the color's calming effect.” With that, my arm still around the boy's shoulder, I walk into the cell. Letting him go, I wander over to the bunk beds and ask, “May I have the bottom bunk?”

"Fine with me, Setzu. I'm a calm, deep sleeper, so I won't be falling down."

Leroy's foot feels the pins and needles of partial numbness, though he doesn't know if it is his own system's response to vertigo, or if it came from kicking the barrier. Feeling resistance from something invisible adds even more disorientation. It pushes him to the point where he feels he can not let himself be pushed anymore. He looks at the group, forcing himself to make that dreaded choice. It will have to be the one he likes least.

"Rupert. You want a partner?"

As soon as Richard and Setzu enter their 'blue' room, the door shuts behind them, leaving them to explore their environment, isolated from the hall except by a tiny barred window at the top, perhaps but a hand's width in size.

"Do not be alarmed," Dr Z announced from unseen speakers that are not quite so blaring as they were in the 'cafeteria'. "You are being given some time to get familiar with your room. Feel free to get to know one another. You may appreciate this brief respite and the opportunities it may provide."

If you feel curious about any features, the narrator is prepared to answer your investigative questions regarding them.

Meanwhile, back in the cafeteria above, Dr Z announces, "The next pair may enter."

Wendy furrows her brow at Leroy's offer to Rupert. Not sure why she resents Leroy's choice - all three of them are as repulsive to her as each other - for different reasons, she resigns herself to her choice.

She looks at Paul who is standing with his legs apart, hands on hips, like Superman, or something. At least his delusion seems the easiest to deal with.

"I'll bunk with you then, Captain Awesome."

Slipping down into my new bed, I stretch out on my back. Wiggling my feet, I carefully wriggling out of my socks. Rolling over, I look up at my cellmate. He arches an eyebrow at me so I smile and roll over on to my stomach. Tucking my pillow under my chin, I wait for further instruction.
