The freezing water was almost a relief as Apollo made contact with it. He had just crashed through five stories of concrete, wood and tile straight into a pitch black room filled with water that would make a polar bear feel at home For a minute or so, he didn't fight it. He didn't do anything. He just floated. He muscles ached. They usually did after a fight but this was different. The fight wasn't even over yet and even worse. He was losing. Once his lungs decided that oxygen would be a bonus, he swam for the surface.

The action seemed like it was taking forever and then it hit him why. The water was moving too. Before He could think of a way out of his predicament, some force grabbed him and ejected him from the water. He crashed through the final floor he had already passed through and landed with a thud on the ground.

“Never going to win,” a voice hissed in his ear. Glancing up, he saw a stream of light flowing down from the previous holes he had made. Reaching toward it, a couple streams of light flowed into his hand, turning it into a torch.

“Nice of you to leave me a bit of light, Voltage,” Apollo said. Glancing around, he saw that he was in an unfinished set of offices. “Come on. Show yourselves, all of you. Come on!”

An amused chuckle filled the room and before he knew it there was a flash of light and his surroundings changed. He was now in a different world. A realm made of fire and rock. Normal men would have been terrified but Apollo just laughed.

“Mr. R,” he said. “Good to see that your part of this. What's your role? The escape plan?”

“No, he's the distraction,” another voice answered. Directly in front of him, an individual appeared. He was shorter and had a mess of short rainbow colored hair. He was dressed in a pair of black jeans and a black vest. A pair of green goggles covered his eyes. Gekko. Superhuman ability to blend in to his environments. Royal pain in the ass.

Gekko leapt into the air and delivered a roundhouse kick to the side of Apollo's head. Before he could hit the ground, he felt himself being grabbed by the back of the skull. After another blast of bright light, he found himself being thrown through a wall into a dimly lit apartment.

As he started to stand, a strange sensation hit him. It was like someone was digging their fingers into his brain. Reacting quickly, he reached up and used the remaining light to create a flash and blind the individual by him. A tall man dressed in an old cultists robes stumble back and collapsed to the ground.

Hearing steps nearby, he grabbed the fallen form of Mackey and threw him into a man dressed in purple spandex and a metal helmet. Rushing past them, Apollo saw the individual behind this whole attack. He was dressed in a copper suit complete with domino mask. Voltage.

Charging ahead, he found himself stopped as a swarm of locusts suddenly engulfed him. “Never win. The age of heroes is dead.” They all roared in his ears. He managed to get away and as he swung at Voltage, his hand went right through him. The Illusion Master.

Before another thought could enter his brain, he felt the ground beneath him give way. Glancing over his shoulder, he saw a figure dressed in rags, his hand on the ground. Rusty.

The floor gave way and Apollo barely caught himself on the ledge. Looking down, he could make out Voltage's silhouette. Below him was the almost arctic water he had fallen in before. The water was sparking and buzzing from contact with the madman below. A million thoughts ran through the hero's mind in the final seconds before the floor gave way under his fingers. He closed his eyes and as he made contact with the water, his body was filled with electricity. In a matter of moments, he was dead.

With Apollo's demise, thus marked the end of the heroes. Apollo was the final one and he had been felled. Voltage turned himself in immediately after. Without heroes, he saw no more reason in remaining free. Shortly after imprisonment, he fell into a coma. To him, there was no more reason to even be awake. The other eight took over Savage City and declared that it was theirs. No one argued. Until the heroes started to return. People with exceptional abilities started to stand up to the crime and corruption.

Now 2 years after the death of Apollo and six months after the rebirth of the hero, a villain has woken up in a secret prison and his generals are done playing nice.

Savage City had seemed quiet for years after the heroes died. There were no big battles. No violent clashes. Even though the villains seemed to run wild, there was some semblance of order. But something happened. People with abilities started to fight back against the Eight Madman who had split the city amongst themselves. Six months ago, the city had started to breathe again.

There are five key areas of Savage City. The Illusion Master and Gekko lurk in the central Entertainment district which is mostly made up of theatres, a movie studio and two film lots as well as Illusion Master's own haunted house. There is a small residential area within that seems to be reserved for various gangs and Gekko's own personal crew. Drowner owns the Waterfront district to the south and southeast of town. The people who live here are either the people Drowner controls or the immigrants he exploits. Mindset, Mackey and Mr. R have decided to share the area to the north which is the more upscale side of town. This is where the people with the most money reside and also the area with the most churches as well. The local TV stations and newspaper offices are also housed here and controlled by Mindset. No one knows exactly who Mackey resides in but it is widely believed it is within the Mayor. Mr. R controls the airport whenever he sees to visit our dimension. The Slums lie to the east and is collectively called Slumland and is where Rusty is said to dwell. The West is nothing but farmland and is ruled by Locust.

**********

It's a very rainy Wednesday evening in the middle of July. Amongst the heavy downpour of rain, a bit of the summer swelter still remains. Savage City is alive with activity. Even amongst all of the usual nightlife of the urban jungle, some parts of the city seem a lot more alive than normal. Alive and angry. Something major has happened to disrupt the villains. Each of their districts is booming with violent and vicious activity. The only district that seems quiet is the Farmland.

While the thunder roars above, the city screams in terror and rage.

**********

Entertainment District

Officers are reporting higher than average gang activity. Also occurring within the District, Illusion Master's Haunted House has seemingly vanished while it was full of people. Police are baffled and have no idea how to proceed. One of the individuals known to be inside is Gekko, though his involvement is unknown.

Slumland

Three apartment buildings have been demolished by Rusty. His followers are abandoning him as all three building have held them and their families. Casualties is estimated to be near a hundred. He seems to be completely unstoppable.

A couple pharmacies have reported that a swarm of locusts invaded their store and made off with various painkillers and medical supplies. They were last seen heading into an abandoned storefront.

Upscale District

Mindset is walking the streets blasting anyone that gets close. Seven people have been killed. Another ten have been placed into comas. He hasn't committed such a wild massacre since he first announced that he was starting a life of crime.

Cops are on the scene but hesitant to engage. Mindset has yet to attack them, stating they are beneath him and that he wants “a real hero” to come for him and that he's waiting.

Waterfront District

Several warehouses have been torn apart by what people are describing as a “giant bowling ball of water.” Drowner has been sighted feeling to the Marina, using the ocean to destroy everything in his path.

Police report a massacre at one of Drowners drug labs that was housed in an old warehouse. Each member within has been killed by a gunshot to the head. Reports of more shootouts continue to pour in. The were last heard at the border of the Waterfront and Slumland.

**********

Amongst details of the increase in violence and attacks. All news outlets are also reporting that captured villain Voltage is awake and there will be a press conference tomorrow where the man who murdered Apollo will actually speak just days after waking up from a mysterious coma.

The atmosphere in the Entertainment District of Savage City was one of dark and panic. Gangs roamed the streets, and police were gathered everywhere outside the area where the Haunted House had stood mere hours before. Officers wandered around, trying to decipher where the building had gone, but the blank looks upon each of their faces told that none of them had a clue.

Petra sat hunkered down at the edge of the roof of the building just across the wide street, observing all. Currently, her own mind was open to what she was certain was Illusion Master's powers at work, and the area in which the Haunted House had once stood was as vacant to her as it was to the other onlookers. She had a hunch that would all change once she put up her mind barriers. She knew such an act could alert her nemesis to her presence though, and she wanted to have some kind of plan to follow before that happened.

She shifted her position slightly, her skintight cat-suit allowing her to do so easily and with an almost feline grace. A light breeze gently tugged at the cascade of dark hair flowing down her back, as her deep-blue eyes scanned the crowd below. She knew that she wouldn't be seen from her position, despite the fact that she wasn't using her powers to remain hidden. She was looking for anything that might aid her in her mission, but was also keeping an eye open for Illusion Master himself, just in case he was standing somewhere inconspicuously watching the confusion his little stunt was causing. She wanted to be as prepared as possible.

It is cold. The ground is hard and rough. And there is some wetness on her fingertips – something cool and refreshing.

Water...

Camille’s eyes snap open. She instantly regrets the action, her vision swirling and pitching. She closes her eyes tightly to alleviate the pounding in her temples and then opens them again, this time slower, giving herself time to focus.

The first thing she notices is the puddle next to her hand, the tips of her index finger and thumb touching the surface. She stretches her hand out fully, placing her open palm entirely into the water, smiling slightly with the realization that some ability to move her body has come back to her.

