The knife was farther in Sam's favor than it was the killer's. Quickly, she lunged forward to grab it and with a movement so smooth that God herself could not have escaped it, the knife took off the killer's hand so cleanly.

"Arrrggh!" she shrieked, stumbling backwards into the alley. Sam was stunned - she knew the cry would draw the attention of local residents and hopefully, they would be able to identify the mess after the killer got shredded.

The shredding commenced as cerival rats squeaked, darting from the shadows to rip and tear at the killer. With a scream, he bit the head off of the rat closest to the sewer grate. Ten more seconds, Sam prayed. The din rose as the rats spawned and chewed at every exposed bit of skin until the breath of life flowed no more.

Sam let out her breath. It had been a long time since she'd had to bear the curse of her people. The last time was when her brother gave up his life in a ritual that would secure their family's safety for generations. Hm...when we decide on a title this, do we want me to make a story thread for this one too? It sounds neat and comprehensible.
