Well, I'm assuming you're excluding web comics from this...

I'm not a big fan of the medium, simply because it is far too expensive to collect issue by issue. It's fascinating, but it's not financially realistic to me. I've been known to collect the occasional omnibus, though... And I'm a really big fan of anything from Studio Foglio...

If you download a program called cdisplay, you can find digitalized comics for free on various sites.

Comics are simply something that passed me by as a kid. I read books, played computer games, watched cartoons - which I suppose combined gave me the same sort of mixture of story and graphics you'd get from a comic. The idea of comics never appealed and I guess still don't.

I began reading Studio Foglio last night. It was rather entertaining. Thanks for the link, Shille. Smile

I'm personally fascinated by the way comics have progressed over the last 30 years or so. They're rapidly gaining literary merit, and with good reason. I'm thinking of offering a course on the subject someday.

Almost all of the comics/graphic novels I read are online, but no less good for that. Gaiman's Sandman is also a favourite.

My three favourites:

Gunnerkrieg Court
Rice Boy
Lackadaisy

also, Hark, a Vagrant! is awesome.

Hey, no problem, D. And there's two links, there- I hyperlinked each word. Wink They've got four comics running, but those two are the best. Girl Genius is flat-out amazing. There's a reason it keeps getting nominated for Hugo awards. And while Buck Godot gets overlooked, you don't often find humorous sci-fi... and it's complete. Gotta love the whole 'not waiting for the next update' thing.

And there's always Phoenix Requiem- the updates are a bit slower, but Sarah Ellerton does beautiful work.

And I'd have to agree with you, 'zade, Gunnerkrigg Court is fantastic. More web-comic than comic, but that's not always a bad thing. The plot is amazing.

Gunnerkrigg high-five?

...No?

...Since the topic's swung round to accept webcomics, I'd also like to recommend Parallel Dementia. Remind me to get a link later, I am a lazy arse. I might also remember others.

Anyway, unfortunately it's on break for the moment, but I believe it's a pretty cool story. Also, watching the art improvement from the first couple o' pages is always fun.

Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns and Watchmen have been at the top of my list since they came out back in the 80's (I was reading Stephen King at 8, so more adult comics wasn't much of a stretch).

Sandman of course was excellent. Gaiman won a literary award for it (Hugo, I think), and a lot of "legitimate" authors were pissed off about it and tried to have the rules changed so graphic novelists weren't eligible after that. I forget if that succeeded or not.

Sin City. Fables. Preacher is amazing. Horrobi is unparalleled. And yes, I still think X-men are fun sometimes, but Batman's been crap ever since Denny O'Neil left as editor.

But these days I don't read comics anymore. I started feeling like a sucker, waiting for the next installment of stories that by definition would never reach a definitive conclusion. That basically meant I would be paying a rather large sum of money (to support all the comics I read at the time and their related titles) each month for the rest of my life, and why? To never know how it ends. My god that seemed foolish, and I just didn't care enough about the stories to be roped in to that. But they were good times while they lasted.

Because it is bitter
And because it is my heart."  -- Stephen Crane

Ah! You took my sugestion for Fables! =p I torrented the whole collection, and read it on Comical!. The internet is wonderful. <3

But if you're looking for classic comic booking... Marvel, Marvel, Marvel! For the single reason: X-Men. I was in love with X-Men for the longest time... stll am! There's a brand new series out that's only on it's second issue, and it seems good. It's a darker return to a few well known X-Men. It's called X-Factor Forever.

XOXO

Oooh, RUSE!! I remember that one. Other Crossgen comics like Meridian, Route 666 and Scion were equally awesome but got less stage play as Ruse. It's important that you realize almost all Crossgen comics were awesome because just about every writer worked on each others book, they operated differently and more like staff writers as opposed to most comic companies which is like freelance writers in a sense.

As far as unrequited love stories go, I like Ranma 1/2 and I''s, but some people don't like them.

Based on what you like I'd recommend Y: The Last Man, 7 Soldiers of Victory, Ex Machina, Invincible, The Walking Dead, Strangers in Paradise (the second series when it became more complex, but you should start at the beginning), Ultimates (series 1 and 2, not 3), Marvel Civil War and Kick-Ass.

All those series I listed above are worth buying.

Sincerely,
SirWaxaLot

I have actually read Y: The Last Man. I'll have to check out those others, I've heard alot about walking dead, but I've never been into zombie stuff before.

I did throughly enjoy Ruse, it's a shame it ended when it did, although I've heard rumors of a movie.

I've always been a big fan of Deadpool, even before he started going up in the running for the symbol of the Modern Age of Comics. Captain America is alright. If they updated the older stuff, with the patriotic ramblings in tact. Then we would have a comic! Stopped reading Ironman when the movie came out. Green Arrow, always a fav. Stopped being a Batman fan when the newest movies came out.

I love the Asterix comics (Reluctantly, I have to admit that the British English versions are funnier than the American English versions.) I used to be a big fan of The Phantom.