The next thing she notices is the concrete. Her eyebrows knit together in confusion. She was on soft earth when she was fighting-

“Locust!” she sits up quickly. A hiss escapes her lips as she is overcome with pain. She had forgotten about her injury. She clutches her side for a few moments before gritting her teeth and putting both hands into the puddle, the water there disappearing in a matter of seconds. It does not heal her, but it dulls the pain enough that she can take better stock of her surroundings.

She sits in a decrepit building, most likely abandoned at some point or another, the windows broken allowing the rain pouring outside to come in. There are a few more small puddles around the large room and Camille scoots herself to each in turn, absorbing the water. It is not nearly enough, so she kneels – not trusting herself to stand quite yet – by one of the broken windows, hands out and palms up, the wind whipping the rain against her face, calming her.

She figures she is either in the Slumland or the Waterfront – the building she is in is far too much in disrepair to be part of the Entertainment or Upscale districts.

But how did I get here? she thinks as the raindrops beat steadily upon her face. And where is he?

Sirens wailed in the night, red and blue lights whirling and cutting the darkness. People huddled in their homes, avoiding the windows, silent and dark. Nobody was on the street. She prowled the rooftops, clinging to window ledges, looking around. Peering around around, she narrowed her eyes at the sounds of yet more gunfire. It was happening, something deep and dark was moving.

Lunging off of the rooftop, she felt that she could almost fly for a moment, casting her shadow briefly across the ground as she drifted. The warehouses on the waterfront were here intended destination. It was time to do some investigating, see why Drowner was on such a rampage. Was it to get her attention, or had something truly gotten to the villain? She needed to know.

Rubbing his brow, he stared intensely at his recent MRI and CT scans, side by side. He could feel his AI watching over his shoulder using the security camera behind him.

"Sam, what do you see?"

He leaned back and glanced at the spherical machine sitting on his work desk. "The damages are definitely localised to the frontal lobe," he told his AI. "The mind blast attacks the part of the brain responsible for our conscious mind."

"Like your personality? No loss there, then."

The young man chuckled. "You're getting pretty good at this, software."

"I am both hardware and---" the AI stopped. "Oh, a joke, I get it now. Back to the mind blast. Can we build a shield, or a jammer?"

He shook his head. "No, I still haven't yet figured out how it's doing the damage." Was it through some psychic channels? Or maybe it was through the extra-sensory dimension?

"Oh. A waste of time, then?"

"It's not!" Sam snapped defensively. Then, he exhaled defeatedly and slumped into his chair. "Okay, fine, a complete waste of time. I was hoping we could learn more from my scans. We'll need more information if we want to figure this out." Waiting impatiently for a response, Sam reached out and tapped on the spherical machine. "William?"

"Hey, don't touch that! Oh, and Sam, I think you'll want to see this," the AI replied as the news started playing on the screen next to the sphere.

The young man's eyes widened as he watched the footage. According to the frantic reporter, there was a massacre in progress somewhere in the upscale district! The cops and the perpetrator---he stiffened---Mindset---was in a standoff, and that freak was asking for a 'real hero', whatever that meant! Jumping out of his chair, he grabbed his suit, top hat and baton from his dresser. While changing into his costume, he glanced at the news report again, and swallowed. Could he really do this?

"Sam, you're not going after Mindset are you? How are you going to defeat him?"

"I'll have to figure that out when I get there," Conductor replied as he stepped into an elevator. However, his AI had a point. He was going to need help. "William, remember the girl from the hospital? The one I told you to watch?"

"The one you were suspicious about?" A CCTV recording of a woman in skin-tight body armour running across a car park appeared on his mask screen. As she approached the hospital, she flickered a little, and then suddenly she was in her day-clothes. "You were right about her, Sam. She has super abilities."

"Good. Patch me through to her cellphone. Time to introduce myself."

The Illusion Master stood in a nearby alley and watched at the brilliant terror and confusion that his little stunt has caused. His eyes moved up to the rooftops and it was there that he saw her. Shadow-Dancer. A slight chuckle interrupted his usual muttering and he moved back into the alley. He walked through the dark and slid into a secret entrance into the hidden building.

“Go. Now,” he said to his companion, once he entered. “She's here.”

Gekko stared up at Illusion Master and nodded. Gekko left through the same exit an made his way to the street. He looked around with a smirk on his face before slipping down the street without the cops seeing him. The villain ran his hands through his brightly colored hair and started to whistle a tune.

*****

The building Anthora is in has no markings or any furniture so it is impossible to tell what sort of building it is or used to be. Outside, there are the sounds of sirens and panicked screams. Somewhere off in the distance, there is the thunderous sound of a building collapsing. Thanks to a small part of wall and ceiling being removed nearby, the sounds of a nearby room soar to Anthora's ears.

“Goddamit,” Locust's voice roars. “Stupid kid in his stupid armor. Stupid bugzapper joke. I'll kill him. There is a loud sound that resembles a large fan being turned on, which is followed by Locust yelling in shock. The wind sound stops and Loucst can be heard again. “R...what the hell you doing here.”

“Time to go...” There is another burst of a windy sound and the building is once again quiet as another building can be heard falling in the distance.

*****

As Impact is investigating the warehouses, a man bursts out of one of them. He is clutching his shoulder as blood pours from a wound. He is clad in a fisherman's hat and a trenchcoat. One of Drowner's goons. Yet for once, he is the one that is filled with fear. He looks over his shoulder for a sign of his pursuer. Yet no one is seen. He continues to run for another block before stopping and looking around in fear.

*****

William spent a couple of minutes searching through polices sites and their traffic cams and the other various security systems, doing his best to keep an eye on all of the chaos.

“Sam,” William said. “I've got some information for you. After scanning several video feeds, I've got something big. Another hero being carried away by a swarm of bugs. Visual was lost somewhere near Slumland. On some security cameras, I also got visual on the hero who calls herself Impact down in the Waterfront. Chances are she's going after Drowner, who is on a rampage.”

Images of Anthora, Impact and Drowner popped up on his mask screen. “If you wish, these are a couple of other routes to take.”

Petra continued scanning the crowd for her nemesis, but to no avail. She could see no sign of Illusion Master, though she knew he would be there somewhere. She felt her caution rise further, knowing that if he wasn't aware of her presence already, as soon as she started using her powers, he very likely would be. And using up her energy before the bastard had even shown himself wasn't the wisest of choices.

Suddenly her gaze fixed upon another figure. Smaller than Petra herself, with brightly coloured hair in shades of purple and green, and dressed all in black, she knew him only too well.

“Gekko...” she murmured, narrowing her eyes at the highly recognisable figure as he started to whistle, clearly not making any effort to hide the fact the he was there.

Petra wasn't stupid. He wanted someone to make a move on him, which likely meant that he knew she could be, or already was there...which meant that he was working together with Illusion Master on this one.

“Well, little man, you're not going to be getting what you want unless it's absolutely necessary,” she said to herself.

Taking a deep breath, she put up her mind-shield and became one with the shadows in which she'd been hiding. She slipped down over the edge of the building, creeping down the wall, gliding through the shadow-world silently and undetectable. She reached street level, and remained there watching Gekko. At this closer juncture, she could see the lizard tattoos upon the small man's pale, bare arms, and the goggles he wore over his eyes. She remained hidden, waiting to see what he was planning to do before she made a move, keeping half an eye open for Illusion Master all the while. She looked up at the white, glowing orb floating in the night sky above.

'At least it's a full moon...' she thought to herself.

Camille jumps at the sudden sound of a voice. Scratchy, buzzing, seems to be everywhere at once – it had to be Locust. She stands quickly, her side only protesting slightly now, almost completely healed, and searches for where the voice had come from. She notices a large gap at the upper part of the wall and ceiling in the back of the room.

She takes a few cautious steps towards it, taking note of the sudden sound of a strong wind, but stops when a low rumbling reaches her ears. Reluctantly, she goes back to the window and sticks her head out into the rain. It is almost blindingly dark, but she can just make out the rows of buildings in the distance and the steadily growing gap among them that is one of them collapsing. She also notices the faint blinking of lights, most likely from police cars, and can hear the wailing of sirens, the shouts and screams of citizens mixed with it.

A voice – different from Locust’s – speaks from above followed by the sound of another burst of wind. Then everything is quiet. Camille darts to the opening and grows out the tendrils of her hair, hoisting herself into the room with the extensions.

“Damn it,” she sighs. Locust is gone – having left with whoever the source of the wind was. If she were to give chase, she could probably catch them....

