They were crucial for his finding werewolves, for they had a special touch that would show him their unholy souls and give him the courage to vanquish them. Hal hoped that no one had found them before nightfall, for they could kill anyone who tried to touch the lenses.
The garden was still, but Hal was certain that inside its hedges there lurked figures shrouded by magic. Cautiously he held out his hand and pointed where he thought he could feel their presence. But instead, a stream of ectoplasma caught him in the shoulder, forcing him to take cover.
Quickly, Hal cast an illusion spell. He hoped the smell that emitted from the wand would distract the intruders, whatever their plans were. Perhaps the fine dusting of pollen would enhance the potency of his spell. He waited with baited breath.
Suddenly, a great wind blew and his shirt off, he was shocked to discover that he had forgotten to cast a silencing spell, leaving him unable to hide from the gnomes. Each footstep made by Hal would release a bubble of slow acting fungus that would disintegrate, but leave a fragrant trail of spores as he went. Smirking, Hal waved his hat around, a cloud of bluish red insects collecting where the spores were rising. The gnomes howled indignantly, waving their hats in frustration.
