Warning: The following may be fun to read and whisk you away to a world of imagination.

Prologue
Willow looked across the great fields from the top of his house, relaxing, he then turned the other way to move his gaze over the great cliffs in stark contrast to their surroundings forming a sort of "void". His house had been built, it seemed, as close to these cliff faces as possible, but Willow liked this, for him the void was calming to him. It was such an amazing place to live and Willow loved living there, on the other side of the giant crack in the ground that he was now looking at was more field and beyond that mountains rising up in the sky, they were the solemn watchers of the land.

Willow didn’t live with anyone, though he did know people, a couple miles from his house there was a small village that he would sometimes go to for supplies. Though all in all he was almost completely self sufficient.

“Ahhh how good it is to be alive”, he breathed into the air.

These were his last words before all of his home, his possessions, and his life were taken away from him, and he was forced into an adventure that would change his life forever…

Chapter 1
Suddenly Willow heard yelling, almost screaming, coming from one side of his house, accompanied by banging, both noises supposedly coming from where the door was. He ran across the short distance of his roof and jumped down into his house with all the speed and flexibility given to him from years of hunting for his own food when help was not available. Many years later he would wish that he had simply ignored the screaming and went about his business, but sadly, the past can never be changed.

When he got to the door he flung it open to find a man, in his thirty's or forties wrapped in a dirty cloak and with fear in his eyes and in the sweat on his brow.

“Is there anything I can do for you?” said Willow a bit shaken, as if the mans fear was now gushing out and flowing into him.

“You must hurry, I have come to tell you cough cough you are in grave danger, you must protect it, and you must protect it.”

“What must I protect?” exclaimed Willow, very confused at this point.

“The Portal Stone” the man whispered slowly and painstakingly and handed Willow a shimmering stone, flashing from blue to red, then a swirl of green, a stripe of purple, colors moving across its surface always moving in different patterns. It fit in Willows palm perfectly and it was the perfect weight, not to heavy and not to light.
The man startled Willow out of his trance, “They are coming for it” he said in a weak, almost defeated voice “they are coming for you, you must leave here immediately, or you will forever be their slave, as… as I was, you are the new portal wielder, do not end up as I did, do not end up as I did…” With that the man drew his final breath and collapsed on Willows doorstep, leaving Willow alone confused and scared witless.

Willow needed to calm himself, se he started to make himself a cup of tea and he thought of all that had just happened. Would he really have to leave his home, his beautiful home, the home he had lived in his whole life and had tended for so lovingly. He could never leave, he wouldn’t leave, this man was just some crazy old guy with a… Willow glanced down at his hand where he was still holding the stone. It sparkled and shimmered as if it was constructed of pure sunlight. Ok maybe he wasn’t an ordinary man thought Willow, but leaving home was just too much. And what had he meant by ‘they were coming for you’, who was coming, why would someone come for me Willow reasoned even more, even if I have this stone now I had nothing of value before it, and how could they know I have the stone- At that moment his thoughts were cut short by the sound of the door slowly creaking open in the other room.

Suddenly everything the man had told Willow seemed more plausible and Willow slowly made his way over to his cabinet. When there he opened it and slowly and quietly removed the wall behind it and crawled into a small room with a window big enough for him to fit through on one side and just enough room for him to sit in with a bit of leg room.

Willow had discovered this room many years ago, when he was just a boy, and had hid in it many times when playing his childish games of hide and seek against invisible people.

Willow started to move toward the window, which led to the cliff side of the house, but Willow knew well, many paths that he could reach that would lead him to safety. As he inched toward the window though, he suddenly remembered how load it was to open the window and knew it would alert whoever was in his house to his position. After a moment of thinking, Willow decided it was more logical to stay in his current position, for the man (or women) didn’t know it existed and would not find him there, and might eve leave. Well if he opened the window he may be able to escape bu now the person would know exactly where to find him.