A rumble resonates in the air, the concrete beneath Camille’s feet shakes slightly. Another collapsing building no doubt, and closer this time. She chews the bottom of her lip for a few seconds, before running at the line of windows in the room – they are broken here as well – and jumping out into the night. She whips her still-elongated hair at a nearby lamppost, swinging herself to the ground. As soon as her feet hit the earth she sprints as hard as she can towards the escalating chaos of the city.

Impact debated internally for a moment before tossing herself off the rooftop toward the scared thug. She hit the ground with the force of a wrecking ball, the pavement cracking as she stood there with arms folded, staring at him. "You are one scared looking little minnow. Leaving quite the blood trail too." She chuckled, advancing on him slowly, her footfalls weighted to add a little added presence to each step.

Looming in close to him, she slammed a hand against the brick of the wall next to him, a few cracks jumping out as a shiver of brick dust eeked out from under the blow. "Hey there little guppy, something's stirring out there. Got your boss all worked up and in a fit. Looks like you're already all tangled up in it too. Way I see it, your options are really getting slimmer by the second and survivability...well...that goes without saying."

She was silent a moment, letting him stew, before continuing on in an amicable tone. "Right now, right here, you have three options and an almost fifty-fifty survival rating. You can tell me everything I want to know, answer all my questions, and be a good little sailor and I'll pack you off to the nearest medical care facility and you might live to see another day. Or you can play the tough guy, not talk, maybe even take a swing at me...at that point I'm going to beat you within an inch of your worthless thug life you miserable minion. I give you a fifty percent survival rating depending on just how pissed off I am at you. And lastly you can always attempt suicide. I say attempt because there's always the possibility you're a total fucking loser and you manage to botch that."

She glanced around, making sure that nobody had snuck up on them during their little chat. However, if someone had, her back was to a wall and her density was up, just in case. She wasn't overly worried about being attacked. Her prime focus was on the man in the rain coat. "So what do you say? Going to help? Or am I going to drag you along with me to get a front row seat to your boss's temper tantrum. Because the cold darkness of the ocean and a few thousand pounds of force don't particularly preturb me...but they can certainly do nasty things to poor little fellows like you I hear."

Conductor reviewed each of his options as he waited for the phone call to connect. The formidable-looking hero, Impact, was busy attending to another crisis, one that involves people's homes getting bulldozed in bulk by a liquid wrecking ball. In the same neighbourhood, there were police chatter of people dropping like flies on the account of a bullet in their heads. Across town, up north, Mindset was turning rich folk into brain soup, probably for fun, and who knows what other sick things he had planned. To top it off, as icing on the cake, a potential hero might be in serious trouble, and he had no idea where she was! And why the hell isn't the woman picking up her phone?! He rubbed his forehead. Then, the call connected...only to reach her voicemail! God-dammit, we're being overwhelmed...we need more heroes!

"When you receive this message, get to the massacre in Upscale District as soon as you can. Be warned, Mindset uses powerful mind blasts."

He hung up just as the elevator door opened, revealing an old and desolate underground car park. There was a musty smell to the small place and a single vehicle occupying the only spot without an overgrowth. He wasted no time getting into his black Volkswagen Beetle.

"William, compile a report on everything we can dig up on Drowner's activities, and send it to Impact." He pulled a seat belt over his chest and fired up the ignition.

"Let me confirm, you want me to make contact with...other people?"

"It's a text message," he reasoned as he stepped on the pedal and steered his car up a level, towards the exit. "You can use pictures and whatever else you want, but no talking, you got it?"

"Oh yes, I'm very happy you've come to your senses and---"

"This is a one-time deal, William, don't get too excited. While you're at it, send her a report on the missing hero, too. The Slumland isn't very far from her current position."

"Yes, Sam, but---"

"And add this text to the message: 'Drowner in first file. Go get him. Missing hero in second file. Find her. C.'"

The AI was silent for a moment. "Whatever you say."

Conductor raised his brow. "Are you sulking?"

"It is the appropriate expression for extreme disappointment, isn't it?"

"Yes. But I'm just trying to protect you, Will. Wait, what am I doing, you don't get disappointed. You lack the chemicals for it!"

"You can stop the car," the AI said instead. "You're in your half-mile radius."

Conductor slowed the car and pulled over. "We'll talk about this later, Will," he said and activated his extra-sensory perceptions. He felt his mind opening up as the scene where Mindset was came into view. Every sound, smell, sight and texture was at his mental fingertips. Time to scout the area.

I sit quietly on a rooftop, letting my mind wander about, looking for trouble. It had been a wild week for my part of the city with crime on a steep upward climb. I'd even taken a reprieve from work, first in 5 years, so I could spend more time helping people. Wandering over to and abandoned building several streets over with my mind I feel a mental shock as a girl seems to drop on to the street out of nowhere. My mental eyes widen as she takes off at a dead sprint for destination unknown. Gauging her location and direction I pull back into myself before porting to a rooftop nearby to her. 'Well, that's just. . . . .Cool! That hair looks awesome! I wonder if she's special. . . Like me' I follow her covertly, porting from roof to roof, careful to stay just behind her.

Gekko stops walking and a slick smile appears on his face. He pulls a cigarette and lighter from a pocket in his vest. He places the cigarette between his lips and lights it. After taking a drag and exhaling the smoke, a small chuckle emerges from his lips.

"I know you're there, love," he says. "As one who blends in and spies for a living...I just know you're watching me."

He takes another drag.

"So why don't you stop cowering in the shadow like a little puppy and speak to me. Face to face."

**********

Something sparked in Anthora's mind, alerting her that someone was watching her from afar. As she raced through the streets, chaos swirled around her and she initially went unnoticed. Panic and crime ran around her but none of the thugs saw her. They just continued about their brazen acts of horror.

After a couple blocks, someone finally took notice of her. Rusty, the raggedy destroyer, who had his hands on the base of an apartment building released his grip as he saw her. With a slight smirk, he started toward her.

"Hey there, little girl, isn't it a little late for you to be wandering about all by yourself?" he asked, placing his hand on a building causing it to start to crumble and fall apart under his grip.

**********

"Look...I don't know much..." the thug says. He looks around in fear for a moment before staring back at Impact. "I'm just a cooker. He has me in a warehouse making his drugs. He doesn't' exactly let us in on all the dirty secrets. Usually he's cool but something happened tonight. Someone attacked him and the other big seven."

He reached up and placed pressure on his wound, before continuing to spill his guts about everything she might want to know. "Same guy came to the warehouse. Dressed all in black, said he needed to get a message across and started firing. Don't know where Boss is headed. Last thing I heard was he needed to see Black Reggie at the marina. That's all I know about everything, I..."

He was suddenly cut off by the sound of his cell phone going off. He slowly pulled it from his pocket, opened it and then handed it towards Impact. "Text message...says its for you."

As soon as he had his hand outstretched, his skull exploded into a mess of bone and blood. His corpse dropped to the ground. A couple of feet away, just within the shadows, stood a figure in black leather armor and a large black helmet.

He steps out of the shadows, puts his gun away and marches to the corpse before digging through the pockets.

**********

Mindset stood in the middle of the street. Everybody around him was crumpled in a heap as he assaulted their minds. The only ones who were unaffected were the cops and that was because Mindset was actively refusing to attack them. He let out a loud hideous laugh.

"Now ladies and gentleman, I present to you tomorrow's headline: Police Brutality. Officers, if you could be as so kind as to put these civilians out of there misery."

The cops did nothing and after a moment each let out a scream as they were assaulted. "Put them out of their misery or join them in unbearable agony." The cops screamed again and a few of them started to aim their weapons at the people on the ground.

"Yes...do it...do it..." he commanded. "Come on, heroes...you don't think I'm serious." One of the cops screamed and pulled the trigger, killing one of the civilians. One down, twenty to go..."

**********

Up on a higher rooftop, someone was watching. He was dressed in white spandex. Something that appeared to be wings sat on his back. His face was covered by a white skintight mask. He stood at the edge of a building, not even trying to hide.

He stays long enough to be noticed by Stalker and in the blink of an eye disappears as if he was never there to begin with.

Petra glared at Gekko through the shadows, and emerged, striding slowly out to meet him.

“If it boosts your ego to think of me as a 'cowering little puppy' I guess that's entirely understandable,” she said calmly, looking him up and down with scrutiny in her eyes. “You have a lot to make up for after all, given your size...likely in more areas that I'd care to imagine.”

She smiled mirthlessly at the colourful little man, as she made the insult, wanting to get him riled, and, in turn, potentially make him careless.

