What is Blood Bowl?
Blood Bowl is the game of fantasy football. Throughout the Olde Worlde and beyond, teams of fearless warriors - known as Blood Bowl players - face each other on ritualised battlefields known as pitches or even just fields. Their aim is to score as many touchdowns as possible in the time allowed. To score a touchdown a player must move an inflated pig's bladder - also known as a 'ball' - into the opposing team's end zone. Of course, the opposing team is also trying to do the same.
The ball can be moved around the field in many ways from being kicked, carried thrown or even held by a thrown player! The opposing team will be trying to gain possession of the ball as well. They can do this by intercepting a ball from a throw, picking up the ball if it has become 'loose' or the far more frequent method of being violent and smacking the ball carrier! Players are prohibited from using weapons during the game. This is because in the original sacred Playbook, the god of Blood Bowl, Nuffle decreed that 'one's own body is the only weapon he needs to play the game'. Over the years this hasn't stopped teams using this admittedly rather loose wording to maximum effect and is the reason why a player's armour is more likely than not covered in sharp protruding spikes with blades and large knuckle-dusters attached to gauntlets. The history of Blood Bowl is littered with the illegal use of weapons and the many devious contraptions bought forward by numerous races - the Dwarfs and Goblins in particular - ranging from monstrous machines such as the Dwarven Death-roller to the no-less-dangerous chainsaw.
A Blood Bowl player, to an extent, needs to be a jack-of-all-trades - as equally quick on the offensive as well as being able to defend. This doesn't mean that there aren't any specialists in the sport, far from it, a Blood Bowl player needs to specialise in one of the many positions if he wishes to rise above the humble lineman. Blitzers are usually the stars of the game combining strength and skill with great speed and flexibility. Throwers pass the ball to awaiting players deep in the enemies half of the field - Elves are very adept at this. And, of course, if you are throwing the ball, it would be nice if there was someone at the other end to catch it, this is where the Catcher comes in! If one side is trying to bash its way through the opposing team's lines, you will often see the latter's Blockers come into action to stop them. And finally, the Linemen perform the rank and file duties on the team - this may be less glamorous than that of a Blitzer but in the grand scheme of team plays and tactics it is no less important.
The Blood Bowl game (that's the game not the actual sport) is played on a grid marked board a lot like a classic board game. As the player of the game (referred to as 'coach' so as not to confuse you with the model players) you choose your team from the team lists provided. To start with, rookie teams are formed using 1,000,000 gold pieces so it will be quite tight, you probably won't be able to buy every positional player for your roster. The game is played out on the game board that represents the field.
All your players will have different Movement, Strength, Agility and Armour ratings, the higher the number the better that player is. D6 rolls are used to test to see if your players can do stuff like picking up and passing the ball dodging away from enemy players and such. Different skills and traits can make this easier by awarding re-rolls or increasing the chances on the dice roll. Hitting other players, or the more technical term of 'Blocking', uses special Blocking dice, the higher the player's Strength, the more Blocking dice he gets to roll. The game itself is divided into two halves of eight turns each. The team with the most touchdowns after the second half is the winner. If the scores are tied a final extra time block of a further eight turns is played.
As you play games with your team your players will gain experience and better skills, and you will get incomes from the gate as fans flock to support your team. This will allow you to buy more players and replace injured and dead ones. Having some money in the treasury is also useful for hiring that freebooter Star Player in an important game, such as a tournament final. _________________ Punishment leads to Fear. Maybe because I was such a good opponent, and managed to score by shucking my teammates more times than you, whilst STILL being crushed to a pulp? Yep, that sounds like it. Don't worry, I've got four and a half sides of detailed notes for the game between chinaren and Solomon Birch. That's right boys and girls, I'm writing one of these (because I asked him nicely if I could)!

due to lack of support i've been forced to rearrange the tournement
it will now be a league, which leaves time for more players to join in soon. the first chapter will be up shortly - this is the first half of the first half* of the match between BWs agres - the Black Mountain Giants - and Shadys Snotlings - the South Downs Anklebiters.
Enjoy.
*Yes, i do mean first half of first half - this is merely a quater of the match _________________ Punishment leads to Fear. Fear leads to Obedience. Obedience leads to Freedom. Therefore, Punishment leads to Freedom.