So he sat, and sat, thinking to himself how clever he was, and how he could just wait this out and everything would go back to normal, then he glanced slightly over to the wall bordering the cupboard and saw something that made his heart stop dead and his blood run cold. The wall was incredibly slowly, inch by inch, moving forward. This man or women or whatever it could be was so quite and cunning it was going to walk pounce right in to Willows deepest and darkest hiding place without him even knowing.

Willow glanced at the window in panic, and then as an afterthought at the shimmering stone in his hand…

Ok the DP is obvious enough, what should Willow do, go out the window perhaps, use the stone.

OK, I have added in the first poll because the DP was realitivly obvious, so any comments would be good, as well as voting Smile.

This isn't a bad start, but it has a few grammatical errors. Mostly just simple stuff like mistaken punctuation and missing commas.

There was one part where you made the mistake of using the word "load" in place of "loud."

Other than that, though, a good opening. You get straight to the plot and that's admirable.

Seeing as Willow (I keep picturing Warwick Davis, horrible of me, I know.) doesn't sound like much of a fighter and he's skeptical of the stone and whether or not if it has powers, I believe he'd opt for the window escape.

Ok, not a bad start. Maybe you should explain why Willow lives by a cliff, and why he lives alone. Give us a little more background history, since his situation is a bit mysterious and devoid of explanation.

As for the DP, I think Willow should use the window rather than the stone, since he can use his knowledge of the terrain to his advantage. The stone, on the other hand, he knows nothing about.

Chapter 2
Willow stared nervously at the wall as it slowly moved in; he looked out the window once more and then back at the stone. He had no idea how the stone could help him but he knew that the stone could, it was just a feeling, but a feeling that he knew was true.

He didn’t have time for this though; he only had about a minute left before the man, women or whatever it was burst in and ended his life permanently. So Willow did the only thing that he knew indefinitely would work in his time of desperation, he threw open the window releasing a booming groooooaaaan and threw himself out as fast as was physically possible.

He landed on the sloping edge leading down to the sheer cliff side that made up one part of the rift as the villagers nearby called it. They were afraid of it, but Willow knew better, he had actually almost got to the bottom a couple years ago. Though he had run out of light and was forced to go back up, the rift did not scare him, it was just another part of life, always there and never leaving, something solid, something he could trust, nothing like the turn of events he was experiencing today.

Willow looked up as he made to run, sticking out of the window was a face Willow would never forget, cold and unforgiving, the face of a killer, the face of his killer. He ran, and ran, and did not stop running, he was using the paths he had found as a boy, but didn’t really know where he was going, he was just running. Suddenly the world spun out of control and he was falling, rolling and then falling again, then nothing, everything was gone, nothing existed and Willow found himself once again in his childhood…

There was fire, fire all around, it wasn’t supposed to be there, it had never been there before, Willow was confused. “Mother” he called out, knowing that when he called for his mother everything was safe again… but she did not come, this also confused Willow, and he started to cry because the fire was getting hotter as well. “MOTHER” he screamed, wanting the fire to go away, wanting to be in his mothers arms. He was in his room near the back of the house, and suddenly instinct took over. He desperately searched for an exit, some way out of the pain and the terror, he only wanted to get away, there was nothing else in his mind. In front of him was a wall of fire, but behind him it was much better and some of the wall had crumbled providing a way out. Willow focused in and dove through one such hole in the wall and landed on the singed grass on the other side. Before he got up to run, he looked up and found his house had been transformed into a massive demon. Fire raging so large you could hear the roar of it sucking all the oxygen from around it was…alive. Then Willow ran, and ran, and did not stop running …

Willow awoke with a jolt, his first impression was that he was dead, because everything was almost pitch black, but then memory slowly started to trickle back to him. He had been running from something, yes that was it; he had been running from a man… but why? Wait he had had something of value, the man must have wanted it, but what was it that he had had, his eyes suddenly snapped into focus, the stone! Where was it, he was no longer holding it, where was the stone! This was the whole reason all of this was happening, he couldn’t have just lost it. Willow aimlessly crawled along what appeared to be a ledge, though he was not sure how he had gotten there, all he knew at the moment was that he needed to get the stone.