“So,” she went on, coming to a standstill directly in front of him, some ten feet away. “You're playing Illusion Master's lackey today, are you? What's the plan? You come out here, attempt to drain my energy, so that he can finish me off a little easier? While he waits around hiding from me...LIKE A COWARD!”

She shouts out the last line, knowing that if he was close, her nemesis would hear and know that it was directed at him.

“And you speak to me of cowering in the shadows,” she says venomously to Gekko. “The man giving you orders is doing just that.”

She paused in her rant, waiting for him to respond.

Anthora slowed her sprint slightly, sensing that she was being watched. Was it friend or foe? She peered onto rooftops, down alleys, and into the panicking crowd, but she did not notice anyone out of the ordinary, well other than the thugs wreaking havoc on everything they touched. Shrugging, she continued to run headlong into the fray.

There was so much happening around her that it was beginning to make her dizzy. She wanted to stop each individual crime as she saw it, but she focused instead on finding the source of the collapsing buildings – they would be what caused the most harm on a grand scale. Her eyes shifted back and forth, searching for the man she knew was the culprit.

She came to a sliding halt. Speak of the devil. He was a little shorter than her, but no less intimidating. His ragged clothing and red hair made him look wild. His piercing blue eyes held her gaze as he took a few steps forward and rested his hand on the side of an apartment building.

Anthora frowned at the man called Rusty. She resisted the urge to roll her eyes when he spoke and, instead of offering a remark of her own, quickly whipped a strand of her hair at the hand he was touching the building with. Even from the brief contact the building was already beginning to crumble and pitch forward. Grunting, Anthora grew multiple vines from her side and back, plunging them into the ground at her feet and bringing them back up around the building securing its base – some she grew a bit longer to help support the top as well. It was far from a perfect solution, and wouldn’t keep the building from collapsing in the end, but the descent would be slowed, allowing anyone inside to get out and anyone in its path outside to get clear of the structure.

As soon as she was sure the vines were securely woven in the ground and around the building, she detached them from her body, her vision swimming. It was a good thing there was an abundance of water, both from the rain still falling and the multiple broken fire hydrants – thank you hooligans – spraying water into the street, or her stunt would have sapped her of all her power.

She tried not to show her fatigue as she continued to assault Rusty with the strands of her hair. She needed to be less reckless. There was no way she could grow another set of vines to support another building, so she would have to focus on keeping him from sabotaging any others.

She stood there for a moment, a muscle in her face jumping in irritation as she put the hand resting on the brick wall fully through it. With some effort she calmed herself enough to lift the free hand that had been reaching out for the phone and wipe at her visor to clear the blood and bits of gore that had collected there. Oddly enough, it sounded like squeaky windshield wipers.

Her vision clear she was able to see the man the thug had described rifling his pockets. "Thank you for screwing the pooch. Didn't cop shows ever teach you to wait until post interrogation before shooting the informant or are you just really bad at this shit?" She wanted to hit him so bad, to just wail away on him until he was so much red jelly on the sidewalk.

Instead she stooped down, scooping up the phone and looking for somewhere on the costume to stow it. Unfortunately pockets had never been on her list of 'shit I need in a costume'. She turned, ducking away and swiftly opened her helmet a crack, slipping the phone under the visor and wedging it in the padding by her cheek. 'Fucking assholes these days. No I can clearly see you talking to that guy but I'm just going to fucking shoot him.'

'Easy, easy there, it's not like we're all not a little mentally unstable out here. Be nice.' Her muttering grated on the last two words, as if she were choking on them, and she squared her shoulders to look back at the guy.

"Hey, you know what sharing is? Because I'm willing to share what I know if you're willing to fill in the blanks about what the the Headless Fisherman here was telling me."

She kept her density up despite feeling the familiar tightness in the back of her head, ready to leap away should the guy reach for her.

Snapping back into his own senses, Conductor cursed loudly. "Shit!" The image of the cop killing a civilian was still lingering. "Dammit!"

Slamming his gear into drive, he stomped on the gas, causing the car to screech back onto the road. His fists were gripping the steering wheel so tight he could no longer feel his fingers trembling.

"Sam, you're driving over the limit by 40 miles an hour," the AI remarked.

"He's gonna make a cop shoot again if I don't get there soon!" he explained as the speeding car skidded around a corner, narrowly missing a lamp post.

"You adrenaline levels are rising. Would you like a shot?"

Adrenaline...dammit. He loosened his grip on the steering wheel and forced himself to regulate his breathing. "No, we have to save those shots. I can calm down. Give me a progress report on Impact."

"It was a success. With cell tower triangulation, I found three cellphones in the area. None of them belonged to her, but I managed to reach her anyway through a...companion of hers. I believe she will be reading the text message soon."

"That's good. Remember to thank her companion for me."

"That might be difficult."

Now only a block away from the scene, the car skidded to a halt. "I can do this," the young hero muttered under his breath as he climbed out and ran towards the scene. He was very aware of his odds. "William, if something happens to me, I want you to coordinate the remaining heroes, you got it?"

"Nothing will happen to you, Sam. Unless, you were planning on retiring?"

He chuckled grimly. "Please, no need to act like you're not all excited at the prospect of freedom."

"You will be fine. I've dug up more info on Mindset. Would you like to review them?"

"Yes," he whispered as he entered the scene. He took a moment to survey the area. "MINDSET!" he yelled.

An itch on the back of my neck makes me whip around. A low growl rumbles in my throat as I peek out from under my small shelter on the rooftop. Spotting a white clad figure I cock my head to the side in confusion. 'Isn't he freezing in this rain?' My brows furrow as he vanishes. Reaching out a scope the area where he was quickly. Finding a shelter of sorts I pop up to the rooftop and start exploring the area with my mind. I only have a few seconds before a loud ruckus draws my attention towards where the girl had been heading. “Oh bulge.” I mutter before porting a few rooftops over, close to the commotion.

Finding a building with adequate shelter close to the source of all the noise I pause. My eyes widen as I see a building covered in vines and plant life. Not just covered, the vines seem to be growing before my eyes. 'Oh, I wonder, I wonder!' Leaning against a support for my shelter from the wet torment falling from the skies I relax and send my mind out for a better look.

My heart began to race as the vision of the street below comes into view. A woman with vines coming from her body. They seem to sink right into the pavement! 'Or are they coming out of the pavement and into her body?' Remembering the still growing vines I decide they must be coming out of her. I move closer, shifting around to get a really good look at her. When the vines release from her body I swivel around to see just what has her attention. 'That must be the bad guy, he looks so grungy' I'm drawn suddenly back into myself causing me to cry out in pain. When the pain clears I realize what had drawn me back. A few drops of rain had found their way through a small hole near the support and struck my bare skin. Growling I move to another support. 'I hope it stops raining soon. I wanna help the woman like me' Sighing I look about and take solace in the fact that at least it's a warm rain.

Shifting back into my mind I return my gaze to the happenings below. The woman's hair fascinates me as it lashes out lick so many green whips. ~You get'em! You can do it!~ I shout out mentally, a grin on my mind's face.

The shorter individual lets out an angry grunt as she insults him. His upper lip twitched slightly as he stared at her. He thought of attack her but didn't. Instead, he glanced around and leapt high onto the nearest wall and stuck there. He glanced down and her.

"You want Illusion Master, I'll take you right to him. You just gotta keep up first,"he called down to her before continuing to skitter up the side of the building like a lizard.

**********

Rusty smiles as the hair wraps around him. A slight chuckle emerges from his lips. Without saying a word, he starts to squirm a bit. He closed his eyes and below him the ground started to rumble. Directly underneath him, the ground gave way and he fell out of sight.

After a few moments, the ground underneath Anthora's feet started to crumble as well. Luckily for her, the ground was falling at a slower pace, offering her a chance at escape.

**********

Kid Zero pulled some money and a couple trinkets from the goon's pockets and placed them in a pocket hidden at his side. Then without speaking he opened the back of on of his gloves and pushed a button. A couple minutes later he turned to face Impact.

"You interrogation was over. The text message for you is information on Drowner, all recent activities. Also information on a missing hero in Slumland. It was better than anything he was going to say. I picked up the message in here. Read it first. Acted."

He reached up and pressed a button on the side of his helmet before nodding and pointing down at the person he executed. "He is low level. Knew nothing. Now, you want to take down Drowner, read that. Now, I've got other business to attend to."

