PostPosted: Sun Oct 10, 2010 10:21 pm    Post subject: Two-word-at-a-time Story: Fantasy Reply with quote

Here's something we're doing around the City in a few different genres: telling a story as a group, with each person writing two words at a time. Each reply in the thread should repeat the story from the beginning. So the first post might be "One day", then the second post "One day Johnny was", then the third post "One day Johnny was walking to", etc.

The rules are:
  • Stick to the genre. This one is fantasy; keep it appropriate to a fantasy story.
  • You can't post twice in a row. If you've just posted, you must wait for at least one other person (and hopefully more) to post before you post another two words.
  • Anyone can end the story by posting "The End". Hopefully we'll all have a sense of when the story has come to an end.
Here are some tips we've found for making the story interesting:
  • Reincorporate: Oddly enough, the main technique in helping a story move forward is to look backward. In improv theater, we use the word "reincorporation" to mean bringing back elements that have been introduced earlier in the story. That's what gives the story structure and meaning, and makes it more than just a series of unconnected events. So whenever you're tempted to introduce some new element or character, think instead about how you might re-introduce an existing element or character.
  • Name the characters: It's a lot easier to refer back to a character once you've named him, so that promotes reincorporation and also makes the text flow more smoothly.
  • Use active words: Use words that advance the story and describe action. Avoid words like "decided", "learn to", "pondered", "really", etc., that just draw things out. And especially avoid "very", which doesn't add anything.
  • Be obvious: Just write the next two words that seem to fit the story the best. Don't try to be clever or unexpected or funny. It's a bit of a paradox, but if everyone tries to be obvious the story goes in funny and unexpected directions by itself, whereas if people try to be clever it ends up falling flat.
OK, let's get started. I'll let the first person start with the first two words.

His companion looked round. "Shouldn't we suit up before you go barge into Baron Luxorz's temple?"

"Jayke, quit being so like a stuffy mothball! We're just going to walk through and snap this mystery, and go to Daina's place". Mar'tem finally saw the shimmering curtain of light which separated the two dimensions. "There! See that light? This artifact can split the curtain."

Holding aloft the magic cube, the last heir of the fairy line strode toward the shimmering wall of radiance. He then started walking into lands beyond, catching glimpses of strange creatures like butterfly-human hybrids. Confused, he slows down and stares at the new path before him.

It was a curious sight: the path split into multiple small paths, each one glowing different shades of blue. Baron Tapialee must be on a business venture in other parts, as he clearly wasn't managing the temple ahead.

"Could I see that?" Said Jayke.

"If I wanted you to see the true power of the last heirloom of the king, you must have brainwashed yourself or be an idiot."

Taking a tighter grip on the treasure. With a firm step Mar'tem set forth. A yard ahead he sees familiar shapes, they are huddled around the body of a large animal. Mar'tem hears Baron Luxorz's moans coming quite a few times louder than fairies usually moan. "He sounds happy", snorts Jayke, as Mar'tem blushes, remembering his own little 'adventures' earned him the title "Moaning Mar'tem"

Shaking off the thought he advanced

Shaking off the thought he advanced towards the moan, feeling nervous. He recognised the the pitch. It belonged to Lord Melkor, Baron Luxorz's confidante. Grinning from ear to ear, he waltzes around the room

Mar'tem swore there was a hidden path near the fairy kingdom that no one knew about. The king of the Faeries had long since hidden it from mortal intrusion but Mar'tem had obtained an artifact which could display the settlement.

"I'm close!"

"I'm close!"