Something slightly glimmered beside him in the soft clay that made up the ledge and he slowly reached to pick it up, it was the stone! He relaxed and held it close to him, he was not sure why he was so attached to it, but he was and that was that. So now that that was taken care of Willow sat down to sort out his thoughts.

About an hour later he had come up with this theory: he had been running is desperation from the killer and had missteped and rolled down the slope and fallen of the cliff a few five or six feet only to land on one of the soft clay ledges that lined the cliff face. He had no idea how long he had been out for, but he was starving, and thirsty to. Willow felt utterly lost, he was being hunted, and the experience was terrifying.

Suddenly a thought occurred to Willow, if he went up, then surly the Killer would find him, but if he went down… He rolled over the idea a bit, yes it was perfect, he would go down, no one would find him in the rift, and there would have to be some sort of life down there, rats to be sure, so he would have food. “But I have no rope” Willow muttered, “hmmmmmm”. ‘I’ll just have to take that chance’ he thought to himself, ‘I will set forth immediately’.

Willow cautiously put the stone in one of his pockets, which he firmly secured so it would not fall out. Then he slowly lowered himself into the darkness, clutching to the soft brownish clay. “This isn’t to hard” Willow uttered aloud reassure himself, then his feet left the clay and struck something hard and slippery. It was as Willow dreaded, the clay was not going to lead all the way down to the bottom as it did from some ledges, now he had struck cold, hard, damp stone. He reassured himself again and slowly lowered himself in the pitch black unknown.

As Willow lowered himself he felt his grip become looser and looser, soon only his hands were gripping the soft clay. He hung there, unable to find a foothold on the slippery rock below him. A strange calm came over him, the calmness that comes over one when he or she is close to death, so close that but one act can escort them away from the land of the living. I t was this calmness that held Willow in its hands now, and he felt he could simply stay where he was for all eternity, but his arms started to burn, thought he didn’t notice much. Soon he was once more thinking back to his childhood…

Willow was to tired to move on, he had been running for what seemed like days, and he could hardly breath, let alone run. He wanted his mother, she would make it ok, she always did. Willow was sure she would come and find him I he just waited, so he went over and sat on a log near where he was standing and waited… He waited for two whole days, he drank from a small stream he found near by reluctantly after a while, but he didn’t eat once, because he knew his mother would do that for him. Soon though he could take it no more, instinct took over again; he needed to move and to get somewhere where there was food. So he walked now, he walked for many hours, and it was now dark. He was about to just collapse on the spot in desperation when he saw lights in the distance, faint but definite. He headed toward the lights at a brisk pace, faster, faster, and faster still until he was racing over slops and around rocks in the dark toward the town. Then he thought something was chasing hi so he ran even faster, and then he tripped over a small stone and slammed into the ground full tilt, the world around spun and twisted slowly out of focus…

Willow snapped out of his memory just in time to watch in horror as his arms gave way and he fell 2 feet only to land precariously on a small ledge. He quickly grabbed hold as best he could with his limp hands and wobbled there on the ledge. He had almost let himself die! The idea was preposterous but true, he had almost let himself die!

Willow was disgusted with himself, and it took him quit a while before he finally regain complete control of his body again. He looked up, this had been a stupid idea, and how had he ever thought he was going to get down the side of a slippery cliff face in the dark without rope. But there was no turning back now, he had gone ahead and started it and now he would have to finish it.

As Willow climbed down a regular heart-stopping pattern started to reveal itself. He would climb downwards painstakingly slowly about one foot, then he would fall about two or three feet and land on a small ledge, and repeat the patter again. Though as he progressed down, the fall to the next ledge became increasingly longer, soon reaching to five or once even six feet. To make it worse the ledges were also getting increasingly smaller as well, every time Willow fell it became more likely it would be his last.