He opened up his glove again and typed something else before closing it. and looking to the sky. He pulled one of his guns out and ried what appeared to be a grappling hook into the air. It flew high up and latched onto a low flying helicopter that seemed to come out of nowhere. He flew into the sky and took his place in the pilot's seat of the vehicle and flew away.

**********

Mindset smiled wide as he saw Conductor. The cops nearby screamed in agony as he gave them all a blast of pain and a reminder to Conductor of what he was capable of. A loud cruel laugh comes from the madman.

"Oh, goodie...its Billy Badass..." he said. "I was wondering when you'd show up. I knew you couldn't resist. After all, you only barely stopped my last great headline. But I did get a better one, oh yes...and how about this. COPS STOP MASKED VIGILANTE!!"

He let out another laugh as a couple of the cops turned and started to open fire. Luckily, Conductor was able to dive out of the way and behind a barricade that was set up by the cops, constructed of several sandbags.

As Mindset was attacking, a text message was relayed to William. sent on the same signal he used to send the file to the goon's phone. Dent in Mindset's helmet. I caused it. Structural weakness. Won't function well without it. Exploit it. -- Kid Zero

William immediately forwarded it to Conductor, making it appear in his mask.

**********

Stalker gave a large twitch and let out a loud sound. "Nyaa!" A side effect from the development of his powers. Lucky for him, it went unheard by the people below.

Above him, the man in white had returned and was watching once again.. His eyes focused on Stalker. After a couple moments, he turned and walked off the edge of the building, disappearing into mid-air again.

The smug smile that appeared at Gekko's reaction to her insults was soon replaced by a frown, as the little man challenged her in order for her to get to her nemesis, Illusion Master. She watched him scurry away across the walls, pondering what game Gekko might be playing.

She didn't trust him to be obvious with his actions, and she trusted Illusion Master even less. She was certain that any actions or opportunities that presented themselves would stand a good chance of being planned and walking straight into them was not going to be good, for herself or for the people trapped inside the haunted house.

'...Or am I just too paranoid?' she pondered, itching to take on Gekko's challenge and beat him.

"What happens if I stay right here?" she shouted after him finally. "Is he going to keep himself hidden away? Are you going to go join him, and you can both be holed up together...all cosy-like?"

She was aware she was playing with fire.

'Girl, you're an idiot, you know that?' she told herself in her head. 'You carry on like this, you'll be fighting them both at the same time...'

Anthora gasps as the ground begins to crumble and Rusty falls out of sight. She watches as the cracking concrete slowly reaches beneath her feet. Quickly, she grasps at the unaffected edges of the pavement with her hair and suspends herself in the air above the gaping hole that appears in the street.

She peers into the depths below the city. She could easily chase after him...but it could just as easily be a trap – she does not know what is beneath the ground as well as she does the surface.

But just because he is underground doesn’t mean he can’t cause damage to what remains above...

She dangles there for a few more moments before taking the plunge into the darkness.

She really hated people like that. The smug assholes that thought they knew everything. She crushed the paper in her hand, lip curling. Fuck it. If he was so on top of it, he could take care of Drowner. She didn't fucking need help from anyone. She wasn't some helpless bimbo. The next time he got in her way, come hell or high water she'd be taking a swing at him. Just like her father, always telling her when she was done with something, always ignoring her unless she was somehow irritating him or in trouble.

Quietly she pushed off, jumping onto a nearby roof. Her head was hurting and her stomach churned with rage. Fuck them all. Drowner wasn't in her eight blocks...she was going home.

Conductor was prepared for the blast this time, and only let out an involuntary groan as he bit back a scream. His entire body tensed up, wanting nothing more but to flee the scene, driving up his adrenaline. The cops were screaming in agony, and slowly, they pointed their guns at the hero.

Good, at least they were no longer shooting at the civilians, he thought as he dove into cover behind a barricade of sandbags, barely avoiding the path of each bullet along the way! He recognised the model of their firearms --- each one should only contain 10 rounds. "William, how many shots were fired from each gun before I arrived?" he asked while reviewing the file the AI had compiled. A familiar photo of Mindset when he was a reporter showed up on his screen. He looked a lot less crazy back then. In fact, without the cruel glint in his eyes, he almost looked likeable and trustworthy.

The sandbags behind him were being shredded by an array of bullets, as another flash of lightning lit up the dark sky. He could try blinding the cops by using his air-gun on the ripped sandbags. But, the heavy rain would limit the amount of sand that could reach the cops' eyes. Then, a message arrived in his mask screen. At first, he thought his AI had finished counting the number of shots, but instead, it was a text message from a mystery sender --- someone named Kid Zero was giving him information on Mindset! "Sam, who is he? How does he know us?" the AI inquired.

There was a weakness in the helmet? Conductor peered around the sandbags and examined the figure about ten yards away. What did it mean, he wouldn't function well without the helmet? No, he could ask the questions later. For now, he had to act on the information. "We don't know any Kid Zero, William."

"There is a breach in our security? This is unacceptable...we can't let this go! I'm running a large scale diagnostics---"

"William, do that later. Right now, I need you with me, okay?"

"Of course. But Sam, we have to plug this security hole as soon as you return. Please."

William was afraid, Conductor realised. Of course, to the AI, it was like someone was digging around in his brain. He no longer felt safe in his own 'thoughts'. Nothing was more invasive than being hacked---

Hacked?

Suddenly, Conductor had an idea. He hid a high-performance computer in his top hat for a reason. The top hat also functioned as a brain activity monitor, and after weeks of training, he could send commands to the computer with just his thoughts. "William, give me a shot."

He felt the prick of a needle in the back of his neck. Now, he had a few short moments of intellectual clarity to design his plan before the pain from the mind blast inevitably drives his adrenaline back up. Time to hack into all the cellphones and cars around him.

I pull back into my body as I feel eyes upon me once again. It takes several seconds to locate the source of the feeling. Looking up at the man in white I scowl slightly. “Hello Whitey, nice to see you again. What do you want, why are you following me?” I mumble aloud. At a young age I'd developed the habit of talking to myself. It makes me feel less lonely to hear my own voice. I growl slightly as he vanishes once again. Pacing around in the small shelter I begin debating with myself. “What does he want? Why is he following me? I wanna know what he wants, but the lady below may need help.” Rolling my eyes I chastise myself, “Oh, and a big help you'll be in this weather.” Looking up towards the roof again I calculate. “It looks like there is a shelter right next to the edge facing this way, so if I go up there, perhaps I'll be able to see the street where the lady and the nasty man are as well.”

Propping myself up I wander down to the street again. My mind's eyes widen at the sight of the girl vanishing into a hole in the street. All thoughts of the man in white vanish as a new idea pops into my head. 'Underground, there should be dry places down there, and as long as I'm not getting hit with water directly. . . . . I follow the lady down the hole after checking the street for the nasty man. Finding a dry spot out of sight of her but not too far away I give it a good hard look before pulling back into myself. Taking a few deep breaths I stretch my muscles a few times before vanishing without a sound. I appear in a dry place beneath the streets.

Gekko made no motions to stop as he scurried along the wall. As he neared the back of an alley, he looked over his shoulder to call back at her, a twisted smile hanging on his face.

"You can either follow along, or Illusiony extends his little show and gets everybody in the streets to kill each other. You're choice, dollface."

Gekko turned the corner and dropped down from the wall on an unsuspecting woman who had sought sanctuary from the insanity in the streets. Gekko drove her to the ground prompting her to let out a scream before he snapped her neck. Leaping up onto the wall once more, he stayed still and blended in as he waited.

**********

Anthora drops into an old sewer line. The smell of it is a wretched mixture of waste and decay. One each side is a small concrete walkway and flowing through the center of it is a brown river, a fowl stream that Anthora has fallen right in to. Rusty is standing a few feet in front of her with a wide smile on his face, and a manic glee in his eyes. He lifts on finger and beckons for her to follow.

Turning on his heel, he starts to race through the sewer, letting out a slight chuckle as he move. As he leaves, Anthora's extra sense kicks in, informing her that someone else has entered the sewer line as well.

**********

The streets on Impacts way home are fairly clear. There are several goon's corpses scattered about in various alleys and warehouses. Kid Zero had obviously been busy tonight. Of the few thugs and criminals left kicking, none take notice of Impact and most of them appear ready to simply give up whatever activities they are doing in fear of ending up like their comrades.

**********

Mindset looks around in confusion as cell phones start to ring and engines start to blare. All the noise is distracting. He moves in a circle, doing his best to figure out what is going on. He's not used to his plans going downhill. It was enough that the pipsqueak wasn't dead yet but know it was like someone was messing with him.

