Chapter 7.5 - Eldra.

Eldra looked down. She was still in the gown she had been wearing at the coronation. With all the fuss after the attack she hadn’t had time to change yet.

“Meeks!” She looked around. “Meeks! Where are you?” Eldra tapped her foot impatiently as her aide ran up the throne room, puffing all the while.

“Your Majesty?” He said, once he had closed.

“You are terribly out of shape Meeks,” said the Queen mother calmly. “Perhaps I should send you for some training in the army, toughen you up a bit?”

Meeks went white. “M… my lady,” he began.

“Oh belt up Meeks, I wasn’t serious.” Eldra sat down on the seat next to the King’s throne. She didn’t wish to be seen to usurp Byrold’s position just yet. “Has the mage come around yet?”

“He has Mistress,” Meeks consulted a parchment. “He says the attackers tried to teleport the king somewhere. He managed to deflect the spell somewhat.”

“So Byrold still lives?”

The manservant shrugged. “Apparently that is not so easy to discover. Mazel said that when he deflected the spell the king could have been sent anywhere. Into the middle of a mountain, the sea, or even the next room. The wards he placed on Byrold to protect him against scrying now work against the searchers, as they hide him from magical view.”

Eldra sat back and considered this new information. “Curse that incompetent Brone. If he had beaten Byrold in combat…” She sighed. “Ah well, no good turning up to dinner after the meal is eaten. Given that the odds of Byrold landing somewhere safe, and the odds of him surviving to return if he did, I would say we declare him Dead-in-Waiting.”

Meeks looked puzzled. “Your Majesty?”

“Dead-in-Waiting,” repeated Eldra. “I thought you were an expert on royal law Meeks. When a king goes missing, or there is no body, then a period of time is declared, in which should the king return he takes up the crown again as if nothing had happened. However after the period, if the royal person or at least a body, has not been recovered then he is declared dead.”

“How long is this period?”

“At least thirty one days from declaration.” Eldra tapped the arm of her chair. “I will wait two days, in case he has been teleported to a nearby town. If nothing has been heard in two days, then I will declare him Dead-in-Waiting.”

“As you wish my lady,” said Meeks.

“What has been the reaction to all this from the ambassadors?”

“The Gerwainian ambassador was fairly abrupt with me. He all but accused me, or at least you, of orchestrating the mage attack. My spies tell me Field Marshall Locke was trying to stir up the others in an attempt to put us on trial, or some such.”

“Hah!” Eldra laughed. “Those Gerwainians, any excuse to launch an attack. Their motives are so transparent. What of the others?”

“Most are waiting to see what will happen. The Vestrel People’s Council has ‘extended their hand of friendship’ as they call it, to you.”

Eldra rubbed her chin. “The Vestrel are a fairly tough regime, even if they do keep to themselves a fair amount. Still, they have rich resources, and are a force to be reckoned with. A strong ally, should they choose to be. Send a reply thanking them with all the usual diplomatic stuff.”

Meeks nodded. “It’s the Elves I am worried about. Regenal, their ambassador seemed to be agreeing with Marshall Locke rather a lot.”

“Etherial has been unusually active of late. I have had reports of new agreements with Iswyle and even Glormp. What is their game I wonder?”

“Perhaps we should send our own message? Strengthen our border? We don’t have much of a presence along that stretch of land.”

Eldra shook her head. “Not yet. Still, it may be worth speaking to Marshal Ren.”

“I shall mention it when I see him next,” said Meeks.

“What of Mordon?”

“They are taking this surprisingly well, all things considered.”

“Pah, they are still worried about the Gerwain Karak alliance. They are worried they will be attacked, and if they upset us we won’t assist with troops.”

“As you say my lady.”

Eldra sighed. “There are no others to see?” She gestured at the door, where a steady stream of diplomats, aristocracy and various court flunkies had streamed through since the attack.

“No your majesty.”

“Good. I need to change this gown.” She stood up. “Have a light repast sent to my chambers, I will dine there.”

“As you command,” said Meeks. He watched the queen mother stride down the throne room with an odd expression on his face. Then he turned to carry out his assigned tasks.

Just a slight half-chapter here! More of these may be forthcoming as time goes by. This one doesn’t have a DP, but others probably will.

I have ten threads.

And I think we should all be allowed to have as many threads as we want.

Great story chin. If you're the mayor, I, being merely a citizen, will rock the world!

It is borderline I guess. :? I suppose as long as it isn't done too much it is okay. Comments as to why you liked it are more useful to the author!

Oh. And relevent.