When Willow finally felt that he could no further both do to lack of strength and lack of confidence, he decided he would give it one last go. He slowly made to lower himself from his current ledge, but found a problem, it was slightly bigger then the other ones, so he stepped back further, and yet still there was no end. So he turned around to find himself standing on a ledge the slightly hollowed into the cliff side and a great expanse of what must have once been a beautiful city. It extended to all the way to the other side of the rift, which was large but not humongous, and then in both directions opposite that. Then Willow realized there was light, soft and white, exactly how the light of the moon looked, and it was radiating from within the decrepit city, coming from everywhere…

Ok the DP is this, you must decide what the source of the mysterious lights are, you may also comment on where you might think Willow should go now if you like as well.

I can see the pics. They are working.

Not a bad chapter. We get a little background on the little hermit, at last! Haha.

Well, I think it'd be cool if it was some beast attempting to lure the unwary like the undersea fish that have the glow bulb that hangs from their heads. Perhaps a gigantic wyrm that has a similar adaptation? Hmm.

TruePurple what is your last quot about? You structured it as if you were correcting a mistake, but you corrected "die" meaning to stop living, used in correct context in the SG to "dye" meaning some sort of natural substance used to change color, which would not be the correct context... Was it a joke?

No, I noticed it too.

You use "dye" up there near the darkness picture instead of "die."

Well, I had my monster idea...

But how about a similarly lost traveler of the underground regions? Like a dark elf or a dwarf?

Hmm... It could be some type of glowing mineral deposit, or a crystal. Maybe with some sort of magical properties. Of course, they could just be glowing crystals. Maybe there could be some sort of mine down there to mine the crystals. Just some suggestions.

Chapter 3

After some closer inspection Willow realized that the light was coming from some sort of crystalline substance that seemed to be growing all over and in the city. Making the image of the city serene and perfect in its crumbling state tucked away in eternal darkness, never to be viewed by anyone. Willow almost felt as if he were intruding on some beauty he was not meant to see and felt the need to start to climb back up. Though with a quick glance above him Willow knew that would be more then impossible. It was a wonder he had even survived getting to the bottom… to climb back up was inconceivable.

Willow must have stood there for hours just watching the city… and the gleaming soft white glow of the crystals, so mesmerizing and peaceful. Yet so enthralling as well, they made Willow wish to understand them and get closer to them, this is what finally drove him from his small ledge to head into the unknown.

As Willow entered what must have once been the main gate to this once prosperous hidden city something spectacular happened. All around him, on all sides, the crystals, growing out of houses, the street, almost everywhere imaginable… began to change color. It was hesitant at first, then suddenly in a flash of pure brilliance and energy every color in the rainbow rippled across the crystals within Willows vicinity. Willow looked around him in ecstasy and awe, his world illuminated by this unknown power.

Soon Willow noticed his pocket become warm and when he glanced down he was surprised to see light coming from his pocket as well. He slowly removed the stone from his pocket and almost dropped it as it was made of pure white light with the occasional ripple of color.

Willow held the stone above his head and laughed as all the colors flowed around him as if in a dream. He ran through the city, jumping and watching as the brilliance followed him through all the ancient streets and into many of the great smoothly constructed houses. Though soon Willow picked up on a sort of loneliness settled in the city, as if something had happened here… something sad, but the city's energy had never left, eagerly awaiting its people to return with endless patience. This thought presented itself as rather disconcerting to Willow because it gave him the impression that the city was alive.

Suddenly all the lights around him were slightly terrifying and as he ran he felt more and more like something was chasing him. As he held these thoughts of fear within him while he held the stone, all the lights around seemed to dim the slightest bit. A new sort of energy seemed to be coming from them suddenly, and Willow could have sworn the amount of red almost doubled.