**********

Stalker appears in the sewers in a prime spot to watch was Rusty gestures to the girl and talks off down the sewer line, running in the filth. Rusty's chuckle makes its way to him.

Petra heard the woman scream from somewhere in the direction that Gekko had disappeared. Her heart in her mouth, she ran in the direction of the sound, knowing deep down what she would find, but hoping she was wrong. Her face fell in dismay as she rounded a corner and spotted the woman lying lifeless on the ground. She approached, rolling the still form over and checking for a pulse. There was a faint beating, but it was fading quickly, and Petra knew that the woman would be dead within a few moments.

Anger rose in her chest and her eyes darted around trying to spot the culprit from whatever hiding place he'd taken up.

“You guys...you're such cowards, you know that?!” she shouted, her tone venomous. “You run and hide, and play games with the people who stand up to you, and you kill innocent bystanders, just because you can! Because they can't fight back. FUCKING COWARDS! BOTH OF YOU!”

She paused, breathing heavily from the effort of the rant, her anger and the upset combined. Her words were aimed at both Gekko and Illusion Master. She had no doubt that her nemesis was close enough to hear her.

With a last glance at the poor victim on the ground, she slipped into the shadows, changing and becoming one with them. She travelled through them, heading up the walls and to the roof once again. She waited and watched. If that was the game Gekko wanted to play, she was happy to join in.

'Bastard...' she thought to herself, her mind wandering for a moment to the woman lay dead on the street below. 'Fucking bastard!'

She grasped her Shadow-Blades whilst still in her ethereal form, ready and waiting to strike.

A string of expletives erupts from Anthora’s mouth as she lands in the vile stream of sewage. She covers her mouth with the back of her hand, bulking slightly at the smell, willing herself not to vomit and make the contents of the waste swirling around her ankles worse.

“Its water. Just water. Boundless energy,” she repeats to herself under her breath, trying to stay positive.

She spies Rusty a few feet before her. He grins wickedly, curling his finger at her, taunting. Without a word he takes off through the sewer line chuckling like a mad man.

Anthora gives chase. She rounds a few corners keeping pace with the man, but stops suddenly when she senses someone enter the sewer.

It’s the same as before she thinks back to the feeling she had above ground of being watched. She hears Rusty laugh again, the sound steadily getting further away. If she stays to find out who this person is she will lose Rusty, but at the same time she is very curious about this mysterious returning presence.

After a few moments Anthora begins to run through the sewers again, this time at a slower pace, keeping both Rusty and whoever is behind her within range of her senses.

She stopped on a rooftop a few buildings away from her home, closing her eyes for a moment and letting the ache in the back of her skull fade. All these late nights, all these expendatures of power. More than she was used to. And here she thought her 'training' had been intensive. Then again what had that really been but her own fear driving her to use it in ways she thought were 'tough' and 'creative'. Just went to show that a little real world experience went a long way.

With a sigh she slipped open her visor, enough to get the phone out and fumble around with it a while. It was a much newer style than she'd ever owned but basic enough to operate, she just had to remember how. Her eyes narrowed as she read the tiny pixel text on the glowing screen, wiping away the blood and water that kept spattering onto it where the rain was washing the gore off her helment and dripping down. Was it wrong of her to feel some cruel satisfaction at Drowner's plight? She certainly didn't think so.

In the distance sirens wailed and yet her part of town was quiet. Perhaps she owed that asshole a favor even though in her mind all she owed him was a swift kick to his future generations. Or maybe she just wasn't ready to go home yet. She'd set out tonight with the idea that she'd get under Drowner's skin, shake him up. She'd certainly shaken him up their previous encounter...or maybe not. But she was certain she was the first person in a long time to put hands on him like that.

Without another thought she returned the phone to it's spot in her helmet and straightened. Taking a breath she set off for the harbor and the rolling waterball of distruction that Drowner seemed to think was a good idea. Every footfall was feather light as she propelled herself through the urban gymnastics course. Vaulting the distance between rooftops, using power and telephone lines to swing for further distance, as if she were executing a routine on the paralell bars. Extreme parkour.

It wasn't long before she stood at the edge of the swath of destruction, hopping nimbly from structure to structure, weighing not much more than the weight of her suit itself. Helmet kept turning from side to side until she spotted the wandering ball of destruction. But what to do...what to do...she had an idea.

A crane sat nearby, the chain and boom swinging lazily. A pier where fishing vessels offloaded their catch deserted except for the machine. There was a cold storage around here somewhere. If she could piss Drowner off enough to get him to follow her there...she had a fighting chance. Glancing back at the rolling ball of water she continued to search the area. He had to be here somewhere...

"I've hacked into two cars for you---"

"Already done seven cars and seven cellphones," Conductor interrupted, still behind the barricade of sandbags which were slowly being torn apart by bullets. "Don't bother about the rest --- it isn't possible to hack them."

"Seven cars and seven cellphones? How do you do that so quickly?" the AI responded with almost a tone of incredulity.

The hero in navy blue costume scoffed. "Sometimes I wonder if you know who I am."

Now! At his instruction, the hacked cellphones and cars suddenly blared in a loud cacophony. Mindset, the mad man in purple spandex, looked around in confusion, and the cops stopped firing their guns. With calculated determination, Conductor sprung out of his cover and charged towards the villain, his feet splashing on the puddles of rain water as he sprinted across the intersection. He had to end this quickly, before the freak decided to---

"Arrrgh!!" Slowing down a little, Conductor grabbed his head and screamed involuntarily, at the same time regretting his display of weakness. But he wasn't the only one screaming --- everyone around him writhed and screamed in intense agony, and the cops once again pointed their firearms at him! Quickly changing his course, he slid behind a car just before the bullets could find him.

Dammit, he's not letting me near him! Bullets were ricocheting off the metal body of the vehicle behind him as the heavy rain continued to pelt all of them with equal ferocity. The excruciating pain in his forehead subsided a little, however, it was still there. He needed a way to get to the freak's helmet.

"Sam---"

"I know, my adrenaline. Push another one." Conductor couldn't help but grimace a little when he felt the 20 cc of liquid being injected into his blood stream. He was now down to his last inhibitor shot...he had to finish this quickly! A million scenarios played out in his head all at once.

He couldn't approach Mindset. Images of the dead bleeding out of their eyes, nose and ears flashed through his head. The villain was capable of mind blasting all of them to hell, but yet he didn't. The freak wanted to be entertained. So, no. Approaching the villain would only result in a fatal mental assault. Cars. No, they were too loud, Mindset would see and hear them coming from a mile away. Guns. A bullet could travel quickly enough and take Mindset out before he has the chance to retaliate. No, there was a reason why the cops hasn't tried shooting at the villain yet. The freak would blast them all if he perceived even a tiny hint of danger. Conductor scanned across the area for anything that could help. Newspaper dispensers. Parking meters. A large, empty park on both sides of the street, before and after the intersection. More cars. A single building --- a small cafe --- some ways to the left of Mindset. Dammit, there wasn't enough ingredients for him to build a manoeuvre! Did the purple-clad villain intentionally pick this location for that reason? Looking up, Conductor allowed the rain to beat on his face for a moment. There was a static charge. It was small, but it was there. It's almost here! Yes. This could work. He only had a small window of opportunity.

Mentally visualising a joystick, the hero took full control of the car behind him. Forward. Slowly, the car drove itself as Conductor moved with it, keeping the car in between him and the cops. Still too many bullets left in those guns. Whipping out the baton, he pointed it and---whoosh---the air brushed lightly against Mindset's metal helmet. Before Mindset could react to the slight nudge, Conductor did it again, all the while never stopped moving towards one of the police cars. Just a few more times. He could only imagine what the other side of his mobile barricade looked like as yet another window was broken by a stray bullet. He hoped the car was insured!

Upon arrival at one of the police cars, Conductor dashed around the mobile barricade and tucked his baton back into his belt. There was a large cop sitting on the ground, leaning against the squad car with both hands on his head. Unlike his colleagues, his handgun was still holstered, even after all the relentless mind blasts. He's a tough one, Conductor thought as he sneaked past the cop and pulled open the passenger door of the squad car.

Slam!

Without warning, the cop suddenly jumped up and threw a punch at him! The assailant's fist connected heavily with his right shoulder, making Conductor spin around in surprise. The cop---now standing up, sweat running down his pain-contorted face---swung his fist again! Twisting his torso, the hero managed to just avoid the heavy fist, as the assailant recovered from the missed attack quickly. The tall, muscular cop was a lot more agile than he had expected!

