Announcing the first tournament for Arena (what is this?), the game of ever-changing strategy! Gun

Entry is free and there will be a 500 fable first prize Great or Treasured

to the winner and a second prize of 250 fables.

Anyone is welcome to enter Welcome

, whether or not you've played Arena before or know anything about it. You can read the overview or rules anytime, and Chinaren and I will be around to teach them to you and play practice games with you as much as you want.

The exact format of the tournament will depend on how many people sign up, but it will involve building an army with a random set of cards, possibly trading with others to improve it, and then taking your army up against the other players in a set of head to head matches on our prototype gameboard. Duel

Post here if you're interested, and once we know who's in, I'll get things rolling...

The great thing about Arena is that you can create your own cards. So you could create a ninja army or a slug army, even though there aren't cards for them now. Very Happy

The card creation rules are a bit complex, so we may want to go with existing cards for this first tournament, but definitely we'll get to ninja armies and slug armies, if you want them.

We're using the rules currently on the wiki (basic and advanced), which differs from the version some of you played earlier in a few ways:

- There is no longer any concept of "elevation".
- The costs to change terrain are 4, 6, and 8 hexes (instead of 3,5, and 7) to change your own terrain, uncontrolled, and your opponent's. (though we may tweak this again before the tournament, we're still working on that).
- We're using items.

Well, in the real game, you'll be able to make an army of Bobs, or ninjas, or slugs, or ninja slugs, and edit or delete whatever you create. There will also be standard cards that you can use, but can't edit or delete since other people can use them too.

I was thinking that for this first tournament we would just use the standard cards, since that's a bit simpler and people are still getting the hang of the rules. But we'll see. If people are up for the challenge, maybe we can let everybody create one card of their own...
