I don't know about the lot of you, but I LOVE poetry! So I thought I'd start a little skirmish here over poetry!

Rules are simple:

#1 Any style is allowed

#2 Must be at least 15 words long

#3 Must be original

#4 Must be about stated subject

I hope to keep this a running competition. Every week I'll take applicants, just post your poem here, and the next week will be voting! Applicants can vote. After all votes are in, I will announce the winner and award 100 Fables to said winner, as well as post a new subject to write on! You can see past winners here.

This competition's theme will be:

Snow

Good luck to all!

Life

A cruel and twisted torment,
A honey-soaked bliss,
It never lies dormant,
And its plots carry twists.

To her I love and I hate,
I've never been decided,
For she provides and she takes,
On rare occasion, I find myself delighted.

On one hand she's quick,
Yet she drags on so long,
Like swimming through a brick,
Or singing a love song.

I just know that, in the end,
I'll look back and sigh,
Because I'll realize my friend,
I was born to die.

The story of my life(My First Shot at Poetry!)

Born in a land of love and bliss,
living 'rich' among the poor,
Wake up and wait for my morning kiss,
but pleasure seems to disappear,

'cause I see fellow citizens fight,
and that brings me down to tears,
Nothing ever seems to go allright,
and I live in fear

Lived 16 years in my land among a 100 million men,
where a majority can't get their bread, and sleep in the sand,
But the positives are too long to list and write off of my pen,
Always wipes the tears off your face, So I love this land,

Funny thing this life is, can leave you very confused,
I was pushed out of my mother's womb,
And the world really left me amused,
In a century or so, I'm pushed into my own tomb

In some countries the trains
chugg into the station
whether it hails or rains

and in others you'll shove
and tear through throngs
just to get in the car.

I prefer my magic carpet.

It

Starts

Slowly

But

Before

Long it

Begins to

Chug down

The Line

Unabated

Path defined

Gaining speed

And Momentum

Charging Forward

An unstoppable force

A marvel of technology

Locked into its course

Like a Marathon runner

Its on its way, to a destination

To be docked with the next day.

A station to drop its precious load

And gather another for more profits down the road

Though its been outdone in speed and agility, its might is still its capability.

Like a great career, or a budding government, a new relationship, or a hallowed covenant,

The train gains power as it goes, flexing and waxing as it grows, and as time goes on, everyone knows,

Locomotives still steal all the shows. Never will they be outdated, though they've been evolved and technologically updated.

They've captured the fascination of generations, filling the imaginations of millions with miniature landscapes complete with citizens.

When one sees our civilizations as a giant mind, connected by highways and byways in kind, we open our eyes to find, the core of our thoughts are defined, by the locomotive as it charges down the line.

Just for a little kick, I'll post one of my own poems!

Of times past, we write these tales
of heros and villans we remember
with these stories
these writings
we remember forever
these ones who write our histories
these ones who are of Legend

I picked a random subject, but rememebr, this week is 'Fate'

The ties that bind us pull us back
Everything of the present is ready to attack
But the future is a golden bird
Beckoning us, the call we heard
In what is to come we do elate
And this little bird, its name is Fate.

Okay, certainly not one of my best, as my muse is well and truly out-of-it right now. But I thought I'd give it a whirl anyway, all in the name of fun ;). I don't think this really needs a warning, but I'll give one just in case. Ever so slightly dark and sad, but I don't think it's anything major.

Fate's Choice

Drowning his sorrows, in a back-alley bar,
The man, he sups his last, and bids the barkeep goodnight,
Stumbles out the door, into the cold,
And makes for his car, in the dim streetlight,
Lamenting all the while, the loss of his Maria, sweet Maria.

Taking his keys from his pocket, as he leans against the car,
He misses the lock, misses...misses...misses...
Eventually managing the task of unlocking the door,
All the while remembering the sweet kisses,
Of his Maria, beautiful Maria.

"Are you sure you should be doing that?"
A womans voice breaks through the night.
The man he turns, and sees the figure,
Deep in the shadows, near out of sight.

"What business is it of yours", he replies with scorn,
And turns back to unlocking the door.
"Maybe before you make your choice," the woman says,
"You'd like to know what fate has in store?"

Curiousity itching, he turns back towards her,
And finds that she has stepped into the streetlight's dim glow,
Though he's still unable to see her face,
For she is covered, in a hooded cloak, from head to toe.