Good evening and welcome to the first Blood Bowl match of the New ‘IF League’. Tonight looks set to be a brutal game, between the Black Mountain Giants and the South Downs Anklebiters. Join the ranks of blood bowl fans from around the world, all ready and waiting to see this game tonight. As always your match commentator Jim Johnson – we haven’t replaced the big guy yet folks. Evening Jim.
Thank you, Bob! Well good evening folks, and welcome to the match. The teams should be coming out onto the field in just a few minutes now. What’s that? Thunder? No – it’s the ogres of the Black Mountain Giants as they come running out onto the field. And behind them follow the goblins, keeping up with their larger team mates. The Giants are playing tonight in their traditional kit, which for those of you watching in black and white Cabalvision is their black and red kit in which they have down so well in.
Hear that folks? The Giants will be playing tonight in their black and red kit, and here is their manager, Mr. B Widow, also sporting a black and red top. The ogre takes his seat by the side of the pitch along with the reverse goblin Antiman. I’ll see if I can…Wait. What’s that chanting Jim?
That’s the fans of South Downs Anklebiters. The Snotlings are running onto the pitch, followed by the much larger trolls. The fans are belting out the teams song of ‘You’ll Never Walk Again’, which the Giants fans are attempting to counter with ‘There’s Going to be a Fatal Accident.’ The manager of the Anklebiters, an insane night goblin shamaness by the name of Mrs. S. Stoat is on the sidelines. She is also in her team’s kit, the white and yellow stripes clashing with her white fur.
I’m sorry Jim, there must be a trouble with the transmission. It sounded as if you just called Mrs. Stoat hairy.
That’s right Bob. Unlike most night goblins she is covered in white hair from head to foot. It must be those mushrooms all night gobos insist on eating. And there she goes – munching on one of the blue fungi. Sparks shoot up from her staff towards the trolls, goading them forwards onto the pitch. Well we’re almost ready to kick off the match Bob, and the managers are moving towards the centre of the pitch. The crowd has fallen silent, awaiting the arrival of the referee and the coin toss to start the match.
Jim! Jim! I’ve just received word. The referee Vermink Blackpelt – an ex-player for the Skavenblight Scramblers of some regard – has disappeared, taking the officials collective fees for the match. There is no one to start the match, what are the teams up to now Jim, just waiting there?
Have no fears about that Bob, Blood Bowl players – and their managers – are not renowned for their patience. And Mr. Widow is no exception. He has grabbed the ball and tossed it to one of the Snotlings, then advanced on Mrs. Stoat. Seeing her protests ignored, the shamaness turned furry has fled from the gridiron and to her side’s benches.
Well that’s one way to decide it. Seeing the ball in their opponent’s possession the ogres have advanced quickly, taking the snotlings by surprise. The ball carrier has kicked the ball into the air, to land just inside the ogre half. Hang on one moment! There appears to be a commotion on the Giants’ half. What is it Jim?
It looks like - Yes. A dwarven streaker has leapt the barricade at the Giants’ endzone and is running down the pitch. That’s going to be distracting for the players.
Ignoring the man for now the ogres begin by hitting the trolls on the line of scrimmage, pushing the majority back off the line of scrimmage. Lookus takes Yimkus down in a flurry of limbs, both rolling about on the floor. Henree seizes hold of Petera – what was she doing out on the scrimmage line – and it looks like he has ripped off the snotlings head. Yes, a stream of blood has gushed up, and Henree has thrown the head in the crowd. The body of the unfortunate snotling lies trampled in the mud.
Wow, who would have known that snotlings had that much blood in their bodies? It’s enough to make me hungry.
Please try to control yourself Bob, the match has just begun. Over on the right wing Aucaman and Isi both gang up on Mikaere, pushing him towards the crowd while his team mate Tama looks on helpless against the larger greenskins. On the left wing of the field Goylathlay grabs hold of Anaru and carries him towards the waiting crowd, while Citlali holds back Tipene and Hohepa.
Quanah sprints forwards to collect the loose ball behind Henree, but scuffs the grab and knocks it through Henree’s legs and towards Ksayakra, the troll also mistimes his catch and the ball bounces on behind him and into the snotlings half.
In a show of bravado Tipene has thrown himself at Citlali, and taken her down to the floor. It looks like Citlali has smashed her green head violently against the floor – that’s going to hurt in the morning. But while she is obviously ‘fine’ – still moving at least –Tipene appears to be down. And there's a bloody smear spreading from his chest. It looks like a spike has become embedded in the poor creature. Aren’t weapons illegal in this game Bob?