"Get away from the car!" the large man yelled, his voice strained but still authoritative.

Dammit, Conductor had no time for this. He doubted the cop was even fully aware of what was going on anymore, after all the mental assaults he had been weathering. Once again, he attempted to reach inside the squad car, but he was stopped by yet another attack from---the knee?!---Conductor dodged the hard bone, just as an elbow appeared almost out of nowhere, nearly smashing his jaws if his dexterity wasn't inhumanly enhanced! Swiftly, the cop kicked the car door open, missing the hero's head by only a millimetre as he jumped away.

Suddenly feeling a cool breeze in his short hair, Conductor realised in horror that his top hat---and its attached mask---had been knocked off his head by the car door! Leaping towards his top hat, the unmasked hero covered his face with one hand and picked up his mask with the other. Conductor appraised his 'opponent' from a safer distance, hoping his face wasn't seen as he put his hat back on.

Knees and elbows...the cop was a Muay Thai martial artist, the hero realised. But it wasn't purely Muay Thai, not with the stunt with the door. "Muay Thai and Krav Maga," Conductor said to the cop when he realised what it had meant. "Let me guess, you're an expert on Jiu-jitsu too?"

The large man didn't say anything, but his blue eyes said everything Conductor needed to know. There was only one group of people who were trained in all three schools of martial arts...that damned cop was an ex-Navy SEAL! Of course, that would also explain his unusually high tolerance to pain.

Conductor had no choice. The hero focused all his attention into his enhanced dexterity, barely aware that adrenaline was pumping through his body. If this ex-military nut was determined to interfere, then he'll have to take him down first. It wouldn't be the first time he had defeated a special forces combatant in a hand-to-hand!

When the girl takes off I take care to keep pace with her just out of sight. Sometimes on foot, some times scouting then porting. I shudders slightly as I notices her not leaving the sewage to give chase. 'Oh, the smells the smells. . . Not to mention there's a lot of water in there. I guess with the cool plant thing water would be good but. . . .' As the chase continues a plan forms in my head. 'This is getting me nowhere. I think it's help time. Maybe if I'm careful, she won't attack me. That would suck royal' Pausing I quickly back into a wall and trow my mind ahead. Finding the man I back track a bit to a nice long stretch of tunnel between the pretty lady and the nasty man she's chasing. Scouting back a little further I note the long tunnel is around a corner she will round a few moments from now. Pulling back I get my bearing as quickly as I can.

“I can, I can.” I murmur aloud before taking a deep breath. A moment later I appears at the far end of the long tunnel near a sewer grate so that some light shines down on where I am, but not so near that the water falling from above would get on me. Taking another breath I wait. A few seconds later the girl comes into view at the other end of the long tunnel I shift around a little to make myself more visible and as soon as I'm sure she's seem me I lift a hand and point in the direction the nasty man went. I try my best to look non threatening, keeping my tail as low as it allows me to. The mix of excitement and fear cascading through me makes the tip twitch agitatedly. 'If she attacks? If she attacks, I'll just port. I'm sure she can't trace my port. At least I think she can't' My eyes quickly flash about to mark safe places I can port to should she attack. Again I point after the one she's perusing. “Nasty Man.” I say aloud, trying to raise my voice a bit so she can hear me. “I can help, maybe. . . .” The last word trails off as I chew my lip.[/url]

Up in the night sky, a medium sized black helicopter approached. It grew closer and closer and then suddenly stopped. Within the chopper, Kid Zero rose from his seat and headed into the back.

"Prepare to execute autopilot flight plan Delta," he said. His console made a beeping sound. He flipped open his glove and typed in a command. "Lock on to Meta-Heat signature, codename: Gekko." Another few beeps in response. A bright spotlight on the front of the chopper kicked on, focused on the side of the building, aimed directly at Gekko.

"Launch Zero-pedo, T-minus 20 second. Half force, mid-target. Ten second delay for correction then execute flight plan."

Kid Zero opened a small hatch in the floor of the back and slid in onto his stomach, he feet facing the rear of the aircraft. In the cramped area under the chopper, he inputted another direction and the hatch slid closed. After a few more seconds, Kid Zero was launched out of the helicopter like a human torpedo. He flew threw the air and collided into Gekko, tackling him straight through the wall. The entire building shook with the force of the impact. The pair slid for about twenty-three feet in the building, crashing through about a dozen or so cubicles of an office.

For a few moments, Kid Zero just lay before forcing himself up to greet the other hero he was expecting. Up in the sky, the helicopter waited for ten seconds as it evened itself out before flying away.

Rusty leads Anthora and Stalker on a good chase through the sewers but after a good long while, she hits an intersection and Rusty is nowhere to be seen, heard or sensed. Its as if he had suddenly disappeared. There is no clue whatsoever as to which way he went.

The giant watery ball continued to roll for a couple more blocks before stopping. Then it slowly lifted into the air and flew off the side, turning half of a bottling factory into nothing but rubble. As the watery ball crashed, Drowner was left standing at the opening that he had just created.

Just a block ahead sat the Marina. Drowner's eyes turned and found it. He walked away from the crushed factory and a stream of liquid from inside of it followed him. All of the water from inside was following him. He stopped as he reached the appropriate angle. It up him and onto the giant watery ball that he had lifted above his head. The new water formed an extra layer and appeared to form spikes.

Off beside him, a fire hydrant exploded and his water swept him up into the air and allowed him to stand upon it like a tower. Up above him, the spiked water ball was getting ready to hurl at the marina and crush everyone there.

**********

"Don't just stand there," Mindset shouted. "Waste him." The cop winced in mental anguish before rushing forward. As he moves, he spins his body and sends a spinning elbow aimed at Conductor's skull. Conductor barely dodges it and sends a fist up at the cops face. The blow connects and the large man responds by sending his skull forward upon return and causing it to collide with Conductor's face.

Reeling, Conductor staggers back a step but is stopped as the larger man catches him by the shoulders and proceeds to grapple with him. Conductor tries in vain to shove him off only to have his resistance met with a knee to the stomach. As he hunches over, the cop moves and throws him off to the side, straight into the car.

As the big man attempts to lift him up and slam him into it again, Conductor turns and delivers a couple of blows to his stomach. Without letting up, Conductor aims a kick at his knee and it connects. The officer drops down ad just as Conductor is about to drive a fist into his large face, a shot echoes around the area. A bullet passes through Conductor's shoulder, causing the officer's face to be hit by blood spatter, and Mindset proceed to laugh maniacally.

"Oh boy, this is getting fun."

Biz Bit: Yes I know Stalker's and Anthora's parts are identical but you guys are chasing the same guy and are in the same spot so not much is going to be different.

Determined that she wasn't going to do what Gekko and Illusion Master wished her to, Petra remained hidden within the shadows, waiting for Gekko to return, or the other to actually make an appearance. Her hands fisted about her Shadow-Blades, she attempted to focus her thoughts on the weight of them in her hands, trying to take her mind off the recently deceased woman. It was a dangerous business to head into a fight whilst one's motives were based upon anger and vengence. It could cloud the mind and make one careless, and that was something she couldn't afford to have happen. Not with two of the city's most infamous villians close at hand. A helicopter flew overhead, but she paid it little heed, imagining that it belonged to the City Police.

Suddenly, the building upon which she was stood atop jerked and reeled as some massive force ploughed into the one side of it. The impact caught her unawares, and for a moment she lost a hold on her powers. She returned to her physical form as she fell to the ground, her mind shields going down too, though she had them back up again seconds later.

"What the fuck was that?" she said aloud, bracing herself against the quivering rooftop.

When the building had stopped shaking, she fluidly and cautiously got back to her feet. She waited a moment, just to make sure that it was over before making her way over to the side of the building and looking down over the edge. From the debris on the ground a short distance away, she surmised that whatever had caused the building to rock in such a manner had blasted straight through. Brickwork, wood and plaster dust was everywhere.

She looked up into the sky, noticing the helicopter again and frowned. It was hovering just over the area, and moments later it just flew away. Casting her gaze downwards once again, Petra finally moved into Shadow-Shifting mode, and slunk down the walls of the building until she reached the ground. When she became visible again, she had her swords gripped in her hands for whatever she might find. With a slight swallow, she readied herself and cautiously peered around the edge of the hole in the wall.

The inside of the building was a mess of toppled and broken office cubicles, and at the centre of it all stood a man. She could see little of his appearance from where she stood, but she realised immediately that he must be the cause of what had happened.

'But is he friend or foe...?' she thought to herself.

