The Storyteller's Dilemma (Complete)

The Brave Knight arrived and fought valiantly to protect the Beautiful Princess.

“The Brave Knight arrived and fought valiantly to protect the Beautiful Princess.”

Prince Harold’s interest grew. He looked amused.

“The Brave Knight’s instincts told him that something was wrong, so he grabbed his sword and shield and rushed to the palace in time to hear the Evil Dragon’s demands. While others trembled in fear, the Brave Knight rushed forward and placed himself between the dragon and the Beautiful Princess. The dragon roared angrily breathed fire, but the knight lifted his shield and was safe. The dragon took in another mighty breath, and the knight lunged with his sword. But the scales of the dragon were as hard as steel.

“The second breath of fire was more powerful than the first, and the knight’s shield glowed red with the heat. Though the red hot shield was now painful to hold, the knight knew if he must not drop it, so he stayed strong and waited for the fire to end.

“The dragon became angrier as the knight continued to resist, and the other guards were becoming braver. The dragon lashed out with his tail, sweeping the guards and the Brave Knight away and leaving the Beautiful Princess unprotected. The dragon laughed as he clutched the princess with his clawed feet. The Brave Knights shield was shattered and he could hardly stand from the last blow, but he stumbled forward, trying with his last shred of strength, to stop the dragon. As the dragon rose into the air, he called out to his beaten foes below,

“‘Bring the gold to the place you call Old Valley. Let there not be a single piece of gold left out or the princess will only be the first to suffer.’

“The knight fell to his knees in shame. He could not save the princess. When the dragon was far out of sight, he stood up again and swore that he would find the dragon’s secret cave, save the princess, and once for all defeat the Evil Dragon.

“As the days passed, the knight searched the mountains near Old Valley for the secret cave. He carried with him a stronger shield and a long spear, which he hoped would serve him better in the next confrontation. Meanwhile the entire kingdom rushed to sacrifice all of its gold to appease the dragon and bring back their beloved princess. They could not be sure the dragon would keep its word, but they would be at his mercy if the Brave Knight did not succeed in his quest.

“Guided by fate or luck, but nearly overpoweringly tired, the knight soon stood very close to the secret cave, but he still could not see it anywhere. Then…”

Prince Harold’s interest grew as he listened to the last part. Bridget paused to considered the direction of the story. Then she began again, telling Prince Harold about how the Brave Knight discovered the secret cave.

The Brave Knight prayed for strength and guidance.
The Evil Dragon lured the Brave Knight into a trap.
The Beautiful Princess began singing.