Yes Jim, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t exist. Remember the famous Nobbla Blackroot of the Lowdown Rats and his infamous chainsword?
How could I forget? And with the referee missing from the game it there is no one to prevent their use after all. Back to the game and the plucky Tamati dodges through the gap left by Darehl and collects the ball. He skips to Bemkash’s side, from when the troll grabs the snotling and stands there holding him like a fool. I’m sure that’s not what the coach had in mind. And there she is – holding out her staff and sending sparks flying towards Bemkash as a warning for next time.
Mikaere dodges past Aucaman and behind his team mate Tama, who follows him away from the aforementioned Aucaman and the goblin Isi. The pair stand next to the ball carrier Tamati, guarding him from the bigger greenskins.
Ksayakra hits Darehl, smacking him to the floor. The remaining trolls, Yimkus and Ksanel both stand their ground, blinking stupidly. I can see Mrs. Stoat tearing her hair out in frustration. Anaru dodges around Goylathlay and moves deep into the Ogres half, awaiting a pass no doubt. The streaker is continuing his run towards the ogres, dancing around and showing his…
Jim, there are children present at this game remember. This is meant to be an area where junior can see their first decapitation in a safe environment. Which they have, as Henree earlier obliged us.
Quite. Still unperturbed by the naked dwarf standing close behind him Wayra dashes forwards to slam into Anaru, both hitting the deck, neither appearing harmed though. Isi attempts to wiggle her way through the gap left by Mikaere and Tama to get to the ball carrier, but has her legs taken away from under her by the combined efforts of the pair and hits the ground, knocking her out.
Anaru rolls to his feet and strides forwards over Wayra, stamping on his nether regions as he does so. Bemkash remembers the snotling he’s holding onto, and throws Tamati deep into the ogres half. He lands successfully and runs forwards to slam home a touchdown. Ksanel takes this opportunity to push Goylathlay towards the crowd. And its one-nothing to the Anklebiters.
Now that was unexpected, and went completely against the run of play. I wouldn’t be surprised if that snotling in particular ending up on the receiving end of a fist.
My thoughts exactly Bob. Using such an experimental and unreliable technique. Mrs. Stoat has risen to her feet along with the five snotlings waiting in the reserve bench. Those snotlings look mighty nervous though.
And no wonder Jim. With two of their number already lying face down in the dirt – or rather one, the other haven had his head impaled with a spike by a member of the crowd – they know this means two of them will have to go out next.
The streaker runs back into the crowd and away from the angry ogres, only to be apprehended by the blood bowl officials. As the next drive starts the teams reassemble, the ogres in particular looking especially angry. I wouldn’t like to be a snotlings right now.
Or ever come to think of it Jim.
Quite. Both teams adopt a similar set up to before. The snotlings swarming around the larger trolls, too numerous to count accurately.
It looks to me Jim, as if there’s more than the allowed number on the field. Yes, I can count nine snotlings on the field, which when you include the four trolls is two greater than eleven, the sacred number of Nuffle. It’s despicable; the way coaches use any advantage available to them – fair or foul - in an…Wait – what’s this? It looks like an autograph hunter has worked his way onto the field and is currently pestering the goal-scoring snotling Tamati for his signature.
Snotlings can write?
I don’t know Jim, but just because you lack the ability doesn’t mean that all blood bowl players do. Weren’t any of the players on the Oldheim Ogres literate?
Don’t ask me Bob, I never bothered to ask them. Eat and fight – that was the life. Did I ever tell you about the time that I single handily…
Yes Jim, several times. And it looks like the ogres are ready to play now – yes, they have signalled to Anklebiters to take the kick. Over to you Jim.
Thank you Bob. Yes, here comes the kick now. The ball scatters into the right wide line of the ogres set up. As before the ogres set about with their fists, all of the trolls being pushed away, with Bemkash hitting the floor after a supported effort by Isi. In a repeat of the last drive, Lookus takes Ksanel to the ground with a dive, both of the huge players landing hard.
Citlali pushes Hemi back, and holds Paora down for Goylathlay to head butt. Goylathlay goes down clutching his head, but Paora is bleeding profoundly – she wont be making an appearance here again today.