"Who are you?" the man says warily, to which she replies
"I have been sent to give you a chance before it's too late,
For if you get into that car tonight, my good sir,
You will be making a great mistake. And my name is Fate."

"You have been blessed with an offer, sir,
To discover what fate has in store for you,
To know the outcome of each of your choices,
Before you decide which of them to do."

He ponders a moment, trying to decide,
If he really cares what the outcome might be,
But curiousity overcomes him, and he
Softly replies, "I wish to see."

She takes his hands, and in an instant,
The world around him is gone, then a new scene appears,
Here lights flash and sirens blare,
The piercing sound ringing in his ears.

The tattered shell of what once was a car,
Lies in the middle of a road, and nearby he can see,
A body, speadeagled, in the shadown of the car
"Oh my god!" he gasps, "It is me!"

"Yes," the woman replies, "It is you.
If you choose to drive home tonight
You will die this terrible death,
Do you think to choose this path is right?"
'But I will be with Maria,' he thinks to himself, 'my lovely Maria.'

"But think on this," the woman continues,"If you die,
The effect it will have on those you leave behind.
Your son and your daughter will be all alone,
And the world, to them, will not be kind."

She passes a hand in front of her,
And it seemed as if a home movie played before his eyes,
One showing the horrors his children would face,
At the point of his demise.

In the movie, his kids were passed,
From foster home to foster home, throughout their childhood years,
The later ones spattered with drink and drugs,
And other such devestating things, bringing him to tears.

"So you have seen," the woman said,
The repercussions of one of the choices you face,
If you decide against it, all will be well,
And our children's world will be a better place.

And with that, she pulled back her hood,
And the man exclaimed with a gasp, "Maria! It's you!"
She smiled, and replied "Yes, my love, it is I,
And I have a request and a plea to put to you."

"Please don't get yourself killed this night,
Stop this grieving, for I am happy and free,
Please get yourself home to our kids, my dear,
For they need you far more than me.

And with that she was gone, and he was back,
Stood by the car, keys in hand, and alone.
"Very well, my darling," he whispered to the night.
And he hailed a taxi to take him home.
"I'll take care of them Maria, my love, my one, Maria.

Love it Tika! You struggled with the rhyme and meter a bit (but so do I usually) but the story concept was pretty cool and nicely delivered overall.

Thanks TB! I know the rhyme and rhythm of the poem didn't flow consistantly throughout, but like I said, my muse is really off at the moment. I'm surprised I managed to even achieve what I have done ;). But I think it's good to try and push ones way through the mental blockages. Especially when done in such a 'no pressure' way, as, though this is a competition, it's also just for fun. :)

There was a great tiger from Kentucky,
Who caught a zookeeper, how unlucky.
"I'm not happy in here."
"I'm sorry to hear."
"Look at this place, its so mucky."

My :2c: :D

Tiger

Lost in stripes, found in eyes
Weak yesteday, tomorrow we strive
Today is yellow between two blacks
Filling of the cracks in the mirage of the cat

Some stand right, strong and proud
Some fall down, and still too loud
Among the echoes, the silence is my prey
Even though I wander, still I never stray

Only water can show my true reflection
Nature hides my shape from any close inspection
Walking on two feet, different, you can see
But what you cannot see, you're quite like me...

Lovers

Tiger fights Dragon
in the dead of the night
He pounces, she thrashes
They grapple in tight

They dig in their claws
He jabs with his teeth
She rolls him across
and breathes in deep

Upwards he thrusts
To send her higher
Her wings she trusts
As she screams her fire

She clamps on with talons
Lifts him into the sky
He relies on his talents
To hang on as they fly

She screams in defiance
As he lets loose a roar
Her spine aligns in compliance
As he gouges her more

He flips her around
and chomps on her chest
she falls to the ground
at his violent behest

Wildly he scratches
and digs in his claws
Across his back she matches
Red blood she draws

She furiously screams
Her flame billows out
Her glowing eyes beam
In this final bout

He roars in his rage
His blood goes to boil
released from his cage
The war becomes toil

And in one last gasp
She claws him in tight
He slays her at last
with a final bite

His jaws opens heart
His tongue tastes her blood
They finally part
And lay in the mud

For the rest of the night
Resting under her wing
Recalling the fight
It makes his soul sing.

And she in her heavenly place
deep within
delights in herself as she tastes
the real win.