All of this did not help his fears, and as they proliferated themselves within him so did the horrible energy. Finally Willow put the stone in his pocket and ran over to the nearest building. It was slightly larger then the others, and was circular instead of more square like the other buildings in the city. Though Willow had seen many other building also much like this in other districts in the city.

He entered into a large hall, seemingly designed for a meeting of some sort, the suggestion of structure brought some comfort and as he sat down the crystals cracking through the walls around him seemed to calm and reside into momentary flickers of colors.

Willow settled down laying his back against the impossibly smooth gray wall of the building, resolving to sleep for a bit and them explore the city a bit further in search of food and water. As he fell into his slumber, dreams of his past welled up, with the emotion of the crystals still coursing through his veins.

Willow found himself in a nice warm room with a hearth, and the fresh smell of stew which made his stomach growl. As Willow enjoyed the warmth of the fire a kindly and motherly women walked into the room and smiled at him.

“You look absolutely starving dear, I swear after we found you I didn’t think you would ever fatten up!” the women exclaimed happily as she observed the boy. She waited hopefully for him to say something… but he didn’t say a word. He had been plenty talkative when they had found him the one fateful night about a week ago… but after that, hardly a word. Maybe some food would get him to speak thought the women. She hurried to get some stew from the kitchen.

Willow moved a bit in his sleep and thought he heard a slight scrabbling on the floor. Then drifted back into his childhood so long ago.

Now Willow was walking though a village on a slightly overcast day with a man… both had serious expressions on their face, one copying the other. This seemed to amuse some In the small community as one shouted out “Taking after the old man then is he! If I didn’t know better I would say you stumbled upon your own child out there”. This provoked some laughter, which made the man grimace even more… which in turn made Willow adopt the same expression… There was more merry laughter…

Then suddenly their was a flash and Willow was once again in the house he had started out in, this time sitting at a table. “Pass the oatmeal” he was saying across the table to the women… who looked at him disapprovingly for this boy she loved so much refused to call her mother. The large communal bowl of oatmeal was passed all the same without a word, and Willow ate.

“So” the man at the table said “lots to do today my boy, are you ready for a good day of work?”. Willow just nodded… nothing else for him to do. The man looked at him, and then went back to his oatmeal leaving a slightly awkward silence. Then Willow got up and left the table without consent and walked away. He felt anger… but he did not know why… such great anger coursed through his body. Then there was fire all around him and pain all over his body. The world was burning, he was burning…

He suddenly woke up in the strange meeting hall. At first nothing seemed wrong, to distract himself from his nightmare he admired the complexity and ultimate perfection of the circular ceiling and wall carvings. Then the statue in the center of the hall, depicting some sort of robed man with an intricate and seemingly impossible crown. It was when he drew his eyes away from the statue the he let out a gasp of terror and almost shot up 5 feet in the air. There was an old albeit tall imposing old man standing in right front of him! Willow marvel over how he had not noticed this seemingly obvious presence.

The man was wearing a dark purple and green cloak and had a long white scraggly beard that twisted through much of his multi-colored jewelry layered around his person. He also wore a crown, seemingly made out of light it almost floated atop his head, so intricate it seemed to tell more then one story across its surface. Willow was not able to stop staring that the crown until the man spoke, his voice both young and old, powerful and serene, calming and exhilarating.

“It has been released” he said, “into the hands of a new savior”. Willow just stood, waiting for the man to speak again. Finally after a great pause he did “I wish not to disturb your soon to be quest, though as I find you in my city I can only offer hospitality. Come” In that moment Willow felt a tingling and suddenly the world melted into color and was re-painted in a flash so he found himself in a massive chamber with a throne constructed much like the mans crown on one side. Well in front of him sat a table piled with succulent and awe-inspiring foods as well as drinks of the same caliber. Willow, though hungry and parched, would never eat food from this being, whatever it might be. This was he reserve until the being said “eat” and he found himself doing just that. Stuffing delightfully warm meats shining orange and red, and biting into juicy fruits of all types. In little under ten minutes Willow was more then contented and started to think about he current situation and what was happening. He looked over to the figure behind him, seemingly etched into the scenery… was he in the presence of a god? Suddenly the figured moved and stated “some call me such… I am Othor, leader of Tarrisian, nothing more, nothing less.”