With an open half to run in, Quanah collects the ball, and throws it accurately towards Wayra. Distracted by the trolls in front of him and the streaker behind Wayra fumbles the catch, the ball scattering behind him.
Hohepa dodges through the ogres around the ball and the goblin guarding it. However Wayra does distract him enough to prevent him from safely collecting it, the ball bouncing loose.
Ignoring the ball loose in the ogre half Wayra smashes his elbows into Mikaere’s midrift, forcing him backwards. The massive Darehl kicks out at Tama, who dodges the massive blow and skips backwards. Danyell punches Ksanel, his fist knocking the troll from his feet. Henree blitzes back into his own half to chase down the cheeky snotling there, but Hohepa moves away from the ogre’s blows. Quanah dodges past Hohepa to collect the ball, but a push from the titchy creature prevents him, the ball scattering loose once more.
Tamati has taken pity on the autograph collector, and, taking time out from the match, has signed his name into the avid collectors book. The crowd roars its approval – they always like it when the players take time out for the fans – and the brave kid scampers from the field. Anaru dives atop of the taller Aucaman, and the pair go down in a flurry of blows. Aucaman bounces from the floor – but they’re going to have to carry Anaru out of here as he won’t be walking for a while.
Ksanel hits Lookus while supported by Yimkus. Together they knock the ogre to the floor. Hemi attempts to dodge past Citlali, but is tripped and knocked out. _________________ Punishment leads to Fear. Fear leads to Obedience. Obedience leads to Freedom. Therefore, Punishment leads to Freedom.

Great game so far - even though my team are dying in horrible ways. They can take it - they're well 'ard! (or well-squishable, anyway)

ok here's the second half of the first half previously published
i finally managed to persuade my brother - that's Araex if you don't know - to start playing again.
and here it is
just a reminder - Bob's words are in italics, Jim's are in bold
Snotling names will be shown in yellow and trolls in red
Goblins will be shown in green while ogres are in blue
oh, and let me mention - I hate colours. You can tell you've been typing to long when you begin to mouth color=blue, while consistantly typing in red by mistake
or when it takes you four go's to spell yellow correctly _________________ Punishment leads to Fear. Fear leads to Obedience. Obedience leads to Freedom. Therefore, Punishment leads to Freedom.

Quanah hits Petera, pushing him away and seriously injuring him – looks like a fractured skull to me. Isi dashes through the gap left and behind Phransis, ducking down to pick up the ball but knocking it onwards.
Bemkash hits Darehl, pushing the ogre backwards. Yimkus hits Danyell with Tama’s support, sending flying her to the ground where her head collides with a large rock, stunning her. Ksanel hits Darehl with Yimkus’s support, knocking him backwards into Quanah, the ogre falling to the ground while the nimble goblin escapes unharmed. Mikaere dashes forwards and together with Hemi’s assistance, stamps on the prone Aucaman, seriously injuring the goblin.
And I believe that’s the first causality for the Anklebiters this match Jim.
You’d be right there Bob. The snotlings should be embarrassed. But back to the field where Timoti and Tama are ganging up on Quanah, knocking him to the floor. It’s not all going their way though, Quanah has stumbled back holding something in his hand – is that what I think it is?
By Lahmia yes it is! Quanah has actually ripped Timoti’s heart right from his chest. It’s so…so…red, and juicy looking I…
Making you hungry huh Bob? Meanwhile Quanah has recovered from his fall and has leapt from the ground, tossing the heart aside. He’s dodged out of the grasping reach of Tana and, yes, he’s collected the ball. With a nifty pass he hands to off to Wayra, but he’s distracted by the sight of blood covering Quanah’s gauntlets and lets the ball slip through his hands, bouncing to land next to Phransis.
I’m not sure what’s up with goblins currently – they can’t seem to make a single catch.
I agree Bob, it’s beginning to look like the snotlings have greased the ball after their touch-down. But with still no ref watching the game there is nothing that can be done. Meanwhile Ksanel is hitting Lookus with Yimkus’s support, pushing the massive beast away. Bemkash has just walloped Henree with support from Tamati. Together the two monsters crash to the floor, both rolling away unharmed.
Lookus has turned to the miniture Tama, and stamps down, flattening the snotling and taking her into the causality box. Quanah goes and collects the ball once more, handing it off to Wayra who has apparently recovered from his hematophobia.