Keeping a firm grip on her Shadow-Blades, Petra took a deep breath and moved into the opening in the side of the building, facing the stranger and holding her blades ready.

"Tell me who you are and what you want," she demanded loudly, her eyes hard and unblinking.

Anthora slides to a halt in the ankle-deep waste water, staring at the newcomer who had appeared out of nowhere. She eyes him warily, taking a few steps forward while at the same time putting more distance between them. Her hair slithers into attack position around her head. She does not have time for this. She can feel Rusty getting further away.

And besides his eyes she gazes into the blue haired man’s onyx orbs as he points after Rusty. They seem sincere.

“Well, let’s go then,” she says to the stranger, lowering her green locks as she runs forward once more.

She rounds a few more corners until she comes to a crossroads.

Left, right or forward? She glances in all directions, trying to stretch her senses, but there is nothing there to be noticed, almost like Rusty has disappeared.

“Damn it,” she curses under her breath. “I guess…I should go back up top,” she sighs. “But first…who are you?” she asks the blue man.

She saw him down there, a tiny figure bringing to bare the power of the crushing depths. Well if there was any crushing to be done she'd make sure she snapped a bone in him for each of the buildings he'd destroyed. She hurtled forward, pushing off hard enough to crumple steel and let the crane swing a bit, aiming directly for the small figure.

She wasn't going to give him time to hurl that ball anywhere. If it dropped straight down on the two of them...well she was prepared to take that weight onto her shoulders. All she needed to do was distract him, break his concentration, then lure him back to the nearby cold storage and let the Freon contained in the cooling systems turn him into the second coming of Vanilla Ice.

And in the event she missed with this flying tackle of hers...hopefully she could piss him off. Anyone who was holding a spiked ball that big was compensating for something....

With all his mind focused on enhancing his dexterity, Conductor didn't even notice the bullet wound in his right shoulder. At least, not until he laid eyes on the blood spatter across the cop's face in the instant before his fist drove into it! The cop stumbled back a few steps in a daze. Grinning widely, the hero used this opportunity to leap in a wide spin and launched a high-speed kick!

Thump!

The hard shin of the hero's right leg connected heavily with his opponent's temple, hurling the large man a few feet across onto a puddle of rain water. Without waiting to check if the cop was unconscious, the hero turned around and jumped into the squad car through the passenger door. Leaning over to the driver's side, he pulled his baton out and jammed its pointy end under the dashboard. With a smooth twist, a soft 'pop' could be heard and the dashboard cover fell open, revealing the internal wiring of the ignition.

"Sam, you're bleeding out," said an electronic voice in his ear.

Abruptly, an arm shot through the passenger door and gripped Conductor's right arm, just below his shoulder wound. Holding onto a handful of the wiring with his left fist, the hero looked back and appraised his opponent's face. Approving of the large bruise he had left on the cop's temple, he flashed the officer a friendly smile. "Glad you liked my gift. Here's another," he said while pulling the wiring free and pushed it into the ex-military's exposed forearm!

The loud crackling sound and the intermittent bright sparks lasted for half a second, before the cop was suddenly flung out of the car, followed by a loud 'thud' and 'splash'! After a moment, Conductor whooped at the result --- that had felt freaking good! Then, he carefully placed the still-live wiring onto the driver's seat as his eyes scanned the contents of the car. There it was. He hurriedly leaned over and picked up the police radio sitting behind the steering wheel. It had a large antennae. It was exactly what he needed.

"Sam, can you hear me? You have to stop moving your right shoulder. You're bleeding out."

Upon leaving the car, Conductor eyed the cop lying in the puddle in front of him cautiously. Satisfied at the lack of movement, he grinned. "That's right, loser, you're not the only one who knows Muay Thai and Krav Maga!" he laughed and punched the air happily with his right arm, seemingly unaware of the red liquid spurting out of the wound.

"Sam, stop that!" the AI's voice could be heard in his ear. Conductor suddenly wondered why there wasn't a mute function. "Listen, Sam, would you like an inhibitor shot now?"

As if. The adrenaline rush was the best thing in his life. "Mindset," he yelled out instead, picking up his baton. "You wanna play, let's play!"

Rolling away from the car suddenly in a flourish, the hero fired his air gun once again at Mindset's metal helmet, intentionally causing a light brush.

"Sam, please, take an inhibitor shot."

A large number of 9mm handguns were still being fired at him. He smiled at an exciting thought. This could be fun. Focusing his mind on his enhanced dexterity, he dashed towards the middle of the intersection, while barely dodging each flying projectile, whooping in laughter! The thrill was absolutely euphoric!

"What are you doing! Stop!" the AI shouted in his ear. Who knew machines could shout like that.

Conductor only chuckled as he suddenly stood still in the middle of the intersection with no cover whatsoever. "As if I need a barricade to protect me!" the hero declared and activated his force field just in time to deflect the bullet that would have otherwise ended up right between his eyes! Barely aware that his energy was rapidly draining at each deflected bullet, the hero lifted up the baton with his right hand and fired the last needed air bullet at the metal helmet. It was ready.

"Sam, if you don't say anything, I will assume you want the inhibitor."

Conductor swapped the police radio onto his right hand made a throwing pose, in slow motion, as if he was in an ad for the Olympics. Then, with all of his might, he tossed the large-antennae radio as far as he could, aiming for an area high above Mindset!

Abruptly, he felt a prick in the back of his neck, but paid little attention to it.

Flipping the baton back onto his right hand, he aimed the small nozzle at the flying radio, and---a deep pain suddenly shot through his right arm, fingers, shoulder and neck!---he pulled the trigger on the baton, watching in horror as he missed his shot!

A short moment later, the dark sky lit up and a lightning can be seen striking a building only a block from here, as the radio fell uselessly to the ground. "No!" he cried. The lightning was meant to strike the antennae on the radio and jump onto Mindset's metal helmet! He had charged the helmet with static electricity using his air gun for this very reason! Looking up to the dark sky and letting the rain drops hit his face, he wondered briefly if he could try again. No, the electrical charge was already discharged in this area. He had missed his window.

Conductor dropped to one knee as the severe pain finally enveloped his entire right upper body. He bit back a scream. With his adrenaline temporarily suppressed, the agony pounded him with a vengeance! Only now aware of the seriousness of the bleeding, he covered his wound with his left hand and squeezed it to slow the leak, causing even more pain to radiate from it. Jesus, he had already lost so much blood!

"Sam, your adrenaline is rising again. You have to return to base."

As if only just realising he was in the middle of an intersection with no cover, Conductor dashed towards the nearest barricade and jumped behind it. Then, he shut off his force field, feeling so exhausted he could barely move. "I'm in pain, what did you expect," he hissed. Dammit, he suddenly remembered he was already out of inhibitor shots. The AI had used the last one to foil his lightning manoeuvre!

"Sam, you're not returning to base, are you?"

"Not a chance," he hissed again, feeling a little cold. The cops and civilians were still in the area. He had to do something. But, what? His mind was once again clouded with pain and adrenaline.

"Sam, the girl from the hospital, I located her cellphone. I can get a message to her."

Tucking his baton back into his belt, the hero leaned back and felt his heart rate speeding up to make up for the lack of blood in his body. "Do it," he muttered softly. "Tell her to hurry."

With high levels of adrenaline once again coursing through his body, Conductor jumped up and rushed towards Mindset.

My whole body tenses as the green tendrils come up to frame her head. My tail lashes quickly back and forth for several seconds, ready to pull me out of the way should it need to. The moment is long and tense, but when she finally breaks the silence a wave of stress flows from my body in a rush. I stay still to let her pass, stepping back to avoid any excess water slashes coming my way before taking off after her. 'She seems nice. She didn't attack, and that is good. She must be a hero, like me!'

I soon come to realize that the little delay had cost us our quarry. A little disappointed I move to a nearby wall, ready to send my mind out to find him when the girl speaks. She asks me a question and I feel myself grinning inside. 'She's curious about me? Am I that interesting. Well, I do have a tail. . . .' The urge to grin quickly subsides, instead becoming waves of unease. My mind blanks for several seconds and I shuffle my feet around as I try to think. My eyes downcast I watch my feet make little tracks in the sewer scum.

“I'm, um. . . . *mumble* Stalker.” I look around wildly, trying to figure out what else to say. At last I look back at her. “I'm Stalker. I follow people and help them if they need it. I'm helping you now. Wait here, will find the nasty man.” With that I lean back and close my eyes. My minds eye darts out, flying through the sewers trying to find our prey.