Willow was hesitant to speak but could see that that Othor wanted him to. So he said “Is this Tarrisian?” he asked quietly.

“Yes” boomed Othor rising his arms and adopting an expression that might have almost been pride… but could not have been. “This is Tarrisian, City of painters, Land of Color, Nation of the Everlasting! Here the world was created, and refined, here the Portal-wielders kept the powers of evil in check… and here”, his voice adopted a much graver tone, “those Portal-wielders were defeated. Yes my new savior, here is a place of legend and wonder, fallen now, but ready one day to return… you have always lived close, as fate drove you close… and now fate drives you away! With this Othor, Leader of Tarrisian, slammed his hands together and Willow found himself in a vortex of color, forming imagines all around him, great cities, open plains, and places that could only exist in legend. It was time for the world to once again experience a long forgotten power… it was time for Willow to fulfill his destiny.

Ok, the DP this time is sort of important… I want you to decided where Willow goes. Come up with something interesting, maybe a village being troubled somehow, or a large city… Looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

Well Wizard I think that Willow needs to know more about the surrounding land before he really moves much. he needs to know where he was sent.

I think its too soon for Willow to go out on his own. He doesn't have the equipment and he needs to know where to go, what he needs to do and why him. Umm... I think this Other man knows and should enlighten him to what he needs to do next! We should know more about this mysterious character too.

Thanks Sos! Very Happy

I can see a lot of people want answers before Willow is thrown into his adventure... Because Willow is already being transported it will be hard for him to find himself back in the city. SO what I could do is have a "mentor" figure find his way to Willow at the place that he finds himself in. This man (or women I suppose) will know about the mysterious city and its king, and can further explain things. Though mystery is also key in this SG, I want Willow to slowly figure out what is happening to him as he moves along.

Having said that, the DP was to decide where Willow is going... any thoughts?

Liking this SG, Bookwizard! Smile
This is really quite a tough DP. Wherever he is transported, he will need to meet someone who can give him more information, or like you said, a mentor of some kind. Putting myself in Willow shoes, I wouldn't have a clue what to do.
Back to the where, I wonder, does he need there to be another one of these crystals at the other end, meaning does he need to teleport from crystal to crystal? Will there be another of these crystal cities (not as grand as the great Tarrisian of course), or structures?
If this was the case, my idea would be that, Willow is transported to the first crystal structure, which is in the middle of a huge, tangled forest. This is where he will find his mentor. The way I see it, Tarrisian is in a place that is near impossible to get to, so anyone who knows about it would be the same, living in a place rarely visited by others, reclusive. Once Willow has learnt more, then he could use the portal stone to go somewhere else.
It's hard to think of anything else, as there are no details as to what his mission entails, and to what goal, other than restoring Tallisian to it's former glory, he is moving towards.
But the not knowing is intriguing, and makes me want to read more. Wink

umm...ok where could he go? He could travel millions of miles and get information and learn new things from other fantasy beings/tribes/cultures. And he could go from the lonely, feeble man to a great warrior.

well since Willow HAS to go some where and the suggestion of a mentor was thrown out there then i say whisk him away to a large city where he will get tested early either by the local bandits or perhaps a pub fight that way the mentor can be introduced in as well

Very good read so far, really enjoying it.

I noticed that amongst the images were open plains, I think he should go to one of these where he comes across a small farm where there is a farmer who takes him in. He stays and works for him doing different chores that are actually part of his training.