Phransis snatches Wayra from the ground preparing to toss him down the pitch, only to stare blankly at the goblin at the goblin in confusion.
See Jim – it’s like I always tell you – ogres are stupid. No offence intended of course.
None taken Bob – some of your kind haven’t been the most straight forward thinkers either. Goylathlay and Citali dash deep into the snotlings side of the pitch, while Henree climbs to his feet. Danyell also clambers up, and throws a punch at Yimkus, knocking him away. Wayra struggles free on the bone-headed Phransis’s grasp, and takes shelter between Darehl, Phranis and Lookus.
Ksanel stares blankly into the face of Danyell, while Yimkus dodges free from the arms of the female ogre to blitz Goylathlay, taking him down by process of falling on him. They both survive intact however.
Danyell hits Ksanel – probably for drooling on her - with extra support from Darehl, pushing him away. Darehl has just grabbed hold of Wayra, and thrown him into the air.
Sounds like a repeat of the Anklebiter tactics if you ask me Jim.
I quite agree. However the aerodynamic goblin is sailing through the air regardless. And – I don’t believe it – he’s landed neatly on his feet. Wayra dashes forwards, and plants the ball to score the first touchdown for the Giants.
Quite sudden changes in the field of play their Jim. If you’ve just tuned in to us, then listen up. The Anklebiters are playing the Giants in the first match of the IF League, both teams giving it their all. Though taking a serious beating so far, the Anklebiters managed to score a quick touchdown when Tamati was hurled through the air by Bemkask beyond the Giants defensive line to plant a touchdown. And now – in the closing moments of the half the Giants have responded with a similar move, Wayra landing well to score the Giants first. The Anklebiters don’t have much time left now, can they make anything of it?
I doubt they can. Just as the Giants are celebrating their score the barricades in front of the snotling fans are broken down. There are now hordes of snotlings pouring onto the pitch! The green tide is sweeping through the teams – I can’t see what is happening in there though. Can you see better from where you are Bob?
Indeed. The angry snotlings seem to be protesting about the Giants use of the areo-goblinoid, a move they are claiming is patented to the Anklebiters alone.
All’s fair in Blood Bowl Bob, they haven’t got a just argument for it. But – with no ref around – just who is going to stop them?
That’s right. And let us take this moment to thank our sponsors, without whom we wouldn’t be here tonight. The Guild of EVIL folks, a subsidiary of Chinaren Inc. whose work has enabled us to travel all the way here tonight from OW folks. Give them a cheer.
Bob, Bob! The snotlings have been removed – nothing like chaos knights to clear a field for you. And let’s take a look at the causalities. The entire team seems to have taken bumps and bruises, but Darehl is lying face down in the dirt, and I can’t see Isi anywhere.
I see her – she’s been carted off to the dug-outs, looks like she’s out cold. Regardless of that – let’s take a look back at the match so far. Only halfway through, and we’ve seen a massive eight people taken to the causality zone for urgent treatment from the team medics.
I agree Bob. I haven’t seen this much blood and gore since, well, er…just when was your last birthday Bob? Regardless of that – we’ve still seen a good few deaths, including a decapitation and a heart-ripping. We’ve seen aero-dynamic goblinoids and ogres beating the feth out of trolls. But most of all, what we’ve seen here – is Blood Bowl.
Thank you, and join us after the break, where we continue this awe-inspiring match between the Black Mountain Giants and the South Downs Anklebiters _________________ Punishment leads to Fear. Fear leads to Obedience. Obedience leads to Freedom. Therefore, Punishment leads to Freedom.

Hurrah! Finally another 'chapter'. Mind you, does it have a decision point?

If you can call that fantasy violence a 'story'.
Nevertheless, you don't read a Blood Bowl story for a plot. Well, you shouldn't.
And it has plenty of what it really desires; over-the-top violence, copious amounts of orc-cheerleading (yum! ) and ridiculously silly commentating!
Good stuff Lordy, keep it coming!
*holds breath... then realises that he has a correction to point out*
Oh, and as you asked me too look, in my quick skim I noticed:

Changing colors twice a sentence or more has got to be taking you hours!
I like Stoat's coach character and the dwarven distraction, and the eager fan going for a signature. ... Most of the rest of it is going by while my mind spins trying to understand it!
You're taking on a large project valiantly! Good luck with 1.3! _________________ Please visit my Library of completed works.
