Once upon a winter's night there lived a very dim wizard, who had a rather unusual spell. It gave him a very bad cold dragon. In the last few months, he hadn't a single visitor survive. This made for a lonely winter. However, when his dragon decided to breathe fire, it made a rift outside the tower where large colorful devils lived. The unfriendly devils came and attacked the Dragon. But the Wizard had more important business to attend to.

The End.

Thanks, everybody!

I have lots of thoughts on the story, but I'm curious as to what others have to say. How did it work? What did you like/dislike?

I don't have much to say.

I enjoyed it. It seemed short but fun. Towards the end it seemed to be getting more and more random though.

The inability to edit clunky sentences was frustrating, but it was fun and it was a nice activity to get authors together. Dig it!

The randomness is always frustrating with these as they quickly devolve into a 'what quirky sentance can I twist THIS into' competition. I've often wondered what it would take to make such a thing cohesive. Maybe one paragraph at a time...

*nod nod* can we start another one?

and who knows, trying to create a cohesive story out of that one could be seen as a challenge.

Yes, I agree with everything that's been said, especially about the story becoming somewhat off-track and random. I'd like to try it again, and I think if we all keep some principles in mind we can do better in keeping it cohesive. Here are my thoughts on some rules of thumb:

  • Reincorporate: Oddly enough, the main technique in helping a story move forward is to look backward. In improv theater, we use the word "reincorporation" to mean bringing back elements that have been introduced earlier in the story. That's what gives the story structure and meaning, and makes it more than just a series of unconnected events. So whenever you're tempted to introduce some new element or character, think instead about how you might re-introduce an existing element or character.
  • Name the characters: I missed a chance to do that early, so my bad on this one. But the idea is that it's a lot easier to refer back to a character once you've named him, so that promotes reincorporation and also makes the text flow more smoothly. If we'd named our wizard "Max", for example, anyone could have brought him back smoothly with one word, whereas since he wasn't named it took two words and was a little more awkward.
  • Use active words: Use words that advance the story and describe action. Avoid words like "decided", "learn to", "pondered", "really", etc., that just draw things out. And especially avoid "very", which doesn't add anything. Our story was about 200 words, and 4 of the words were "very".
  • Be obvious: Just write the next two words that seem to fit the story the best. Don't try to be clever or unexpected or funny. It's a bit of a paradox, but if everyone tries to be obvious the story goes in funny and unexpected directions by itself, whereas if people try to be clever it ends up falling flat.

I'd like to try a few of these simultaneously in different genres. Anyone have suggestions for genres? Or any other comments before we get started?

I liked the humour the randomness threw up, but I'm not sure it would ever be possible to write anything cohesive at two words a piece, even with the guidelines above.

Three or maybe four words a piece will help give the next person a hint at what you're aiming at, so that they can carry on in the same vein. Plus, with 3 or 4 words it is possible to end a sentence and start a new one, and still give it some direction.

With this one, sometimes the period/full stops were not added, so we got some long, rambling sentences.

I'd like to see a 10 word experiment too... that would be interesting!

For genres... Hmmm. Why not plant one in each of the main forums and see what happens? Very Happy

*nod nod *

2 word, 4 word, 10 words sentence. *shrugs*

I don't really have an opinion on the word limit thing, but i agree that planting one for every genre is a good idea. It would be organized and such :p

Great, I'll start them up! Let's do the two-word versions this round with the guidelines, and see where that goes.
