| Hocking the jewels seems pretty dangerous. Won't the merchants accept him as a guard since he has a sword? He can make up a story about being robbed or something to explain his rags.

 Not a great guard if he were robbed  The robbers managed to overpower him enough to strip him of his clothing, down to his small clothes, yet didn't take his sword?
I can't think of any plausible reason for him wearing rags, and having a sword, other than him being a thief on the run, having stolen the sword. Probably not something the merchant band would want.
I voted for selling, gearing up and exploring.
